About This File

This is a huge region 60km x 104km. It is most of North Yorkshire and the southern bit of County Durham in England. Its a .SC4M file, but I have uploaded the greyscale image so you can see it before you render it. I tried to get a screen shot of the whole region but it wasn't letting me urgh.

It may be worth looking at your map and revising it. from the pictures, it looks really ill-developed and needs reworking. It would've been good apart form the fact that the elevation formations are blocky and unrealistic. Not so ideal as a map to use and you should considering re-releasing it once you solve that issue if that's the outcome of the map.

I've seen this before on a map I downloaded from here, it was a good map but the elevations were abrupt as this. Then again, I still enjoyed the map and it's not really a problem, as a quick once over with the smoothing tool on terraformer and you're done. Considering I always do that anyway to add my own ideas to a region i'd say this map is OK.

It does seem like a large map, but for me, that's pretty much the only selling point here. I like that you tried to make a replica of a real-life region, but is that really what County Durham and North Yorkshire looks like? No geographical features and flat-edged shores? Take a look at other popular maps and see the level of work that they put in, that's my suggestion.

I just made the map based on the elevation data, so I dunno how to add all the details unless I go though each tile and add t myself.

The problem is that it's really hard to get decent elevation data for the UK - OpenOS is your best bet, but then you need something to read that data to make a greyscale bitmap. Even then the results are less than satisfactory normally (I think OpenOS is 50m DEM data so everything gets "stepped").

I did the area just north of this a while ago (which I'm currently playing on), Tyne & Wear down to Durham, and to try and get it working nicely in SC4 I ended up spending a LOT of time in Photoshop with custom terrain brushes, softening, lessing contrast values, re-routing rivers slightly so that they don't go "odd" at city boundaries (that's the worst bit) ... only when I was happy with it, and had it in-game, did I realise that I should have blurred the coastline and river edges more as the drops are too steep and you can't drag pipes or subway through (and it's made creating the docks and Sunderland tricky, having to do a lot of raise/lower to get seawalls to work nicely)... so I've had to do some god-mode fine-tuning in game.
