About this City Journal
Canarsie Pol, East New York: Island City – Bedroom Community (NAM36)
Cover photo: Canarsie Pier
Here's the real life East New York location for Carnarsie Pol, East New York, an undeveloped island next door to my C$$$ tourism powerhouse, Jamaica Bay, it's immediate southward city neighbour. My city mayor, Rosa Parks, has been given the responsibility for developing this natural paradise as a bedroom community, while preserving it's most beautiful natural features. The surrounding islands to the east will remain as pristine nature reserves.
Pol – Dutch · Noun · m (plural pollen, diminutive polletje n)
1. a bundle of plants, with the soil it stands on or that hangs from it
I downloaded the SimCity 4 region map for New York from this link, and used SC4Mapper to break it up into a mix of large city tiles for primary development, with neighbouring small city tiles for fine grained inter-city traffic control and commercial (C$$ and C$$$) economic growth stimulus:

I am a longtime vanilla SimCity 4 Rush Hour player, and this is my third city tile using the NAM. I love region maps of real-life locations, lots of water, and ferries, and tunnels, large (happy) sim populations, tightly packed urban neighbourhoods, using sophisticated traffic management, wealth development, and zoning techniques, from playing the vanilla game for many happy years.
While most people use television and movies for their relaxation, I do SimCity 4, instead. My TV broke a couple years ago, and it took me 6 months to notice!
I haven't even bothered to replace the TV. On the rare occasions I feel like watching video content, I binge watch science videos on YouTube, instead.
Gosh the NAM is exciting, even though the sheer number of features is tad bit intimidating at times! While I'll be using NAM36 features in Canarsie, none of the strategic economic aspects of this island economy depend on either NAM or mods. This kind of island bedroom community can be done using vanilla SimCity 4, too, as long as your region has lots of water and ferries. Having said that, a tourism based economy works much better with the NAM.
Those who have been following my previous two city journals, will know that my latest SimCity 4 project is developing a regional high commerce and C$$$ tourism based economy, fairly realistic for the real-life New York, based on exploiting (and carefully balancing) the Eternal Commuter Bug, with the explicit purpose of creating tourist traffic ... not just regular commuters.
My Canarsie city tile is a backwater piece of my regional strategy. Humble, but vital to my regional tourism-based economy. As a bedroom community, it will provide additional economic stimulus to the C$$$ ferry loops in my Jamaica Bay city tile. As the third city tile in the region with ferries, this will deliver the humble beginnings of tourist traffic in the region, not just regular commuters, and can be a beautiful residential location in it's own right, with just a few carefully chosen, well developed tourist C$$ areas.
Here's the early features I'll be building in Canarsie:
- No dirty industry (I-D), and no high tech (I-HT).
- Just a smattering of manufacturing (I-M) to attract R$ tourism, and to counterbalance the economic effects of a C$$ centred local economy.
- On the island itself, two OWR-4 ferry loops, and one Fly-swat ferry loop.
- Island power requirements met by a windfarm, as there will be no bridges to the mainland to carry power, and power lines across the water are so ugly!
- Dedicated underwater road tunnel connection to the mainland, for trucks only, to solve the sticky problem of island garbage disposal.
- The mainland portion of Canarsie will eventually purchase clean energy from neighbouring Jamaica Bay, instead of maintaining power plants.
- Three mainland road neighbour connections (eventually) to further stimulate the local economy.
- Terrain modifications to make it pretty!
This city tile will ultimately have many inter-city commuters on the eastern mainland shore, but few actual inter-city commuters to the island. The island itself will have a quiet little tourist trade, a YIMBY gradient delivering a mixture of R$, R$$ and R$$$ residential, and a sparse scattering of manufacturing (I-M) to provide jobs for the low wealth R$ sims.
While tourism will be a factor for the local economy, the island will be most essentially residential, and very pretty.
