  1. Of course, politics and current events rapidly change language. I saw when I was young how quickly the suffix "gate" after Watergate become an indicator for scandal. But for non-politics and not current events what do you have for rapidly changing English? I am thinking of the word "merch" has taken about a year to start replacing "merchandise". Got, any good ones?
  2. We've learned a lot we didn't know about how to make separate language entries for the additional information we display in our expanded User Interfaces which pop up when Querying buildings. More specifically, the details contained in the LTEXT - Language Text Files over on Devotion. Now, y'all won't need to go read that unless you are interested in the nuts and bolts under the hood. However, what we do need your help with is translating some simple words and phrases which we will then use for writing the tutorial @carlosmarcelo asked for here. Our Crime and Police UI is much simpler than the one for City Hall, so we plan to get it fully translated first with y'all's assistance. In order to prevent the Phantom Slider Bug (while at the same time eliminating the need to bulldoze all prior police stations) our mod removes them from the Police Menu and assigns them a name which shows they are the unmodded vanilla version. As such, in English, we've simply prefixed each one with the word "Vanilla". Btw, vanilla in this case is derived from a flavor of ice cream and basically represents unmodified or plain. Here's a sample of the UI for a renamed Maxis Small Police Station: Now, the four building names we need in other languages: Station Names: Vanilla Police Kiosk Vanilla Small Police Station Vanilla Large Police Station Vanilla Deluxe Police Station ^ Please copy and paste these, then provide their equivalent in your language, and also let us know what language that is. If Vanilla isn't as descriptive for this in your language, you could use "Maxis" or "Generic" or such for that part. Next up for translation is the extended data we display under the original Maxis info: Expanded Data Info: Citywide Annual Crime Data Total Crimes Total Arrests Police Efficiency Efficiency Change vs Prior Year Crimes per Capita (100k) Capita Change vs Prior Year Intransigent Occupants ^ Same thing here. Please copy and paste these, then provide the translation into your language. Note: Since some languages are more verbose (longer) than English tends to be, we recommend simplyfying the translation as much as possible, while still retaining the same meaning in your language. So try to translate in as few words as possible, which also keeps accuracy in the meanings. We can widen the panel width somewhat, but there is a balance so it can be suitable without needing to be fortyleven miles wide. Then one other thing for this mod is that we've added a linky to the Maxis pop up message when there is a jailbreak due to insufficient capacity. The original, unmodified version looks like this: All we've done is to make the words "increasing the budget" become a hyper link which pops up the Master Budget for the Public Safety Department like this: Advisor Message: Show us what words are the same as "increasing the budget" in the following for your language: (Country flag icons provided by: https://flagpedia.net ) 0x02 French: L'état de crise a été déclaré ! La surpopulation carcérale et le mauvais financement des prisons ont rendu les évasions inévitables. Nous allons essayer de rattraper le plus d'évadés possible, mais ce n'est qu'une solution provisoire !   3. SC4 Global Locale Inquiry Request for Quick Game Test The future of our MZ City Halls Panel (and others) are in your hands! Background While working on stuff for ModPacc Zero, we've learned that our extended data display query panels need to be aware of the player's local language because that determines how numbers should be formatted. (Thanks to @TheMurderousCricket for testing our 1st Beta - All 3 City Halls Fixes + 1 for ModPacc Zero where this need was discovered.) How You Can Help We've created a special ploppable lot which will show the information we need to know per language. Please download the file attached at the end of this post, plop it in your game, take a screenshot, and post that here. Then also, please reply with what Operating System your comp uses, the language you have your comp set to, and the language you use when running the game. We have tested by setting the game to every language it supports, but a key question is if the returned info is always the same or if it changes based on the OS's language or not. So, for instance, will it return Portuguese_Brazil.1252 as we see it or Português_Brasil.1252 as we suspect? We need to know because our code will look for an exact text match to determine how to proceed. Note: If the locale name contains any special characters (those above ASCII 127) that part will get truncated which is why our panel also shows the byte values of the complete text string. Languages to Test With The following are ones we need to know listed in the hex code order the game uses.   5. NAM Spanish Project

    Ladies, gentlemen, good evening. Eleven months ago I contacted @Tarkus, offering my help regarding a possible translation of the NAM to the Spanish language. I was asked then to translate every single LTEXT from NetworkAddonMod_Locale_english.dat. I'm saving the changes by creating a new NetworkAddonMod_Locale_spanish.dat file. However, I request some assistance concerning several points: 1. There are several entries marked as "Unknown" with uncomprehensible symbols and letters or readable letters separated with points, namely: 2. In case it can, how will it be implemented in NAM 37? 3. What are the other core/documentation files to be translated? I'd like to open this up to Hispanic-speaking players. Let's talk about it friends. NetworkAddonMod_Locale_spanish.dat
  6. I recently bought a copy of SimCity 4 from GOG. I installed the game but when I ran it, it was in Dutch instead of English. GOG has been very helpful but the problem persists. I have tried "language setup .exe. But no help. I have even tried removing the folder that says Dutch, but it did not make any difference. I am really not sure what else to do. If anyone else has had a problem like this I would love to know how you fixed it. Any suggestions are welcome. I should mention, that I had another working copy of the game. But I lost the game and my external hard drive (the install file was there). So I know the game will run properly on this computer. I went to GOG for a replacement because I could not remember where I purchased the original game.
  7. Sorry but this is a repost of a topic I submitted earlier to the SimCity (2013) forum by mistake. I have recently begun to experience a very strange problem with my SimCity 4 game which was downloaded from GOG a few years ago. I have played this particular game for about 3 years and am just now beginning to have a problem with the language that appears on the screen when I play the game. A few days ago, for some reason, the screen language switched from English to what looks like some sort of Scandinavian language for no apparent reason (see screen shots below). I tried to research this to determine what was going on but could find nothing. I then decided to just solve the problem by doing a fresh, clean reinstall from my original GOG download but the same thing continues to occur. Except for this problem everything else is working fine as before. I am at a total loss and would really appreciate any guidance to help solve this anamoly. Thanks in advance for your help

    I bought simcity 4 deluxe on steam but I can't change the language because I didn't find language folders inside. Changing language through steam setting is not rational too since it can't download language pack with some connection problems always. Is there any tutorials for simcity 4 deluxe on steam about changing language? Thanks!
  9. Hello fellow City engineers I love this game and I'm sure a lot of people in my country would like to play the game, but they can't, because they are not speaking english. Is there a way how to create mod, which would change the language in the game? I don't know how modding in this game works, but I can imagine if there could be text extracted from the game, translated and imported back again, that could be working. Or am I wrong. Is that even moddable? If such a mod could be easily editable, having this game in all languages could be a matter of a week. Just one fan in that country with decent english skills would be enough. Or am I too crazy?

  11. Article. Seems many words and phrases were invented and came into the language in Shakespeare's works. Is the Bard included in the high-school curriculum in your area? Far as I know, it still is in most Ontario schools. It would be a shame to shuffle off this mortal coil without a touch of Elizabethan class.

    Today's giggle. Too late to lock this barn, the horse left centuries ago. The isolationism of Japan before 1945 is starting to show results in very strange places. Not only English and Japanese, but as the article notes, German and French are insidiously creeping in. The world is developing towards a common argot, and nothing anyone does is going to prevent it. The Internet is making it easier for this to happen, eh? Oh, and advertisers and big fiscal interests are not helping. "smallenfreuden" is a portmanteau word containing corrupt English and German. Ach! What are we doing? Even those linguistic purists in Quebec are not doing a very good job preserving their archaic Joual. L'Acadamie Français, which does its best to preserve Parisian French would not recognize a phrase like "ça ne fas rein" and would replace it with "Ils n'y a pas de quoi". Alors, c'est la même chose! It is all the same meat with different gravy. Everyone please insert your babel fish.
