It will really help designing the HSR network as normal rail has a lot more capabilities (puzzle pieces etc) than HSR.

Kind of late to the party but to the people confused by the usefulness of this, it lets me direct HSR traffic over the nice-looking bridges available for heavy rail.  This way I don't need to pollute the scenery with the ugly modernist HSR bridges.

It is also very common in real life that high speed trains use the heavy rail network because of a lack of space/not enough money. It could add more realism this way. I will definitely use it in my city!
