Look what I found:

Shanghai 1986 on Flickr

Shanghai, 1986.

Actually, it could just as well be Shanghai, 1936.  I know it is imperialist colonialist Western architecture foisted on a hapless China in the throws of upheaval, but it is still all makes for a beautiful architectural museum set showcasing a fascinating time.  In its heyday, the was East Asia's most glamorous place-to-be, until war and revolution sent everyone packing for Hong Kong.  The irony of the Maoist PRC is that its economic polices enshackling Shanghai's growth oddly may have helped preserve much of this cityscape.  The throwback nostalgist in me notes that this vista no longer exists, as a now reopened and re-emergent China and the resultant hyper urban development have created a mushrooming landscape of outlandishly glitzy supertowers whose girths now hide many of the historic towers.  Imagine, this photo was only 24 years ago...truly another world.

I am a local Hongkie, and while our mega residential lots aren't environmentally friendly, it seems their construction are

justified due to various reasons, so I do not mind seeing them on the STEX. It has become a local characteristic, and at this point they still don't necessarily over dominate and ruin our skyline, although it is getting dangerously close.

I hope more Japanese buildings will be batted, they are so under-represented on the Stex. In my opinion, Japan has a way of blending modern archectiture into its local facade with mind of sustainable development, and they should be rewarded by highlighting their achievements on the STEX.

I truly think batters should limit their choices and think carefully before they bat their next dream project. Most of many modern buildings in China, although arguably architectural wonders, are draining the city in many ways. Several of Kiju's latest bats, including Shanghai Tower and Guangzhou Chow Tai Fook Center, immediately comes to my mind. The Chinese people always have the bigger and better syndrome that is bothering on exploitative, and I am sure we should not embrace that on the STEX.

Since there are so many wonderful buildings across Asia or the world for batters to choose from, I think there is room for political/economic/environmental statements to be made on the STEX. But of course, I can understand STEX should be free of these ideological baggage.

However, I am definitely supportive of smaller scale mainland buildings to be gracing the STEX, and this already represents endless opportunities.

I hope I am making sense.

kendiecasttsoi you make an excellent point. i often flip through the city diagrams at www.skyscraperpage.com and I am truly shocked at some of the projects various chinese cities are taking on. for example:

http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?cityID=918

http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?cityID=954

http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?cityID=934

http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?cityID=1415

After these projects are completed, the skylines will be so horribly unbalanced...you have one 500 m tower, 2 to 4 350 m towers, and then nothing over 150 m tall. the same thing is happening with abu dhabi, qatar, bahrain and kuwait city...they saw what dubai was doing and attempted to copy it...the only problem is that their skylines are so anemic that a singular 1000 ft tower just looks so out of place.

the STEX has actually kept building size under control quite well, IMO. we do have a few giants, like the glitzy new ICC (excellent work paulvmontfort!) and the larger of bixel's mega-estates like the sorrento and caribbean coast; but most of the other buildings are perfectly acceptable and blend well in a city tile of over 200,000 sims. assuming most simcity4 players aren't trying to build cities in the style of modern china (tons of mid-rises and a few awkwardly large towers), the STEX for the most part matches demand and keeps building size reasonable. although i will admit i get a rush of glee and pride everytime on of bixel's behemoths pops up in my cities =P

For those of us impatient for Google Maps to move beyond Hong Kong with their Streetviews for mainland Chinese cities, there has been another resource, of which I only now stumbled across...

http://www.city8.com/

City8.com is a Chinese-language map viewer similar to Google Maps, and while the text is in hanzi characters, the controls will be familiar to non-Chinese readers.

At last, I can peek into the sidestreets of cities on the other side of the world from Texas...

Bank of China Waitan Shanghai back

Ack, and now I have to rework this end yet again for the fourth time!

Although it is already somewhat dated, I do like sea of towers suggested by this YouTube panorama of Shanghai taken from an apartment rooftop somewhere in Hongkou:

Dubai fans, lament, for Dubai will never reach the astounding scope and scale that is the dragon's head of the Yangtze.

Of course, wild Shanghai was already a built-up wonderland in the 1930s when the "Paris of the East" was derided as the "Whore of Asia":

I'm a sucker for the nostalgic old photos of the late colonial era...check out Hong Kong's 1935 Bank of East Asia:

We just don't build them like that anymore...too bad this one didn't last past the 1980s!

However, I am swiftly becoming an Osaka fan...here is a game below using a panorama from the former Cosmotower, much like Where's Waldo:

Find Osaka Castle!

It is there, somewhere...sharp eyes might spot it.

Hey, I'm looking for some lots that would allow me to do something in this style:

sao-paulo.jpg

Although not even being at the same continent, the "fever" (Or, as one could say, "excess") of condominiums and mid-rise buildings reaches both São Paulo (Brazil) and Asia. 9.gif

Because bumping up a topic without having something relevant to contribute is pointless, causes false expectations that there may be something new, attracts further pointless posts, pushes down active and more relevant topics and is hence frowned upon on pretty much any Internet community in the whole wide world for various good reasons. Posting that a topic is dead under a dead topic is probably the most pointless bump I've seen throughout my online career, that much I must admit.
