Both models are looking good so far. It would be nice to see some new NYBT members.

Jackreid:

It is a bit difficult to gage the proportions from such a perspective shot may be you could show some orthogonal one? say front.

General advise would be start with large volumes and them subdivide them, check the resulting size of some key element, like window (particularly when you know it's proper size)

Generally it looks pretty god at this point, the only thing that kind of off is the distance from the corner to the first column of narrow windows and then distance between that column and the following column of "wide" windows. I believe the former should be twice as wide as later...

Parisian:

all links to images are dead!

Could you also instead of posting links post actual pictures, just pictures without all that rubbish imageshack normally bundles with them?

Thanks both Jackreid and Hanson. Yes, if you want us to work together, I will be honored. My computer looks very slow nowadays, and I ve tried to upload it, in vain.

Thanks too to you BoxCarRacer, that the reason why I ask someone to make the nightlighting, because such a landmark building must be completed as real as possible.

So how do we do? Hanson, I send you the file next week? Give me your adress in PM.

Jackreid too, you seem to be the King Texture 2.gif

So I've done some alterations based on the advice of SimHoTToDDy and SimFox, concerning the windows. Also, I noticed that the doors were too close together (they aren't shown in the reference I've posted but easily seen from Bing bird's-eye).

screenshot20100415at113.png

Also, as requested, the front orthographic.

screenshot20100415at114.png

One problem I've had is that I can't find any reference wherein the ground floor is visible because of tree cover, would you suggest I make one up? If so what kind of building should I draw from?

Where exactly are these? You can probably find it in google street view and get a good look at it, however if you can't find a that exact one, there are hundreds of other projects in NYC that should have a similar base.

This might be it but I'm not 100% certain.

The co-ordinates are 40.692852, -73.978790, and it's the building on the western side. Since, I've made some more progress with details on the roof as well as a ficticious base in case I can't find a look at the actual ground floor.

screenshot20100415at183.png

I'm not actually certain as to what detail I can put in with things like the roof, which is pretty empty apart from the roof access and the AC unit. In my reference shots, there's a feature of some of the windows which is hard to distiguish in that it could be open windows or AC units on the outside of the building.screenshot20100415at183r.png

There's the made up frontage so far.

Well, the ground floor/entrance not quite that interesting. Have a look.

As for the roof, just do your best to represent the few things that are up there. No one says it has to be chock full of roof junk. 3.gif

Thanks SimHoTToDy 4.gif

Well I've made those changes to the model and checked it over. My next question is now what?

and the same in HD

ny1hdbggl.jpg

These two buildings located in diffrent streets in the district "Alphabet City" (i think its near chinatown)

I hope it is okay 4.gif

yes and No

Yes because it is a fabulous little gems of a buildings. No because they don't look their best! You need to simply open "Gamma and LUT" tab in preferences of you MAX and close it be clicking on OK, nothing more. Then gamma correction will happen and it will look right.

Again, it is superb modeling!

Feindbild: Happy first post on ST! Also great to see a "new" BATer (although something tells me you have been modeling for a while).

I'm with simfox, beautiful little models! Just the kind of thing I love to see (and would probably make if I ever got around to it). "Turn on" the gamma correction the way Simfox mentioned and those deep, scary, black shadows won't look nearly as menacing. Might also help with the saturation of your materials too.

Really looking forward to more work from you!

jackreid: Proportions seem correct, the next step is to see how it looks in gmax and make any further adjustments there. If you play your cards right, textures should make up for the lack of activity on the roof, however you can always add a few of those "things" that appear to be present on the roof (damned if I know what they are 3.gif )

AQnd... will you grace us with properly renderd preview?4.gif

oe is it self service sort of thing here??

I did tinker a bit with your images and here how they would look when exported properly:

5fef6b82bb5b.jpg

it is a bit washed out with correct gamma 2.2. I think you need to rework your materials and bitmapped textures a bit to get it somewhere like this:

Is it just me, or is there something wrong with the perspective?

Well, the top half isn't modeled yet, its only an image on a plane (more or less), so it looks rather odd.

That being said, its a nice choice  think.

As for your first buildings, they look much better, however I think your problem stems from the saturation of your materials/bitmaps. Tone them down a (whole) lot and then go from there. I'm going to guess that the brick one is one of those super-vibrant-red type buildings, in which case, just desaturate a little.

I'm already a fan of your work 2.gif

Hi,  thank you 4.gif

I desaturate the material of the red one a little bit, i think its ok:

bierbr4c.png

I add a little after-roofparty-scene 9.gif

And the second building:

Not really a fan of the "roof party scene", but the model look amazing!

I believe that the building on the left might need some further de-saturation, and glass might need to be recessed a little more inside the facade.

You're doing a great job 1.gif!

It looks lovely, and I actually like the party scene, i think it adds a touch of life. However, the chairs look humungous! especially the downed ones.

Having said that, I also think your textures have too much contrast and saturation. Try editing that in photoshop.

Yes, I agree. They do look too large.

Anyway, here's a request I have: Century 21 Department Store, across the street from the WTC site. It's an impressive building, and much larger than a typical mall department store. In reality, though, it's kind of like a super-sized upscale TJMaxx.

~ COMING SOON! Exciting new projects! ~

There hasn't been much BATing going on in NYBT, but ya'all should know we're still here.
Nice weather and RL obligations are to blame. 9.gif
NYBT members who have confirmed their membership are>

Aaron Graham
Darknono
Gwail
Hanson784
Seraf
Jumpthefence
PBGV103
lucky7
Parisian (as of April. 25th)
jackreid (as of April. 26th)
and me, Vlasky

Others haven't, so we're guessing they have RL obligations at the time. Anyhow, NYBT has always been open for new members, and if anyone wants to be a part of it, just PM me, or any other member, so we can add you to the list.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for me, after this study break, I'm worming up to finish building I started. As a worm-up exercise I'm doing this little diner, but somehow it doesn't look right. Any suggestions?
And as always when it comes to texturing it, adding material, I stop.
