TmiguelT: Why, thank you so much! I'm glad you were able to see things from my perspective about the dependencies; trust me, you won't regret all those downloads! Come back soon!

Raysfan16: Thanks! I suppose I should really have made a mosaic showing all of the South Point Observation Tower (the monument you're referring to). Nevertheless, if you want to see it now, just go back to page 9 and read Update 12, the update in which the tower was built.

GreekMan: Thank you, my friend! While I normally shy away from disasters in CJs, one might be coming up...

SC4BOY: Thanks for your input! Although the observation tower might have looked better in the middle of a park (much like the real CN Tower), I think that having it at the tip of Hunters Island serves to focus more attention on it. All the same, I appreciate your feedback!

julian0625: First of all, welcome to Simtropolis and Nyhaven, and I'm so pleased you chose to make your first post in my humble CJ. Thank you so much for the kind words, and I hope you enjoy your time in ST! Take care!

TekindusT: Thanks! I'm sure that Nyhaven's office workers and downtown denizens are quite happy to have more room to go for a run in their area.

Well, it's been a busy couple of days for Lower Columbia. One of my League of Nations allies, Oak Hill, suffered the loss of its president at the hands of a terrorist organization backed by a jealous neighbor country, and then had to fend off a missie attack from that country, known as Isragon. Needless to say, Lower Columbia won't stand to have such reprehensible actions go unpunished. We're now sending part of our military to the area to help Oak Hill bring its enemy to justice, and our other allies of Atrubia, Jiesan, Isporos and Connar have also sent troops. If all this sounds like fun to you, it's not too late to get in on the fun by applying to join the League of Nations. All you have to do is post an application on our forums, and you'll likely become part of the SC4 community's only completely democratic and hierarchy-free CJ union. Give it a shot!

Now then, on to today's special...

    special11.jpg

Lower Columbia's royal capital, Kendall, recently built a new convention center. It has a built-in hotel and easy access by rail and road to the rest of the city, and it's only a few blocks from the House of Parliament. This convention center is one of the candidates for hosting the League's first-ever summit.

    See you all on Thursday!

Dan (dfnva): Thank you very much! Detail really is important when making a CJ, so I'm glad you approve of the job I'm doing on it.

shanghai kid: It really is a nice building, isn't it? I'm sure there's a vacant room just waiting for your arrival. Thanks for stopping by!

GreekMan: Thank you! I looked hard to find a good convention center on the STEX, but there aren't that many available. This one, however, looks great.

    bluemoose: Thanks!

    upd29banner.jpg

As the first phase of the rail spur extension edged closer to its opening day, I rushed to finalize all the details for its second phase - building the Downtown Rail Loop:

    upd29img1.jpg

By September 2398, my department had finally chosen the Locally Preferred Alternative for the loop. Its course would be somewhat irregular due to the locations of other tunnels nearby, but I felt that it would do a good job of fulfilling its purpose - letting suburban commuters take one train from their neighborhood to their job.

    upd29img2.jpg

Most of the stations for the loop and its connection to the spur already existed when I designed the plans; it was just a matter of adding new platforms to those stations. The Saint Mark's Square subway station was one such station. It was originally just a stop along Saint Mark's Line, with no connections to any other rail lines; the arrival of the loop would change that.

    upd29img3.jpg

The only new station planned was one near Market and 15th Streets, but you could argue that those new platforms were merely an extension of the existing Nyhaven MetroRail station. However, since the new platforms would be some distance from the old ones, I thought of them as a separate station.

    upd29img4.jpg

By the summer of 2399, it was go time for this project. We held a groundbreaking ceremony at Nyhaven Central Station, although there would be little work happening near it. It just made sense to hold the ceremony there since that station would be the starting and endling point for the new rail services that would eventually travel along the new tracks.

    upd29img5.jpg

The first order of business was to start work on the boxes for the new station platforms. Station boxes take at least four years to build, so we had to get started on them right away. It wasn't long before the street near Saint Mark's Square was torn up to begin the process.

    upd29img6.jpg

The same thing was happening over at Market and 15th. Once the pit where the station box there would be built was deep enough, construction crews started installing the temporary decking so traffic could make use of the full width of Market Street again soon.

    upd29img7.jpg

Meanwhile, workers were digging pits big enough to lower the tunnel-boring machines into so the biggest part of the work could begin. By March of 2400, it was finally time to lower them into place.

    upd29img8.jpg

Once the TBMs were in place, things picked up speed a bit. In a few months, the tunnelers were already almost ready to cross Elochoman Slough into downtown.

    upd29img9.jpg

Tunnelers on the other side of Central Station were also hard at work. At about the same time, they were about to punch through the walls of the new station box under the existing Johanssen Park subway station.

    upd29img10.jpg

By mid-2402, the loop part of the project was complete. The tunnelers finished cutting across the southern part of downtown and punched into the spur extension tunnels around July.

    upd29img11.jpg

Speaking of the spur extension, those TBMs to the west of Central Station kept going south while their companions were busy tunneling across downtown. By the start of 2403, they were most of the way to the Kings Line's 25th Street station, where they would cut into another new station box.

    upd29img12.jpg

In December of that year, after a couple of months of testing, the new tunnels opened to the public. The day after the grand opening, I was pleased to read the Nyhaven Sentinel's report on how opening day went. It was a very satisfying day.

I took your advice and i found out that i was just missing one dependency... I thought it was going to be a nightmare but it wasn't 9.gif ... Your parks look awesome 9.gif and i'm making some space to place them on my cities 4.gif

    now with my reply...

The Story is fantastic but i thought you were going to use elevated heavy rail pieces. Now i see that you went with the subway system 9.gif ... Awesome work as usual and spectacular story 9.gif.. Always coming back for more updates because i'm a Nyhaven Resident for life or as long as you keep updating your CJ 3.gif

Great use of the construction lots! I especially like the avenue that shrinks into a road in the sixth picture. That intersection in front of the Nyhaven Central Station looks really good, too. 4.gif

TekindusT: Yeah, they might. At least there's a little sliver of sidewalk for them to use. Anyway, thanks for your kind words! I make most of my maps in Photoshop, but for a few (most notably the Nyhaven MetroRail maps), I use an older program called Macromedia FreeHand.

swat-medic: Well, welcome to Nyhaven, and thanks for reading! I appreciate your compliments.

    bluemoose: Thank you!

TmiguelT: Glad to hear that your dependency issues have been resolved. As for how I was going to implement the new rail extension, tunneling was really my only good option. It also made the most sense, since the first spur extension from Update 27 ended in a tunnel. I originally planned to make most of the rail loop out of the NAM's rail-under-road puzzle pieces, but I don't think anyone has released any stations for them yet (though the RTMT team may have some planned for their next release). Anyway, I greatly appreciate your kind words, and it's great to hear that you're a lifelong Nyhavener. Take care, my friend!

shaylan221: Why, thank you! They say practice makes perfect, and that's definitely true when it comes to CJing. Just watch what your favorite CJers do with their cities and imitate them, and you'll eventually be as good as they are!

ky72x: Thanks! I owe the ideas for those construction lots to my following the various construction projects related to my hometown rail network, the LA County Metro Rail. Attending a recent community update meeting about the proposed extension of the subway through my area was especially informative.

Well, today marks the end of my time in the OSITM section over at SC4 Devotion, but it was a great month! I'm glad to have been awarded this honor, and I hope you all have enjoyed it as much as I have. There will still be frequent updates until late September, when I go back to school.

Now then, on with today's specials!

    special12.jpg

Work continues on the new city of Astoria. The first part of it to be built, though, was this airport. When building it, I was inspired by features of both Phoenix's and Denver's airports. The idea for having the main terminal entrances in the middle of the main roadway came from Phoenix, while the satellite concourses were inspired by Denver.

    special13.jpg

Of course, it wouldn't be a complete airport without general aviation and cargo facilities. The cargo terminal, in fact, is what I built first; it grew out of a porject I was working on for one of my League of Nagtions allies.

    special14.jpg

Here's a closer view of the cargo area.

    See you again on Thursday!

As a Nyhavener i gotta say that this airport looks Great and it has a lot of potential for more development 9.gif ....

I gotta suggest one thing though.... You might wanna fence up that cargo area and put more oil tanks around it 9.gif

Hey man, nice update again. I like your style of building airports-mine is just staring at the screen and saying WTF.

Too bad you didn't have the patience to wait until RMIP-3 came out. Or you're just making it into material for a future update...you are sneaky..

How big is Astoria, out of curiosity?

TekindusT: That's a good point, I could expand this airport if I needed to. Thanks for your compliments on my lotting!

TmiguelT: I'm glad you approve! Thanks for your kind words and advice; this airport could definitely use some fencing.

crazychickensc12: Thank you very much! The terminals are made of pieces from the ACB-VLT Terminals and Jets Series 1 pack, whose two parts are on the STEX here and here. Enjoy!

thepokemaniac: I'm glad you've enjoyed reading Nyhaven, and thanks for commenting! I hope today's update is just as interesting.

GreekMan: Thank you! I'm glad you like it.

bluemoose: Thanks! I can't tell you how long it took me to make the three lots that make up the cargo area, but it certainly took a while.

Raysfan16: Thank you! I didn't forget about RMIP-3 when I built this airport - there's an extra tile between the runways and the more central taxiways next to them, so I can upgrade the runways when it comes out. At the moment, Astoria is only a small city of 12,000, but that's just because I've been too busy preparing updates to Nyhaven to expand it. Come back soon, my friend!

    upd30banner.jpg

Today, we're taking a little break from the usual storyline to examine the quads that make up metropolitan Nyhaven in detail. I was inspired to do an update on statistics after reading calibanX's own such update to his CJ "Monument Valley," over at SC4D. So, Geoff, if you're reading, this one's for you!

    upd30img1a.jpg

    upd30img1b.jpg

Here's a new region view of metropolitan Nyhaven, with the quad borders shown and the indiviual quads named. These 22 quads are where all of Nyhaven's 2.2 million residents live, work and play. Keep the sizes of these quads in mind as we go through the following sets of statistics; I'll keep showing the quad names in each following image.

    upd30img2a.jpg

    upd30img2b.jpg

First is a look at the basic demographics of Nyhaven's cities: their populations (in thousands), their Equcation Quotients, and their life expectancies. As you can see, the central quads are the most populous, and their residents are the smartest and healthiest in the area. Meanwhile, most of the outlying suburbs' residents have lower EQs and LEs. This disparity can be explained by the fact that the inner city is much older (in game years) than the outskirts; in most cases, the outer suburbs have only been around for a year or two. As these suburbs get older, their reisdents should get smarter and healthier, just like their inner-city neighbors.

    upd30img3a.jpg

    upd30img3b.jpg

Here's a look at crime rates in the region. There are more crimes committed in the inner city quads than in the suburbs, due to their having more residents, many of whom earn less than the suburbanites (as the next image will show). However, Nyhaven has invested heavily in law enforcement, much like Lower Columbia as a whole, and most of these criminals are eventually caught. In fact, for the entire metropolitan area, 176 crimes out of the 254 committed last month result in arrests. To be sure, there are certain neighborhoods that are less safe than others; the suburbs of Fairfax and Overland Park are not places where you'd want to hang around much at night. On the other hand, and perhaps surprisingly, the inner city may actually be safer.

    upd30img4a.jpg

    upd30img4b.jpg

As I mentioned above, residents' income goes a long way in explaining crime rates. This image shows why. As is common in large cities, most of the urban core's residents earn less than their suburban counterparts, in some cases as much as four times less. Since these poorer urbanites outnumber suburbanites in Nyhaven, the metro area's average income is somewhat low.

A surprising anomaly can be found in looking at the income for people living near Port Nyhaven. Although you might expect dock workers to earn less than most others, a great deal of gentrification has occurred in this part of town. This quad is also home to the reclaimed land added to Hunters Island in Update 26, where a number of wealthy residents have moved to.

This image also examines the quads' own budget situations. The central Nyhaven quad enjoys an unparalleled budget surplus of $84,000, thanks to the corporations renting office space downtown. The city as a whole is heavily in the black, thanks in no small part to the aftermath of the Simlympics. Even two decades later, it seems that international visitors are still flocking to Nyhaven.

    upd30img5a.jpg

    upd30img5b.jpg

Pollution levels in the city are generally low, as this image shows. The first number under each quad name is the level of air pollution in that quad, while the second number is the amount of water pollution there. As Lower Columbia transitions away from internal-combustion-driven cars, the air quality in Nyhaven has been getting better and better. Most of the pollution in the city now comes from heavy industry and not traffic. The water quality in most of the city is also fairly good. The only exceptions are in the two quads with airports; the airport fuel depots contribute a lot of pollution to the local water.

    upd30img6a.jpg

    upd30img6b.jpg

Finally, here's a look at local commute times in minutes. As you can see, the highest travel times are mostly in the inner city, where traffic congestion is heaviest. The suburbs generally enjoy very short commutes. The only exceptions to this trend are the suburbs of Overland Park and Whitehall Shores, whose commute times actually exceed those of the more urban quads. It may be that these longer commute times are more accurate, as I recently switched traffic simulators to Simulator Z Medium, and I haven't had a chance to play many quads with it installed yet. As I replay the other quads, their reported commute times will probably increase. Oh well, I guess that's something to look at in a future update...

As a final note, I'd like to mention that this thread recently surpassed 500 comments and 13,000 views! Thank you all so much for taking the time to follow Nyhaven. If this update wasn't as exciting as previous ones, don't worry. The storyline will be back next week! Until then...

That sure is up to date information right there. I love those charts 9.gif.. Now my friend lives in whitehall shores and he says that he has to travel to nyhaven every single morning just to get to work. How are you gonna fix this issue? I'm sure you can tell the major to start some work on the outskirts of town 4.gif.

I'll be looking forward to more of your awesome work 4.gif
