I'd like to see all the old disasters from SC2K. Riots, fire storms, floods, more realistic earthquakes. I like the idea of seasonal disasters as well; such as floods in the spring, droughts and flash floods in summer, hurricales in fall, and blizzards in winter. Of course that would require the seasons to be modeled first.

I want to see disasters which are realistic and also interesting in the viewpoint in that they put the city to test, the transportation networks as people change routes, reparations etc. Floods would be an excellent one. Maybe we could build flood gates in rivers to prevent it in an area 4.gif.

Floods & Hurricanes... wow.

Heres my disaster expectations.

Unreal Disasters: Monster Attack, Alien Attack, UFO Laser Attack, Robot Attack, Autosaurus, Doomsday. All of those just kill a few buildings, except Doomsday which kills your city.

Natural Disasters: Flood, Hurricane, Tornado, Wildfire, Earthquake/Tsunami, Thunderstorm, Blizzard, Drought, Avalanche. You can make definitions for those 3.gif

Man Made Disasters: Curfews (Negates curfew acts and people don't pay taxes), Meltdowns,Plane and Train Crashs, etc.

Cities XL will be awesome!

Disasters i feel really should be in the game:

1. Nuclear meltdown

2. Riot (not lame sc3000 riot but sc2000 take over the whole map and then some type of riot, i would like to declare martial law from time to time and bring in troops like in sc2000)

3. Gas explosion/Terrorist attack (some kind of explosion)

4. Flood

5. Fire

6. Hurricane

7. Monster

Anythinng else on top of that is a bonus for me.

I don't see why we can't have terrorist attacks. If your sims aren't happy... Stuff like that happens in real life and I'd like them included 9.gif Just make it optional.

Soviet779: I think your 7th disaster will be in Cities XL, Giant Monsters like Godzilla, King Kong, Rodan, and Mechagodzilla. Sovet779: I accept your suggestion of the 7th disaster to be in Cities XL.

I think the usual should be there: fire, earthquake, tornado, etc. However there should be a slider for the intensity of the disaster.

For example, if you wanted a spontaneous explosion, you could set it from firecracker (a building or two blow up) to Tunguska/H-Bomb (your whole city and parts of surrounding regions completely leveled, you get to start over again like the "obliterate city" button in SC4) and set whether it causes radiation contamination. I expect it to have an awesome and accurate explosion effect. A tornado could be adjusted anywhere from EF 0 (ripping up a few shingles) to EF 6 (unimaginable kilometer wide supertornado flattening suburbs and twisting skyscrapers like rotini.) An industrial accident could be adjusted from chemical fire to union carbide.

For added realism:

I think that nuclear meltdowns should count as industrial accidents and NOT explosions. That is silly. There is no way a reactor could cause a nuclear explosion under any circumstances. A nuclear bomb has to have perfect conditions to explode efficiently. Sure, Chernobyl exploded, but that was due to pressurized water and the real damage came from the fact that enormous amounts of radioactive materials were spewed into the atmosphere. Also, meltdowns should become less likely as long as the station is well funded and not too old. As the plant gets older or loses funding, the probability of a catastrophic accident is higher.

Floods should only happen in low areas with poor drainage. Volcanoes should erupt from mountains which are specified as volcanic in terraforming.

Disasters should be able to spawn other disasters. For example, hurricanes and other storms can spawn small tornadoes, earthquakes can cause firestorms, large explosions will cause firestorms.

Meteorites might sometimes explode in mid air.

Landfills should be burnt off in a severe enough disaster. In Sim City 4 I was frustrated with the fact that even though I tried burning them, throwing meteorites at them, forming volcanoes over them and they still remained. True, it's hard to get rid of garbage, but it shouldn't be able to survive a nuke.

Finally, what I would like to see most is an option to assess the damage after a disaster. I don't like guessing which vital parts of infrastructure where destroyed after a disaster. A menu should pop up telling you every building that was destroyed and the total cost of the disaster. Then you can choose which buildings to rebuild, to rebuild all civic buildings, or to rebuild all buildings of any type. If you have too big a disaster to handle the damage you can get regional funding (I will talk about that idea in another thread later.)

I like your ideas Siguy, however I would like to point out two flaws.  The first is that the Enhanced Fujita Scale only goes up to EF5.  The second is that hurricanes do not cause earthquakes.

Oops, sorry. The original Fujita scale, not the enhanced scale goes up to F12, but of course, such a tornado would be totally impossible. I just used EF6 since both of the scales are usually only used up to F5 or EF5, so that it would be described as an unthinkable disaster.

Also, I didn't say that hurricanes could cause earthquakes. I said that they could cause tornadoes, and earthquakes could cause firestorms.

An F6 tornado is not unheard of.  In fact, in march of 1999 an F5 tornado came very close to being just that.

And heres another (seasonal) disaster we get here in the midwest:  Ice Sorms.  Natural disasters should affect entire regions.

A real proper war. The neighbouring country attacks your city and than you can watch how your city is being damaged by the two fighting army's! 9.gif

More surreal disasters, I say, like the CERN black hole, MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!!! If you don't know, search on Google.

No. Just no. First of all, even if that could happen, it would destroy the entire world, and not just a city. Also, the chances of that happening are so slim it's not even worth making a video game disaster about it. The only reason anyone acknowledges that it could happen, is that they're quantum physicists, and nothings impossible on that scale. But think about how long the earth has been around bombarded by cosmic rays thousands of times more powerful than any particle accelerator. CERN black hole, strange matter blob, etc., just not gonna happen.

i say bring back the auto disaster option! in SC3000unlimited the auto disaster always keep me looking out for my city but now it gets kinda boring causing controlled disasters no matter how bad its. also i say in a city with a nuclear power plant or a toxic waste plant there should be toxic cloulds if these buildings are under-funded and also i would like to see a power surge disaster. and to the ppl who wanted train derailments it already happens if your rail is underfunded

I agree with panapl. Bring back random disasters, or at least a 'random disaster' button. It just doesn't feel the same when you can choose when, where, and what disaster will strike your city at any given moment.

I'd like to see more fire-related damage to a city. Fires literally snuff themselves out in SC4 - you could sit back for a minute or two before you actually had to send even a single firefighter. I'd like to see fire being something more dangerous. You could have things igniting or exploding from fire, or toxic chemicals being thrown over your city. Now that's a disaster.

With people wanting Hurricanes in CU, wouldn't Hurricane Katrina victims get mad and start sueing the developers?

It would be a cool disaster, along with the whole poll 4.gif

Hmm, floods and hurricanes, (im probaly very wrong, but arent floods the most common storm in most of the world?) But i think whats more important is the damage afterwoods! In the previous editions, didnt buildings just turn into rubble, i think instead of this houses should have pieces missing and smashed windows and that kind of thing. AND! Power lines, street-lamps, traffic lights, cars, trees all smashed up in the street. That would look very evil >=]

Here are a few suggestions:

-Region-wide disaster must be in the game.

-Ability to create an ice age, as it is the norm of Earth's history.

-Real warfare, driving a tank is not enough.

-Instead of that the citizens are leaving the city, they should make riots and protests against you, a bit like in SCS.

-Starvations, epidemics, lack of water

-Advanced weather system, TM were on the right track with carbondioxide.

I'd say that sertain desasters should occur due to the positon of the city is at on the globe and in its seasons. for example if u live in the tropics you'll likely get hurricanes or just rain during the summer in ur city or near the poles u might get a blizzard in the winter and probably snow melting in the summer. They could also occur randomly like in real life not just by u deciding when.

Here are a few disasters I think would be great for Cities XL...

1. Air Quality Alerts. Though not much of a disaster compared to a 7.8 earthquake, smog warnings can decrease desirability and possibly kill a couple people. It would be especially fitting for cities with heavily polluting industries, or severly congested roads.

2. Windstorms. These can be precursors to more destructive events such as a tornado, plus it would be kind of fun to see patio furniture and maybe a Mini Cooper flying through the air.

3. Building/Bridge Collapse. A building or bridge collapse would not neccessarily be linked to an act of terror. For example, a structure that has been neglected for a period of time (5/10/20 years) could suddenly give way and come crashing down inflicting damage to nearby buildings, and possibly another collapse. Or maybe an underfunding road system could cause an overpass to fall or a bridge to come crashing into a major waterway.

Volcanos... Not the piddly size they were in SC4, but like random, from St helens size to say Yellowstone Park size [the possible climate changing size]... resulting lava flows and pyroclastic flows, ash clouds. Floods, definately. Say your city is similar to Ne orleans. You would then have to deal with random floods and hurricanes.... Wind driven brushfires that turn into wildfires. disasters related to funding issues.. Like a bridge collapse because the bridge was neglected, or gradual pothole increases in one part of a city vs another part of the city.

The simplist, yet most destructive disaster ever! All the cities traffic lights turning green! The world would come to a stop! >9.gif

(And some vandals turning the roundabout signs around, so there not safe either!)

I think it would be great to have an aesthetically pleasing city, wide variety of transportation options, plausible financial model.... and NO DISASTERS WHATSOEVER in the out-of-the-box release.

i think there should be regular disasters like fires, car accidents, small riots if u are a terrible mayor, possibly oil spills like some one said above. =) but it should be realistic. say an industrial road is crowded with commuters and an oil truck pulls out onto the road at the wrong time. an suv smashes into it and the tanker explodes. this would cause very near buildings to catch fire, or even explode if the building is ultra-flammable. also, if i see a building on fire, i don't want to see a generic fireball and the building's texture downgrade, i wanna see blackened parts with gutted walls, ect. also, if you will be able to build dams in the game, they should be able to burst if its funding is lowered too far. other natural disasters like floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, ect ect, should be included and cause realistic damage to the city. fake disasters like alien attacks, giant monsters, ect should be in there for the silly factor, but not an actual disaster. you should be able to toggle natural disasters and 'silly' disasters, but man made ones that happen from dire disrepair and bad infastructure shouldn't be togglable.

It appers, according to the poll, flooding is winning, but when we say flooding, do we mean lots of rain and then flooding, or like tsunamis and storm surges?
