  1. Where to get GMAX

Hello All! I think that it would be handy so sum up what has been happening with the program Gmax and the possibilities to run BAT. First of all, no panic! There is absolutely no problem to accuire Gmax, and it is still free! What has then happened? Autodesk, the company who owns Gmax has cancelled their support for Gmax in the late 2005. The reason for this is believed to be that the gaming industry, who needs to pay Autodesk to have Gmax supporting their games, has lost interest in Gmax. No new games has got Gmax support in the last two years, and when the program brings no revenue, some person at Autodesk thougt that they should not pay for the maintenance/ downloads/ support of this program. You might think that this is silly and maybe I do it as well but the aim of this article is not to discuss this any further. It is like it is. Well when Autodesk spread the news about cancerling Gmax there were quite some protests among the gaming/ modding community, and Autodesk finally decided to let www.turbosquid.com, an affiliate to Autodesk who also distributed Gmax before its officcial cancellation, still have Gmax on download on their site and give out registration keys. But no-one knows how long turbosquid will continue to offer Gmax, so my five cents is that anyone interested in Gmax/ BAT should download the Gmax installer and save the installer on CD to have it the day when your computer crashes or you want to install it on a new system. You should also save your installation code. People have been reporting that old installation codes sometimes not are working, therefore I also recommend that You save the "installation code workaround" on your CD. Well, how do You download Gmax? First, You need to register as a user at www.turbosquid.com . When you are registered, You can go to http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax to download the program. Gmax is kind of hard to find in the menus so this direct link is very handy. You can download the program, and if You want the help files, textures etc You can download them as well. To get Your registration key, go to http://www.turbosquid.com/Support/gmax To download the installation code workaround, go here: http://www.fsalpha.com/gmax_tips/zip/+AutoDesk_GMax+zip If You have any problems installing Gmax, there is a forum on Turbosquid where various installation issues are discussed. Now when You have everything You need, do not forget to burn all the files on a CD, including your registration code. Also keep the CD in a safe place. A colleague of my mother had been smart enough to make CD backups on all her files, then her old dusty computer caught fire. She kept the backup CDs in a bookshelf mounted on the wall right over the computer and they were toasted just as the original data... Please make any comments or suggestions on this text. Maybe it should be posted as an article on the main page of Simtropolis because this is a matter that concerns all batters in the community. EDIT: PS. Sorry about the bad formatting.
  2. No one is using my rails!

Most likely the industry do not use the rail because they find a good (better) way to deliver their goods via road. Use the route query tool and see which way the freight trips from the industry next to the station goes. Then try to create a faster rail track or maybe demolish some roads to make road traffic less efficent and thereby force the traffic onto the rails. Good luck!
  3. Roman theatre

The night lights are cool but maybe the ground textures could have been better with a little more work. But overall a nice model and it is always nice to see european creations in the exchange!
  4. Is there a way...

There is sure a way to build underwater tunnels. The trick is to build the tunnel first and the water afterwards. Like: 1. Get yourself a flat terrain with a hill just tall enough to create a tunnel. 2. Build the tunnel. 3. Lower the hill. Lower more. Just do not demolish the tunnel openings in the process (needs some trial and error...). 4. Soon or later you have lowered the terrain enough to get under sea level. 5. Now you have two tunnel openings and a lake inbetween them. 6. Connect the roads (or rails or whatever you built). let the simulation run for a few months. You will see that the sims will use the tunnel. Good luck digging!!
  5. my first bat - need advice

This sure looks like a really good first attempt in BAT. I think the roof looks good now, but it sure would be nice with something in the large windows. In your next BAT, you should make the heigth of the forst floor taller, usually a sopping/ restaurant floor is taller than a residential/ office floor. Good luck batting!
  6. Berlin Set low wealth

    Version 1.0

    7,247 Downloads

Here is what Your low wealth Sims has always dreamed of! From this set, You can create whole neighbourhoods of those “Mietskasernen”. In those buildings your low wealth sims will find a nice home to long for on their 12-hours-a-day, 6-days-a-week shifts in the factories. In their homes they will find coal stoves to keep them warm in the winter, and all apartments have running cold water for your sim’s convenience. Lavatories and baths are comfortably located in the basement of every building, yes in fact even a few buildings have water closets on every floor, only shared by six tenants! This is a set of four low wealth buildings modelled after the typical Berlin Style. In Berlin, the lots are usually very deep and filled with back buildings, and so is the design of those BATs. You can find a larger picture of the buildings in the following link (not really 56k friendly :-). Right-click and open in new window! This set comes both as a growable and a ploppable version. The growable version houses 754 low wealth sims. You need two tiles wide and four tiles deep, high density lots for those beauties to grow. The ploppable version is found in the landmarks menu. It has no costs, but brings no revenue. Pure eyecandy, that is! I hope You and the sims in Your cities enjoy this building!

  11. Dinner Theaters Everywhere!!

It seems that the lot that brings the trouble is a 3 x 2 lot. Try to zone in different ways so that you get different lot sizes in every block, some one, some two and some three tiles deep lots. When development starts, landmark a few buildings in each block so that the theatre freak sims cannot change the lot structure.

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Hamburg - St Pauli. This is three small shops in a street corner, inspired by the borough of St Pauli in Hamburg. This building comes both as a growable and a ploppable version. The growable version is is a 1 x 1 CS$ lot with stats similar to the Maxis Small Shops There are two lots included, for left and right corners. The ploppable version is found in the landmarks menu. It has no costs, but brings no revenue. Pure eyecandy, that is! I hope You and the sims in Your cities enjoy this building! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Please have a look at my other buildings as well, right click and open in new window!

  15. Haus Kempinski

    Version 1.0

    6,867 Downloads

Haus Kempinski is a true luxury building with 8-11 room apartments. As you can see, many rooms have grand windows and quite a few also balconies and loggias. The house has a wonderful garden with a full-time employed gardener and it also has a tall fence around the garden to keep the poor sims out of this paradise. The house also has a little "Weinstube" (Wine Bar) on street level where many of the inhabitants go and have a drink when they come home from their workplaces. This building is based on the works in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Berlin by architect Albert Messel. You can find pics and drawings of the original building, as well as some pics from my workbench on this project in my building thread, here (you can right-click and open this link in a new window) This building comes both as a growable and a ploppable version on a 2 tiles wide and four tiles deep lot. The growable version is a stage 6 R$$$ building. It provides home for 321 rich sims, just like the in-game DuBoisPalace that is about the same size and also fills a 2x4 lot. The other stats are also the same as for DuBoisPalace. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Please note!! You need to zone four tiles deep and two tiles wide lots for this building, otherwise it will not grow! The ploppable version is found in the landmarks menu. It has no costs, but brings no revenue. Pure eyecandy, that is! I hope You and the sims in Your cities enjoy this building! Please have a look at my other buildings as well, right click and open in new window!

  22. BAT Help - Texturing Issues

The mirror tool makes textures goofy, but it is fortunately a REALLY simple workaround if You want to mirror Your stuff. Do not use the mirror TOOL/COMMAND (in the main toolbar), use the mirror MODIFIER (found in the modifier rollout). Thanks to the person (do not remember who) who pointed out this to me some time ago!

  24. I know how frustrating it can be not to get things to work the way they should. But You need to be more specific about your problem if you not already have solved it. If You have made a material in the material editor You should only have to drag it from the sample pic in the editor and drop it on the object in the scene. Cant You do ths or do you have a problem creating a material in the editor (like loading the bitmap?)
  25. I agree with sparkythepenguin, You need to adjust the colour of the lights to get it right. Now it is overall too much yellow so i would try to turn the lights a little blue and see how it turned out. To be really realistic, it should also look like the lights sources were mounted on the building. Now it os obvious that the main lights are held up by god
