Not played before but am interested in giving it a go. Have watched several youtubers play recently. No idea how much time I will need to commit. Any recommendations/advice for a first-time player?

Cities: Skylines - worth it for a £tenner?

Are you sure you didn't take that straight out of Cities: Skylines? Nice work anyway!

Running the Windows version of Simcity 4 on Mac in a virtual machine
DavidB_ replied to haap303's topic in SC4 Mac Users
Although the original post in this thread was written for VMWare Fusion, I reckon you should give VirtualBox a try. It provides all the same functionality as the big two, and it's totally free! -

Looks better for sure, I like the forest you've planted around it Got me in the mood to show off a simple urban junction and highway system: In case you're wondering, I am using the Ennedi Slope Mod - the 'Mount620.dat' file. Obviously it means you have to plan out your urban network a little differently (I tend to remove the mod when building Maxis/vanilla tunnels or bridges) but one would say it's worth it, wouldn't you?

Well I understand it can be a steep [learning ] curve but if you can bear to nerve yourself for what is actually not as much of a challenge as it first looks; it's absolutely brilliant!
-
So far a good job. Me'thinks a slope mod is called for, along with 'clean' screenshots:- sans overlay

You're certainly not going to dissuade others of us from having a go?!

You're trying to use puzzle pieces?

.dll files are Windows-only, extracheats.dll is not compatible with the Mac edition. As for the comments on a supposed ban, they're just toeing the company line. They certainly can't revoke access to a game you paid a one-time fee for, not on an individual basis. As for the console not opening, have you tried with a fresh install? Take care to make a copy of your cities for safekeeping. I don't use 'money tree' mods so can't comment there.

Problems with plugin lots.
DavidB_ replied to Bondi St. Blues's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
They're using the 2014 Aspyr rerelease which was purchased through Steam: And yes, please provide for us the URLs for the content you have downloaded. -
You can say that again! There isn't the space for a full-whack airport in any of my downtown clusters; a barebones runway is stretching it for a small tile. Not to mention public transport (of which I attempted a working system in my city journal region some years ago) and above all balancing the budget!

No Road Connection in all residential buildings
DavidB_ replied to Angry_Bubble's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
In several of my cities I've had the same problem, including one I'm working on right now. I upgraded several roads to avenue or Tram-in-Avenue, which has led to several of my north-south corridors causing abandonment of my high-density residential zones ("no road connection") but only on one side of the road! As far as I can see, there's no problem with jobs, it's only happening on a few avenues built directly on a neighbour connection. Have let the game run for a few in-game years, no change. If there's any chance of a solution or just advice, I'll be happy to put up some screenshots.- 13 Replies

Any way to be able to play simcity 4 without disk ?
DavidB_ replied to Sim Playerr's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Aware as I am that it's been advised against, I did purchase a digital edition on Steam. Why? Aside from the fact that I so far have only signed up to Steam (the app itself must remain open to authorise DRM) - I grabbed it for £2.49/$5 (75% off) for my MacBook -
The north-to-east overbridge slip road is longer than necessary, I would redesign it following the red route I have marked. There is also opportunity to construct the missing west-to-north MIS. In any case I like what you've done with the scenery and setting, can't wait to see more! Took a stuttering start but I'm back to life, wielding the NAM like a mighty pen... oh I've still got a month of exams left

Apologies that I haven't commented sooner, but surely dragging the road out one tile into the path of the avenue, and drawing the avenue on top, should work? If you can picture this and try it again; I've been doing it since my vanilla PPC days on the Mac with never a problem.
-
Was grinning gleefully when I saw this... but then I noticed, PC only! Not that it would work so well on my main Mac, mind. I'm sticking to the SC4 Aspyr rerelease and NAM 32.1, thank you very much
-
how-to I have NAM 32 installed on my Mac with the Aspyr Re-Release Version. Well, most of it.
DavidB_ replied to brunoresende29's topic in SC4 Mac Users
Answers: 1. You need to do a custom installation and look for the "Maxis Highway Override" option and check the box next to it. You don't have to uninstall the NAM first; each new install overwrites the previous install and it remembers which options you had installed previously. 2. I'm not sure what exactly you're getting at. Could you please explain what these "custom menu options are" that you want? As far as I can tell, BuffaloMaine is referring to daeley's BSC Menu Management Lot Mod (MML) (), a precursor of sorts to his Daeley's Advanced Menu Navigator (DAMN). -
Ignoring I-HT from spawning in certain section of my city
DavidB_ replied to Tam0's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
To unlock the Space Port legitimately (I managed it previously), if you're wanting to prevent I-HT growth for a while... You could either tax the I-HT sector to hell (though that would likely cause abandonment of your existing development) or you could use the "BSC No Maxis Files" (I-HT blocker only) plugin to prevent the Maxis lots from growing for as long as you need. And remove the plugins for any growable lots you may have installed, but keep the lots themselves in place so you don't get the dreaded brown boxes Remember to revert your plugins afterwards! -
with the Mac App Store version that you have installed, those two NAM folders need to be moved to ~/Library/Containers/com.aspyr.simcity4.appstore/Data/Documents/SimCity 4/Plugins. Read that post again and do as it says. The files are not in the right place. It would work perfectly for you if you just went and moved the files as I have said. In no way is that over any limit, otherwise 32.1 would be no use to any of us Mac users.
-
Since you're using the Mac App Store version of SimCity 4 the location of the "Plugins" folder has been changed. Move the NAM folders into the proper directory for your installation, as per the instructions below. We can't say it enough; no matter how eager you are to get playing, please read the ReadMe!

If you're on a typical (out-of-the-box) Mac you should just be able to double click the .zip file and let the "Archive Utility" do its work. If this isn't working please let us know and I'll see if we can get you in the right direction.

Considering the original specs were for a 700Mhz machine, you should be fine. I would recommend getting it from Steam though, as it seems to be better suited for players from this forum, as it is easy to manipulate, as though it was the disc version, and it is currently $9.99, and if it won't run in OSX, you can always fall back to Bootcamp or Wineskin/Crossover. Although A Nonny Moose (among others) does not recommend procuring a copy through Steam (in part due to the 'retrofitted' DRM, where the original game did not sport any such mechanism, as well as what seems to be an altered file structure) - and especially not Origin (I concur) - if you're patient you can nab it for $4.99 on sale. My copy has worked perfectly fine, and indeed you can download the game on both PC and Mac. I hadn't tried working the previous SimCity 4 DVD Universal Binary beta but then I hadn't heard good things about it, and either way I had lost my motivation in playing. The main reason for my posting however is to share the joy of NAM 32.1, exclusively patched for the benefit of us Mac addicts, with compliments of memo, Tarkus and the NAM Team.
