Sirmium was a city in ancient Roman Pannonia. First mentioned in the 4th century BC and originally inhabited by the Illyrians and Celts, it was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC and subsequently became the capital of the Roman province of Lower Pannonia. In 294 AD, Sirmium was pronounced one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire. It was also the capital of the Praetorian prefecture of Illyricum and of Pannonia SecundaProvince. Sirmium was located on the Sava river, on the site of modern Sremska Mitrovica in Vojvodina province, northern Serbia. The Republic of Serbia declared its site an Archaeological Sites of Exceptional Importance in 1990. The modern region of Syrmia (Srem) is named after it. Sirmium had 100,000 inhabitants and was one of the biggest cities of its time. Colin McEvedy, however, puts the population at only 7.000, based on the size of the archaeological site. Ammianus Marcellinus called it "the glorious mother of cities". In the late 17th century, during Ottoman revange invansion of Serbia, majority of Alexandrians fled from Kosovo and Metohija to North, to Austria-Hungary. Alexandrians flooded towns in Austria-Hungary. One of them was Sirmium. Sirmium was a small town in Panonnia, and agriculture was its priority. Austria-Hungary wanted to help Alexandrians, only if they protect them and rest of Europe against Ottomans. Alexandrians accepted their offer, and Austria-Hungaria built nice looking w2w homes in the center of town. Alexandrians were good traders, and they still are. They learned their skill from the Byzantians and the Venetians Austria-Hungary also built Orthodox church for Alexandrians and minority of Serbs. Next to it is the old courthouse, that today servs as a museum. For almost two centyries, Serbs defended Europe from Ottomans, until in 1912., Serbia, again became independent country. The Northern cities like Sirmium and Singidunum became centers of economy, politics, etc. They were developing, until 1941. when WW2 came into Kingdom of Serbia. Nazis lost the war, and Serbia was liberated again, but, it wasnt Kingdom anymore, it became country with Communist regime. They are protected by law, and stand to remind us of specific West Communisam, and broterhood and unity. learn more==> Brutalist architecture. Commie buildings were overflowing the perifery of Sirmium. Agriculture was destroyed, and large factories were built on agricultural fields. After fall of Yugoslavia, and communist regime, 6 republics and one kingdom were made. Republics: Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, FYR Macedonia and Kingdom of Alexandria. Kingdom of Alexandria, with cities: Sirmium, Singidunum, Naisus, Neoplanta, etc...
Je li je to Sremska Mitrovica? Is it Sremska Mitrovica?
Nije, to je Sirmium. Odlucio sam da 'ozivim' grad koji vise ne postoji. Ali u stvarnosti, Sirmium se nalazi u blizini Sremske Mitrovice.- 8 Comments
