Skoplje ( Скопје ), is the capital and the largest city of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Situated in the Vardar river valley, this city was severely damaged in a strong earthquake in 1963. Around 80% of it was devastated. Interesting note is that after the earthquake, the city was rebuilt thankfully to the architect who also took part in Hiroshima rebuilding.
It is an old city which even was the capital of Serbian medieval empire of Emperor Dušan.
