resid, commercial and ind all in different cities
Robotica replied to dick209's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I'm not sure the game is built to be played this way. It may seem like it would work, like it should work, but in actuality the game was developed to be quite different. The game was originally built to be almost like an MMO, expecting you play interact and play with others. Because of this, you are never really ever to play more than one city tile at a time. What this means is, each tile is supposed to contain all the required parts. Having each tile a single zone type defies that notion, and while it isn't totally impossible it isn't necessarily totally possible either. It kind of works, and it kind of doesn't. You can make each tile it's own zone type, and you can even ship goods from one tile to another, but the game doesn't really know how to handle it properly. Maybe it is because the tiles your not playing come to a hault once you leave them, or maybe it's because of a million other things, who knows. Hopefully this stuff will be rectified with offline mode, but I sort of doubt it. My best advice would be to develop slowly. Make your first tile a "starter" tile, give it everything it needs to produce the necessities of other tiles like power, sewage, etc, make sure the tile can fill its own jobs. Then add more industrial than that tile needs, but not too much. Then make another tile, make this your residential and commercial. Build it up and make sure to keep adding more industrial to the other tile as the res and com build up. Once you have the second tile built up, go back to the first one with your industry and services and slowly remove the residential from it, until you have enough workers commuting. Make sure you have an absolutely impeccable transportation network laid out. Make sure you are using ALL the options, and make sure that there are no hangups in importing/exporting. Also if possible try to make your industrial hubs city tiles that utilize more than one entrance/exit. Have backups in place in case things go for the worse. Once things begin to spiral out of control it won't take long for everything to fall apart. Rather than have one tile that provides services to everything, try having 2. Also, be weary of staying in one tile for too long. -
Yes well this was proven quite a while ago as well. Its pretty obvious at this point that the server is nothing more than a drm check and a save point for your cities. Apart from that, I dont think online functionality is much, if any. The whole debacle about handling calculations through the online cloud was just bullshector, so don't worry you will not suddenly endure a slew of new processes while playing the game.

Why does it say, No Water, constantly?
Robotica replied to Herdervriend's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
What exactly is the problem you are having? Is it possible that your water is polluted? Look for clues as to what the problem with your water is. It could also be that you have the pumps connected to a road which doesn't connect to everything... Also if your water pump is at one corner of your city, and the other corner is far away with few connecting roads it is possible that the water isn't making it to the other side of the map. Same thing happens with electric, sewage, trash, any service. They all go along roads, and the further they are from the source the longer it takes to get there... And if you only have one main connecting road to and from your services they can have difficult times finding the way across. My suggestion would be to look at your water view and see if any buildings are suffering from water loss. Look at the way the water is flowing in your town. You can see all of that with the proper map overlay.... I forget its name but I believe its just water... -
Ionica - The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Robotica commented on MilitantRadical's City Journal Entry in Ionica
Not to sound rude but I dislike the snow effect. You have made some really amazing cities here, but the snow effect distorts it and makes it harder to see. And, to be fair, I don't like weather effects in general. I seen a rain effecet I kind of liked once, but not really. I prefer just clear pics... But hey thaats just me :)- 12 Comments

Hello everyone, I would like to know if anyone has any experience with running SweetFX with SC4. Doing some searches did not seem to return anything. I see there is some stuff for the new SC13, but I am specifically looking to intigrate it with SC4. I don't know much about SweetFX, but I have used it with a few games and it has made a noticeable impact with what it does. I believe in order for the game to work it must be DirectX compatible which I believe SC4 is... I installed SweetFX to the best of my knowledge into the game (which I have installed under Steam), however it did not seem to take any effect, at all. So, anyone know how to get it working? Or, does anyone know of something like SweetFX for SC4? Basically some type of mod/tool to help enhance and improve the overall graphics of the game? Seeing as the game is so old, I almost don't think it's possible to use Sweet FX, but if we would it may be awesome Thanks ladies & gents

Hey guys, I have just installed the Columbus Texture Mod and it's truly amazing. By far the best terrain mods I have found. Anyways, one of the options is for snow, which I believe I have installed correctly, but when I load a map that uses snow the transition of the snow to the surrounding textures is kind of jagged and hard. I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to look or not, all the photos I can find of it are really tiny and far away I can't really determine what the edging of the snow looks like. I have attached a little picture of what I am talking about, I hope this helps. I would upload a full screenshot but its larger than the site will allow I am only using this and a different rock mod for terrains. Even without the custom rock mod the snow looks the same. I have tried downloading the mod from a few different sources, and while some have different variations of the files, they always have the same transitions. If this is correct, does anyone know of a way to make it look better? I tried using the snowcapped version and its got the same issue. I do have a lot of mods installed, like a lot... I'm not sure how to tell if it's something else conflicting...

The Cities of Yesterday 'Challenge'
Robotica replied to EliasRex83's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I would love to see some cities like this, unforunately I don't think we will see anyone submit a city.... maybe if enough of us say we want it, someone might I have made some rural type cities that are not the typical skyscraper town that this game pushes you towards. However, after getting your city to a certain point you really just have to move on cause there is nothing left to do. If I still had this city I would post a screen, unforunately this city was rather old and I deleted it a long time ago. Once a new patch comes out I pretty much start everything over from scratch. -
Bigger maps no doubt. bigger maps is the most important thing they can work on, period. but hey thats just my opinion. Besides bigger maps? How about modding... I would be willing to pay for that, well if it was for more than just retexturing anyways. What else... Hmm... Having more aesthetic options and possibilities. Maybe expanding on parks and giving us a better park system, kind of like in SC4 where would could get mods for making modulated parks. It allowed us to create really advanced, really unique parks. It wasn't restricted to just parks though, they also had modulated graveyards, canals, sidewalks, etc etc. Really just more ways to customize my maps... But to make that be a real asset we need a much larger map.

No, and it's impossible to mod because EA hasn't released modding tools. (P.S. Try playing SimCity 4, it features built-in one way roads. Additionally, there are 100,000+ mods to choose from.) Its not impossible to mod Simcity 2013. Oppie and ProcsKalone have released multiple mods for the game and Oppie is close to releasing software to make mods for it. Its not impossible. I may be wrong, so forgive me if I am, but the way I understand it you can only retexture/remodel props, not change the inherit functionality of an asset/prop. The problem with the one way roads is that a one way road needs unique functionality, different from all other road systems in the game. Since you can only retexture stuff you won't be able to develop the unique functionality of a one way road... meaning you could retexture a normal road to use a one way road texture, but it will still function as a normal 2 way road. For instance, Oppie has released a lot of mods, but they are all reskins of previous ingame mechanics. The mcdonalds and burget king buildings (which are awesome, by the way) do not actually add whoppers and bigmacs to the game. That would be cool, but unfortunately not possible the way I understand it.

City Case File: Flagstaff Hill
Robotica commented on Kieren Barnett's City Journal Entry in Negishi Rebooted (SC4)
I might do, but my game is lagging quite a bit, so I wont be adding too much to the addons. Well if you are going to build on something other than flat terrain the most important mod you could use would probably be a good slope mod. it makes all the difference with roads. It turns jagged hard looking roads into smooth realistic roads. But, it comes at a price, and working with short and steep slopes is pretty much impossible with some of the slope mods so just keep that in mind. -
Best zoning lot sizes to build?
Robotica replied to TeddyAbbie's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Actually your totally right you can lay out a 3x3 block but the game may (and probably will) turn it into three 1x3 lots. I am however curious if the he ever splits blocks vertically as well and what I mean by that is instead of 3x3 becoming three 1x3 if it would ever become something like three 1x2 and three 1x1... -
Well ultimately, my point is that in this SimCity, all you can realistically do is make small towns, so this thread is very appropriate. Actually, all across of the web you'll see cities being made in the new SimCity. Look, if you don't like the game, don't participate in the discussions. It's that simple. I don't have to like the game to get to participate in discussions. Sorry, but may have to read opinions that don't happen to coincide with yours. When I look all across the web, I definitely do not see big cities being made in the new SimCity. People might be able to create a portion of a big city, but it's simply not possible to create a realistic looking big city. Back to the point of this thread, I think this SimCity does a very good job of enabling players to create realistic-looking towns/small cities (depending on how you distinguish the two). I didn't say stay out the forums, I said if you don't like the discussion, you don't have to participate. That truth remains. Also, I don't have a problem reading different opinions. If you haven't found big cities being made in the new SimCity, then either you haven't looked, or your opinion of a big city is different. I see them all over. If I want to make a realistic looking city, I wouldn't use a game to do so. Why? Because's its a game. If you think you can do that in SimCity 4, or Cities XL, great - I'd suggest playing them. I just see a lot of non-valuable negativity coming from you about the new SimCity. I was going through some old posts and came across this. What a load of bs... I love how you say if you looked and you cant find it then you obviously didnt look hard enough, but at the same time you don't bother to even link a single one to prove your point. I mean it should be soooo easy right, because there are soooo many of them alllll over the web like you say. I mean just look guys, people are making massive realistic cities with the new sc and if you don't believe it or you can't find it then oh thats because your so stupid and don't know anything... Your pathetic, absolutely fucking pathetic and you really should learn to not only stop lying and being delusional but how to also prove something when you want to tell someone they are wrong. Merely saying something does not make it so, you must prove your slanders to have any merit at all. And, at this point you have done nothing but state things which are obviously, OBVIOUSLY false for the current state of the game. And, if you think you can not make realistic cities with SC4 or Cities XL YOU should go search because THOSE actually return THOUSANDS of projects that have been built by players all over the world. God I hate people like you, who are delusional and try to push your ignorance on others. Oh, and here are some links to prove my point. Actually I am not even going to bother searching, instead I will just post links to the various city journal forum categories on here and if you look at any of them you will see exactly what I am talking about: Cities XL: https://community.simtropolis.com/forum/62-cxl-city-journals/ SC4: https://community.simtropolis.com/forum/11-sc4-city-journals/ And just so other players reading this can really understand how stupid you are, here is a link to the SC13 city journals. Notice how not only do all the cities look the exact same, but they are all laughably small and do not even remotely deserve the adjective of large. SC13: https://community.simtropolis.com/forum/193-simcity-2013-city-journals/

Things are generally okay and while it would be ideal to have everything exact that probably won't happen. There is an enourmous number of things that have to be done if I understand how this stuff works correctly, so to be fair I am not sure if something as minimal as this would even really be worth it. Actually looking at your photos I don't really even see any issues apart from the one bridge not properly lining up but that is, as you said, likely because of elevation.
-
It doesn't work like that you can't just build a mod if the game can't support it and this gam e only supports modding textures not game mechanics and unless they change that no one can help you. There was rumor of official one way roads though who knows if it will happen

Best zoning lot sizes to build?
Robotica replied to TeddyAbbie's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
This question reeks of SC13, so I assume that is why this is being asked. Meaning in SC13 you need to make sure you allow enough space for all hd buildings... or else... In this game though you really wouldn't want to leave all your zones at the same exact size it would just look strange. Instead you just need to make sure there is enough size for a few of the largest but instead of laying out specifically the larger block sizes you can just zone all 1x2/3/4 and the game will automatically make the block size larger as the building needs more space. So what I mean is you can lay a row of 6 1x3 and instead of getting 6 1x3 buildings the game will automatically give you some 1x3, 2x3 and 3x3 as it deems necessary. The only reason you would want to zone everything at the largest block size would be if you specifically wanted these large buildings to build at specific locations. The problem though is that you won't see the larger buildings until later on so you will have these empty blocks for long periods of time. -
Road ( Trench / Raise / Bridge / Tunnel ) Mod - XoXiDe
Robotica commented on xoxide's file in SC13 Roads & Traffic
Thanks for responding, I appreciate it. I do have a question now that I have thought about this some more. With this tool can you extend on an already started bridge or tunnel? In the base game you only get one shot at making the entire bridge or tunnel, and while this is okay for a lot of things it prevents you from having complex bridges and tunnels because sometimes you need to make a few connections to get the layout you want. Does your tool address this? looking at some of your pics I can't tell if you were able to make the entire thing in one piece or not... I'm also not sure I am explaining this clearly but I don't know what else to say about it lol. -
Road ( Trench / Raise / Bridge / Tunnel ) Mod - XoXiDe
Robotica commented on xoxide's file in SC13 Roads & Traffic
I really like the idea of this, but trying to build interchanges in the new SC has two major, major problems. First is that until we get 1 way streets making interchanges like this is utterly pointless. Hopefully they will be releasing them soon, I did hear about them at some point... But nothing about it in a while so we will see I suppose. The second problem and one that will likely never be fixed is the vast amount of space these interchanges require. Although your interchanges look really nice they take up what looks like a third or maybe a quarter of the entire map, that's just not feasible. In my humble opinion the only way interchanges like this would make sense is if Maxis releases some ploppables that will snap to roads and create snug little interchanges kind of like what we had in SC4 Rush Hour with the clover and T. Unfortunately I doubt they will be doing that, so we will likely have to be doing things like this, which yea will be too large really. -
Amazing work, some of the original photos that actually inspired me to start really getting into city builders. Unfortunately my cities built with CXL don't look nearly as impressive. One thing I would love to know about your work, and really others as well, is how do you get some of these effects? For instance, the very first picture with the title on it has a great tilt shift effect on it. I don't know how you would get some of these types of effects in game, so I assume they are added through Photoshop or something similar? Clouds, blurs, saturation, contrast, sharpness, tone & hue overlays, etc etc etc. Some of the city journals I can tell have obviously been edited with photoshop, but some of them, like yours, I am not certain about. So, again, great work. I really hope to build something as impressive as this someday! Who knows, maybe CXL will fix the performance problems and I can actually enjoy playing the game... And, that's the other thing, how do you guys with these massive cities work on them? When I get a city to around 100k I start noticing significant lag, even after reloading. It's so frustrating having to reload all the time, and then the crashes and bugs... ugh...

SimCity 4 or SimCity (2013)?
Robotica replied to GeometryMath Algebra's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Hey guys, this subject is quite close to my heart. I have a huge problem here, I can't make a sound decision for which one I enjoy more. Here is my typical process. Play SC2013 for a couple hours/days and build a couple cities, at which point I start feeling bored like I have done all there is to do. After the new 8.0 patch came out yesterday I was really excited, got home installed the patch, fired up the game and immediately started building on a new region. About 2 hours later I had just bout completed my first city on the region and at that point there was not only no room left but nothing left to add... So, I start the next city. About 10 minutes into the next city I thought, why am I doing the same thing all over again but in a different part of the region? At which point I got really bored, turned off the game and went back to SC4. Now, here is my problem, I get bored in SC4 as well. I love how complex and how open ended the game is, I really do... But, while I can build a full city in a matter of an hour in the new SC2013, building a full city in SC4 can take a week or longer depending! I feel like there is not a good medium between the two... But anyways, I am going to list my pro's and cons for each, maybe it will help someone decide! SC4 - Pros - Terra-forming - Ability to create unique and custom regions/maps, not to mention the thousands of custom maps you can download from others. - Huge tiles, ability to create giant cities, even scaled to correct proportions and all. - No forced online mode (aka offline mode) - Modding (and not just textures but actual game changing features and addons). This also means that new FREE content is steadily available for the game - Cheap, only 1 DLC to deal with, once you have SC4 and rush hour you will never have to spend another dime. - Tons of unique content, tons of possibilities, extreme deep and complex systems for totally custom layouts and builds. - Great community, amazing support from fellow players, thousands of tutorials, tips, forums, newsletters, youtube videos, etc etc to help new and advanced players alike further their mayor-cation. SC4 - Cons - Graphics are dated. With certain mods and some photoshop tweaking of screenshots you can make the game look pretty good, but no matter what the graphics are quite dated. - No real 3d camera, no WASD movement (without mod) - Game can be overly tedious (laying out water pipes, power lines, etc) - Building cities can be rather complicated, a lot of the systems are not very clear and it's easy to get lost on what is going on and what you need to do/build next. Not to mention the damned advisers are annoying as hell. - Though there is modding, official support for the game is long gone. Since the game is closed source, there are certain things that can and will never be fixed unless the source code is given out or made public. - Game has some technical limitations, which is due to the fact it was built over a decade ago. - And, just my opinion, but I really don't care for the interface, I have a hard time finding certain things and it's just clunky feeling. SC2013 Pros - Better graphics, full 3d support, built in filters and multi core support. - Still officially supported by Maxis, continual bug fixes and patches at no additional cost. - Multiplayer support - Greatworks - Professions - Modules for customizing various buildings (though its limited and if you max each building then they all look alike) - Vastly improved road system (even though the removal of highways and interchanges was an incredibly bad idea, but then again the tiles are so small that you really wouldn't want a full on highway and interchange there taking up space. - Improved simulation (in some ways, like cars/sims not disappearing, etc). SC2013 Cons - Small city tiles (biggest complaint by far) - Very few items to build. There are not many things to actually build, which leads to just about every city looking just the same as the last. However, I am hoping that the xpac will address this... but still we won't get things like seawalls, subways, advanced park structures, more road options, etc. - Always online (not multiplayer, but always online) - quite a few bugs, new patches also mean new bugs - Expensive game. I spent 60 bucks on the game and purchased all the $10 DLC and I will also pickup the $30 xpac, so I have spent well over a hundred bucks where SC4 I think I spent like 5 bucks... lol - Slow to fix stuff. Some game breaking bugs were left in game for months, hell a few are still in the game - Terrible community, just look at the forums, people are terribly upset (and I understand why) but it's a bit daunting to players who just want to play the game. - And, here is the biggie... The one that takes the cake... it's not as addicted. The game is simply too flat, too systematic, every city looks the same and really there isn't anyways to create utterly amazing and unique content. Which is sad, because the game is so close to being amazing... Anyways I am sure I missed a bunch of things, I am just rambling from the top of my head. Hopefully someone can get some use out of this. Oh, and if I had to choose between the two... I don't know, probably SC4 but it's situational. Sometimes its 4, sometimes its 2013... Depends on what I feel like. -
Hey, me too! What's going on?! Any others out there care to share more info in this dedicated thread? For reference, I have highly educated cities (which hasn't changed w/ the patch) and a fully built arco in the region Not sure what posts you refer to, but when I logged in and went to this area "Simtropolis Forums→ SimCity (2013)→ SimCity (2013) Problems & Technical Issues" The first thing I saw was this post, referring to exactly my problem. Then I see your post, go looking, and not much to be found on the appropriate topic. Hell, I even searched "tech level" and didn't see anything. Links appreciated. Ah you might be right, I may be thinking of the official SC2013 forums, that may of been where it was. I know somewhere I had seen a handful of topics about this, so if your still having this problem and want more details try looking at the official forums. A lot of people are dealing with this. Hopefully they will have it fixed, like today! It's a terribly annoying bug, and honestly I don't understand how something this drastic can get into the game. I mean, in all of their "testing" did not one of their test cities have high tech industrial? lol, I find that a little hard to believe, but oh well... At least they are aware of it now, even if it does mean dozens of people lost hundreds of hours of work on various cities

I just wanted to say that since update 8 it looks like my support city is actually working quite well. Freight and services are all moving well, and I haven't had any issues really. Actually my only real issue right now is a design issue, but at it's core is possibly an oversight by the designers/developers. Actually maybe one of you have an idea to help me. Sewage is a service that you can sell to neighbors. When you sell to a neighbor that cities sewage comes to you via the main entrance of your city. The issue is that the sewage follows a very distinct path and it stays clumped together. In my service city I have like 5 sewage plants and because the sewage is clumped together all of it goes to a single treament plant, but what I want is to split it up and send equal parts to each of the sewage plants.... How can I do that? Is it even possible? If its not then how in the world are you supposed to setup sewage for a neighbor? Sewage and water are 2 biggies that I want to get out of each city since they take up so much precious space. And, because water and sewage go hand in hand it really all needs to be together. And, I really don't want to split up the sewage plants into different areas of the map.. So.... yea

Building Abandonment Mod?
Robotica replied to Chuck The Mayor's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Here you go man, this should do what you need. I use it, and works great! It not only prevents buildings from becoming dilapidated, but also from downgrading and other problems. Now, of course its better to "fix" the underlying problem... but if your like me and could give a rats ass about the whole simulation aspect of the game, then your probably just worried about making a cool looking, pretty city! This will help, very much... I do suggest disabling it though if your wanting to actually play the game, and not just design a pretty city. Also, though it's not my cup o tea, there is definitely something to be said about cities that function efficiently and properly, and don't just look nice... -
Yes, common bug from patch. Please review the other posts on the forum, as there are quite a few players who are reporting the same thing.
-
Damn dude, I sure as hell hope I don't ever live in one of your cities Although I am still in my working prime, I don't want to know that I am waisting my whole life slaving away for you, only to be killed off when its finally time to take a break! No break for the sims, so sad...
-
its odd that you have to place the dll at the top of the folder. I use win 7 as well, and i just put the cheat dll in the root of my plugins directory and walaa works like a charm... I have a feeling you are doing something wrong... no offense though By the way, I uuse Win 7 myself and I love it
