  1. A farming community

After messing around for awhile, I've decided to play for real, using the Fairview region. My first city will be a smallish farming community. I figure a small downtown with some light commercial and residential, and farms. Should I put in any other industrial zones away from the farms or just keep it strictly agricultural? Suggestions welcomed. TYVM.
  2. A farming community

I was just thinking about wind power. I have to admit I'm still not used to not having a lot of things on a year specific basis like airports and bus service, etc as it was in prior game versions.
  3. Screen Resolution

    1680 x 1050. That's my monitor's native resolution.
  4. Region Building Questions

I have to admit I'm not liking this region concept much. I prefer the old way of playing one city with premade, albeit imaginary neighbors.
  5. Will not fixing this issue seriously impact the game? I'm not a numbers guy, it's all greek to me. After reading the Fix for the fix, I don't know if I want to get into all that work, unless game playability will really suffer from not using it.
  6. Do you ever do U drive it.

Eh.... I have yet to see a city mayor drive around with a personal motorcade of bodyguards. I guess you've never been to New York. I tried UDI for a couple of missions then promptly turned it off. Doesn't add anything to the game for me. *Sorry for necroposting but I was searching to see if UDI missions were necessary before asking in a new thread.
  7. I've seen the idea of cleaning up the plugins file by creating sub directories which makes sense. Can pretty much any mod files be place anywhere in the plugins file, under any heading. For instance, can NAM be placed in say "Mods"? Can the Z_ nam file be placed in the NAM file.? Can the TSCT file be placed in the NAM file?
  8. Plugin Sub directories

    Thank you.
  9. Plugin Sub directories

At the end of the NAM installation it asked if I wanted to install the TSCT and did so into a separate folder.
  10. This is great stuff. Is the music from the Original Sims available anywhere?
  11. Is there a way to get a tighter radius in the Cursor Circle when doing landscaping? The lowest default circle is a bit too big for areas like coast lines or making small adjustments for one or two squares. This is really an issue once a city is going. I like to build a lot of my main areas on flat ground, but I don't want to make a totally flat map at the outset, I like to change as I go, add and remove hills, but the rather large circle sometimes makes it hard when near already built areas, no to mention wasteful, moneywise.. Is there a way to landscape one or two tiles at a time? Thank you.
  12. Reconciling

I am using the Timbuktu region to do my first building on for now and have chosen the Getting Started tutorial city. I clear the map and reconcile the edges to bring it back to it's original form. From what I gather, anything I do at the map edges changes the joint between cities. For example, I usually place my coal power plant at the very edge so it will level any uneven terrain. Building a road connection levels the terrain a bit. Do these areas cause a need for reconciliation. I know what reconciliation does to anything built on the edges so what happens if I don't reconcile?
  13. Any advice?

Sure could have fooled me....... I can't get them to shut up, even on hard. My cities are all passing utilities between them which seems to create an insane amount of babble. Even when all the utilities are covered and funded, they just keep saying the deal needs to be changed, or reduced, or increased, even when it doesn't and/or you're not eve able to do so. I do like when they tell me pertinent things occasionally so don't want to shut them off completely. Wish there was a "happy medium babble" mod for the advisers. To reduce advisor gibberish, try unckecking the "Urgent Advice Dialogs" option in your game's settings. Doing this with the game on hard is probably the best way. Otherwise, will greatly quieten them down (although it doesn't disable them entirely). By the way, there's a handy translation of the description in the comments section. I sure hope the creator of that Mod is not a Native English speaker. I think that was the most painful to read thing I've seen since "Dianetics"...........
  14. Get your Maxis files here!

I have a Digital copy from Amazon. I'll check out those 2 plugins, thanks.
  15. Reconciling

Thanks. I've seen the havoc reconciling can cause. Not a pretty site.
  16. There are TWO plugin folders? Which one to use?

I love my SSD's. I have a 128GB Crucial M4 for my System Drive and a 256 GB M4 just for Trainz, which fills up quickly with extra content. I also have a 1TB HDD for data. With proper backing up of important stuff I find any risks worth taking for the extra performance, especially since the prices for SSD's have come way down and they are easy to replace. I thought about moving my page file, but with 16GB of RAM I wonder if it's ever used at all. I keep mine small, 512MB max.
  17. There are TWO plugin folders? Which one to use?

I think you should ask this question separately in its own thread. It should probably be in Bugs and Technical Issues. This is not a simple thing. A file that gets a lot of writes should not be on an SSD at all. And if you do it right, you split the SimCity 4 folder across both devices, keeping the mostly static stuff like your plugins on the SSD. Meanwhile, take a look at the idea of links or short-cuts in the NTFS file system on your Windows O/S. An SSD should never be your C: drive because you don't want temporary or swap files out there. A lot of write/rewrite activity can run an SSD up to its best before date very quickly. I know that initially writes and rewrites were a concern, but TRIM has gone a long way to alleviate that, SSD reliability has really improved.. Anything "valuable"I keep backed up in several places, the only thing on the SSD is the OS and installed programs. SSD prices have come way down, I just put in a 2nd one for Trainz, so if the C drive fails, I'll just replace it and reinstall my OS and Programs. No big deal.
  18. Get your Maxis files here!

A lesson I learned from Trainz that I will try to apply here. One question: If I just want to use custom content but not make any, do I still need to install BAT?
  19. Get your Maxis files here!

    Thank You. Good info.
  20. Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi. My name is Bernie, 52 and I live in the Great State of New Jersey. My turnons are Rainy days, long walks in the forest, puppies.........oops, wrong forum. I've been a casual gamer for the past 20 years or so, so I'm a bit of a late bloomer. I'm mostly a srategy guy, I started with SC 2000 and Allied General on Playstation. I moved onto PC games like the rest of "General" series, Close Combat, Axis and Allies, etc. I still have Civ4 on my machine and fire it up occasionally.I spend a lot of time with Trainz Simulator 12, I'm a big railroad aficionado. Never played Worldofwhatchamacallit or any of those online games save for World of Tanks. I am a big History buff, especially WWII. I like WoT, but the epeen waving and other childish nonsense that goes on there has made me not play nearly as often as I did, I'm not into all that competitive nonsense anymore, I leave that to the young crowd. I last played SC3000U a few years back and the new release had me hankering to play again. Unfortunately, I lost my copy of 3000. I figured I'd give SC4 a shot before trying the new version, I'm a bit put off by the bad press right now to be honestas well as the always online requirements. Yes, I am a baseball fan, unfortunately I root for the New York Mets.
  21. There are TWO plugin folders? Which one to use?

Can I move the "My Documents" SC4 file off of my Main SSD drive and onto my Data HDD where I keep a lot of my game stuff? If so, would it affect game performance?
  22. Precision Landscaping

That's what I'm looking for. Thanks.
  23. Precision Landscaping

Even with "ctrl" the circle is a bit too big for some uses. The street trick works perfectly. Thanks for that tip.
  24. Some great ideas here. I'm not one for hard "rules" either but some of the things suggested are quite handy. I don't have any myself as of yet, I'm still trying to figure things out.
