About This File

This lot houses 2872 low-wealth Sims. The federal government foots the bill, but be prepared to pay for services such as increased police patrols.

For realism, try plopping a few of these end-to-end.

------------------------------

Loosely based on the Robert Taylor Homes and other high-rise public housing projects in the Midwest. The real Robert Taylor Homes are part of a four-mile-long strip of high-rise public housing along the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago and are the largest housing project -- and largest concentration of poverty -- in the United States. During planning, the towers were viewed as idealistic "islands in the sky," and had their own schools and other services, "a city within the city."

The name of the project belied its future - the towers were named after a former head of the Chicago Housing Authority who had resigned a decade before they were built when he realized Chicago politicians were using the projects to reinforce segregation in the city rather than for the lofty goals espoused at the time.

At one time, the postal service refused to deliver mail to the Robert Taylor Homes. "Our motto says to deliver mail in rain, sleet, and snow, but it doesn't say anything about dodging bullets," the postmaster of Chicago said at the time.

The Robert Taylor Homes, along with most other high-rise projects in Chicago, are an admitted failure and are in the process of demolition.

This is my first lot, so suggestions, esp. from you pros, are welcome.

-----------------------------------------------

UPDATE: This should now work the couple of people who were having problems seeing the buildings.

Great...it looks very realistic. Growing up in New York, living in Newark, I associate major cities with major housing projects. New York led the league in these towers for a number of years. Here in Newark, we just bulldozed the last set.

For some reason, when I plop it, it automatically puts up a no road connection zot even though it is connected to a road. Soon afterwards, it goes abandoned due to commute time.

This is perfect for those who want to increase the population of their city and also give it a more urban look.
