Are you using some kind of tree mod there to grow trees in the lots?

Nicely done! I've always wanted to lot these homes in a similar style. Also love the alleyways with the garages. I've always tried to bake the alleys into the lots themselves instead of simply using streets, but this looks great. Having the garages hang out slightly over the sidewalk works really well.

Did you try using overlay textures for the back pathways? I'm guessing those are props, based on the z-fighting.

You did this really really well!

How'd you do the alleyways? Are the houses growable? How'd you get the power lines?

I'm thinking about releasing a set of houses with back alley support by way of requiring roads on the front and back, similar to a corner lot setup, just front and back instead of front and R/L. Any thoughts on that method vs the way you did this?

Huge thumbs up.

Thanks, glad you like it! The houses are from Jmyers Homes Vol 1. What you see in the picture are 2x11 custom plop lots that allow 18 houses to fit on a 1/8 mile block, which is standard in Chicago. The power lines are props from Bipin's industrial pack, offset a few meters with Model Tweaker so that they can extend past the edges of the lot. This is what it looks like in LE:

I agree that road networks on both sides are the way to recreate residential alleyways. The problem with alley lots is the strip of lawn/sidewalk where the entrances should be. It just doesn't look convincing when they aren't continuous with the intersecting streets. I opted for the asphalt streets from the SAM since they are narrow and don't produce street signs where they intersect with road.

Thanks. The garages are a mix of props from IDS2's set of Minneapolis houses, c.p.'s 19th Century Homes pack and Maxis props. I need to offset them so that they match the edge of the alleyways a little better. The lot was meant to be a proof of concept so lots of other things need fixing too. The pathways are props since overlays wouldn't line up with the houses. I hope if I raise them that will fix the Z-fighting (never knew there was a word for that!).

Ah--I was wondering with the spacing of the homes whether you might be using props because the lots don't line up. I've made my own overlay textures in the past to fix similar issues, but that can be a lot of work.

For alleys, one other option I've thought of trying is simply making the alley itself as a separate eye-candy lot (or a set of puzzle piece lots if I want variable length alleys).

It's nice to see how well IDS2's garages match up with the JMyers houses. I wouldn't have expected them to work that we'll. Smart move using an offset. I thought you might have just shrunk the occupant size of the props so the edges could dangle over the lots. I always forget that the Model Tweaker offers the offset option.

Also interesting to see that it's all one extra-long lot. I had originally assumed they were a series of smaller growable lots that you'd grown using blockers/tilesets/controlled zoning.

Looking forward to more screenshots from your cities!

In my experience, 3 inches is enough to stop z-fighting.

This is really cool stuff. You're pioneering something right here... I hope you upload them to the exchange one day. Very convincing Chicago vibe!

I'd love to do Queens with the same "technology" :P

Are they classed as a "parks" lot then?

British Rail made some of their 4-VEP electric multiple units for Roseland Railways in the 1970s. Here, a 12 car formation leads an evening commuter train through the suburbs of East Frenchester in the mid-1980s.

Downtown Frenchester early on a Friday morning, before the rush hour, in Summer 2009. A perfect time to soak up the city's eclectic mix of building styles before the lawyers and bankers arrive.

Just out curiosity, how did you retain the old monorail rail texture? I'm on NAM 32; can't update due to an old system. BTY, nice job!

Hi @City Boss

Might depend on what you've installed, but if you are only using NAM 32 components, you should find a z___NAM folder in your Plugins. Inside that folder there might be a folder named Shinkansen Bullet Train Mod if you selected it when installing. Removing that will display the default Monorail.

Curious why you are using NAM 32? If you are on a old system, NAM 42 can be used without the 4GB patch as a 'lite' version. I highly suggest you upgrade to NAM 42. It will also give you the old monorail texture back as the BTM was pulled from the NAM core mod.

It will simply give you a better playing experience. Sorry if I'm going off topic here, but upgrading will do the trick for sure.
