SimCity single core rumour - not true!
Nique replied to SirChick's topic in SimCity (2013) Technical Help Q&A
Yea maybe i undue the pc spec date a bit but still. It's like developing Simcity 4 (2002) for a 1994 PC. -
Cannot Wait Until Tuesday SimCity (JUMPING AND DANCING IN EXCITEMENT!)
Nique replied to GridSpeed's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Apparently, you should be able to predownload it today (if you're in the United States). As for VPN... while there's nothing explicitly illegal about VPN (nothing explicitly illegal about torrenting either), I think using a VPN to get around a release date is probably getting into a very questionable legal gray area. Thank you for your excellent reply. About the pc specs... still kinda weird because simulation applications need more computing power than a shooter (in a simulation everything has a meaning, in a shooter.. most things are just static). I'm a simulation fanatic and i have an high-end pc. Would be great if there was an min/max slider for graphical detail and simulation depth. -
SimCity city sizes will “eventually” expand, says Maxis
Nique commented on Hellken's article in News
Look what SOE with Planetside 2 did: Free to play,.. and they earn more money now than just selling the game. €80,- for a game? They are crazy... I like the set-up of PS2. Now i had the chance to actually play the full game and feel if it's worth my money. The result is that i spend over €120 on that game. -

I still don't understand why they do this. It's 2013 and i buy the digital version but have to wait for the DVD buyers.. wtf.. Its the same as i wasted a lot of money on a good pc... because the game is optimized for pc's from 2005. Modern people are being punished -

Simcity can't be pirated because of the always online requirement. In any other case (other games) this kind of release schedule works piracy right in the hand as people want to play the game as early as possible. The same problem happens with movies and music. Labels release these products spread out during a week. So i'm more willing to buy an American Version as it gives me 2 days extra to play this week. -
SimCity single core rumour - not true!
Nique replied to SirChick's topic in SimCity (2013) Technical Help Q&A
In a nutshell: This game is made for 2003+ pc's.. ridiculous if you ask me. The gamers who have actually a 'game' pc are being punished. Single core pc's are obsolete. Don't play games on your dads laptop.. just don't. If you want to play games; buy a pc that can handle modern (2009+) games. Got a 4 core pc with 16GB Ram.. 13GB = waste for this game. 2 cores = waste for this game.. Great... -
Never seen the commercial but it is funny. (i rarely watch TV to avoid spam).

Most of the javascript functionality is gone.. Quoting doesn't work. the wysiwyg bar is gone when you want to reply. The topbar is now without submenu's. Ehw.. kinde weird. Before updating maybe it's better to test first .

nhgriffith wrote: ---------------------------------------------------------------- Well with all due respect but maybe you should look better before asking these kind of questions. There have been many attempts. And the new one has just popped from the horizon and is much more promising than all its predecessors. (what happened to simtropolis wysiwyg editor???)

Great, as if $$$60 is not enough. If it was a 'free to play' game i would understand. This leech strategy will kill this pethatic company called EA. And it takes Maxis with it.

I doubt Maxis can compete the artists of Simtropolis. But it seems they want to try it by keeping the mod ability for themselves. .. at least at release.. I predict a painful death of DLC if it only contains more cartoon buildings.

How to completely uninstall SimCity beta?
Nique replied to Charizard's topic in SimCity (2013) Technical Help Q&A
It will not be useless if we manage to set up our own server haha. After uninstall via control panel (windows) just run CCleaner (registry cleaner) a couple of times in a row and ur fine. -
Just like Mars. Geological dead. But i think something happened to mars because that scar is way to obvious. The earth produces heat. But what is strange though, when NASA crashed a vehicle on the moon some time ago, they measured shock waves going all the way around it. That indicates a hollow moon

Discussion about City Tile Size
Nique replied to alex macnamara's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
A small amount of people were able to program Proland.. A full, realtime planet renderer, and even without the new features of openGL 4.2 and DirectX11 with their tessellation support; Look what is possible these days in full 3d graphic rendering. Now why then make a agent based simulator that can not handle large environment. Why not stay at the statistical simulator and wait untill the right time (and good consumer computers that are able to handle more than 10 million agents at once). http://proland.inrialpes.fr- 1,284 Replies

So, here we are. I'm sorry this is going to be a rant. I played Simcity for a couple of times now and to be honest. I feel abandoned. Not by the game but by the Maxis Studio. The past years have been a waste of time. What happened to the smart people in the 80s and 90s? Ok, lets talk about the game; One should think, in 2013 it should be possible to program a better 'bordering' system that grows with city (land purchase or annexation). Nah, its just a square again and this time without bordering cities. One of the things that annoys me the most is the waste of space between lots in the already ridiculous tiny piece of land you get. There is no way you can fill them up with trees or other stuff. If you want trees, ploppable parks are the way to go. The only problem with parks is; yes they need to connect to roads too. And this is a problem. Not only with parks... Water and power goes by road now. How unrealistic is this? Very... This forces parks to be connected to the road because otherwise the lamp posts wont work right? Consequences are: waste of land between buildings. Maxis has put themselves in a corner. Why? Well the decision to go 'agent based' was terrible. In the 2000s they stated that the technology didn't allow full 3d graphics so they created a 2.5D game which looked awesome. Now, in the '10s we have enough graphical power to power full 3d cities. And what did Maxis do? Yes they 'created' a new limitation: Glassbox engine. Praised by it's high level of detail it produces; they forget one thing: It needs calculation power. A LOT of calculation power. So here we are, with a new excuse: The computers today can't handle bigger cities because it would need more processing power. Whaaaaaat? Why do you invent another limitation then? I did not feel any improvement in terms of simulation in comparison with Simcity 4. Let's make a list: I can not decide how big my (zoning) lot's will be. I can not plant trees I can not dig a river (to create a harbor maybe??) I can not fill spaces between roads I can not create unique looking parks (Boomtown lesson: place loose park props anywhere in the woods, do not make park 'lots') Where are the power lines? What about the water and sewerage pipes? This was a great opportunity to improve this system from SC4 Subway? Oh wait, a 10.000 city doesn't need subway Tunnels? Specialization??? WHyyyy? Why always dumb things out.. a city can have more specializations... Tilted what? Why put so many time in developing graphical trash like tilted shift blur. Nature gave me eyes that can focus on parts of the game without the 'help' of a tilted shift blur. What a waste of time. City Ordinances? Where are they? Have you seen that highway intersection? Whahahahahahaha Let;s say the devs made their life very difficult and way to complicated for the future. I mean, all these 'up-gradable buildings' with slots etc. this will take lot's of time to model it the right way. Was this the best solution Maxis could came up with? Just stick with growables and also; combine 'residential' models with custom props/texture sets so you can use the same building for a police/fire station maybe? Upgrading? Why a new 'sub building' slot that eats land? In a big city it is not possible to 'eat' land. Why not make a more efficient version of the model with 2 garage doors instead of one... In short; Making Simcity 4 full 3d and extend and improve the 'bad' things that came with it would give Maxis the jackpot with record sells. we must game look like disneyland. we must not listen to hardcore fans of early version we ignore critics and bend their question into propaganda for new glassbox engine I feel sorry for the hard working programmers in the team because while the game got kicked by people like me.. i know it is a lot of work to make. It's the decisions of the project leaders that ruins the game. No, i won't buy this game. In stead i would like to help Buggi with his Boomtown project.

At least power lines between cities if you have a power contract.. Or is it normal in "modern" times to put high voltages under a highway.. There are places in the world where digging for power lines is too expensive as of the rocky ground. For me it adds something to the game. Clearly not for you...
-
better question: why do you need power lines? they are obsolete. power runs along the road. tilt shift can be adjusted and turned off entirely in the gfx settings. Some of the points you make are valid but power lines are NOT obsolete. Besides the fact it brings more realism it is also a decorating item... And i do not complain about the effect of tilted shift, i complain about the fact they put development time in this feature while it is completely redundant.

That's because suddenly they stopped improving the game. They abandoned the original website and left many to figure their problems out on their own. And yes, SC4 was complex but in the long run, the game is still being sold. Some simple patches would solve most of the problems you mention here but they just refused to do anything on Simcity because they started to begin being obsessed with the Sims. I would say; bad market research. It's all about asking the right questions... Question: What did you like the most from Simcity 4: My Answer would be: The (god) freedom you get as a player (terraforming). The game doesn't force you in a direction! (Simcity 2013 does!) Question: What did you spend the most time on My answer world be: Organizing road networks Did you like it to spend this much time to do that? My answer would be: Hell yea! and pick the right words from answers. Just as they do now with all the critical reviews; they ignore it. And still; glassbox = bad choice if you can not support more than 100.000 agents as many cities exceed more than 100.000 sims and then you still have to multiply that number several times (fire, water, power.. you name it) to get the amount of agents. They just focus on the wrong things: - Tilted shift - Glassbox (agent based simulation) - Multi-player (mass) - Always online part

Simcity 4 Plugin Manager with Dependency support?
Nique replied to Nique's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
Good you mentioned this. But at this moment, custom content makers also need to make a list of dependencies. And today, it's a real mess. The MSYS package manager is a good example of how package management should be. As most content is downloaded from Simtropolis and SC4Devotion i think 'forcing' your members to upload their content with some additional variables will help a lot.- 5 Replies

Discussion about City Tile Size
Nique replied to alex macnamara's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
In one of Maxis's articles they stated that the've learned a lot about Simcity 4. But i don't see anything that looks close to Simcity 4 (for me the best simcity of all). Oh wait, i know one thing.. they probably took the box art literally in terms of city size: In the new Simcity they compress all the skyscrapers of New York in a town like Southpark... Now how do you call that a simulation. It's no simulation at all because it is unrealistic. SIM = simulation.- 1,284 Replies

Daily Mail Interview: Ocean Quigley: "We needed to reinvent SimCity."
Nique commented on Hellken's article in News
It would be great if Maxis / EA released source code of Simcity 4 for the fanbase so we can add more 'draggable' components and a high quality closest zoomlevel. Also, it would be great if Maxis released all the tools they've created and used to create Simcity 4. This way, you don't have to 'reinvent simcity'. Simcity 4 was good enough. Everytime you guys release a game you choose for the hard way, the most difficult way so that the game is binded to limitations of the computers at the time being. Why not use the tech as in Simcity 4 but make it with just 16 view angles or so. Just upgrade Simcity 4 with more features and you got simcity 5. The biggest thing, even bigger than the limited city size, besides that you can not build highways... on a 'state' level is the fact that you can not modify the terrain. Now what the heck did they think when designing this new Simcity? REally..
