Well, if you want to believe in the UNs ridiculous definition of multiculturalism, go ahead.

I've wanted to go to Toronto for quite a long time. I've read countless tourism books about it, I can't believe I haven't gone yet since it's only eight or nine hours away when you drive. It's a well planned and interesting city from what I've seen with plenty of attractions. It doesn't really have a citywide theme like some other Canadian cities (usually they all look very French and sometimes old-world) but I'd still love to go.

Bah, you're not counting the precentages that makes BIG difference. Toronto barley has 8 million people in the GTA, while London can be extended to about 15 million. I'd say in this war... PERCENTAGES COUNT! Giving Toronto the win ^_^. GOO CaNaDa xD.

Edit: Just found out... Toronto only has 5 million in the GTA, that was 8 million in the Golden Horseshoe giving us a better win ^_^.

I'm from Europe, but have worked in Toronto and other North American cities for years now. I'd bill it as the scandinvain city of North America, the fact that the city is clean, multicultural and work quite well: the transit, raods, etc. Overall the achitecture are not spectacular when compared to say NYC or Chicago but I believe some major projects are in the work, involving architects like Daniel Libeskind, Frank Gehry and Norman Foster. When dig deeper you'd find some nice historical architecture, but I don't think they have done much in terms of preservation.

I like living and working in Toronto, though it's not a world class tourist city. It is, however, a major finance and business centre in North America, behind NYC and probably Chicago in some aspect. Though I don't like it when people compare to NYC, when Toronto can be a unique city of its own.

well toronto doesn't match up to NYC or chicago by a long shot, i remember going there... it was ok, clean, cold city

when i got there i keept telling myself... "god the skyline is gonna be huge" and i saw it and thought...  where did it go?  i mean there was nothing there, the tower, a few buildings and that was it, a huge disapointment

then i checked the size of the buildings and saw they were under 200 m!?!?! a few were higher but only a few

the toronto skyline is way overrated

I moved to Toronto about 2 years ago from a place called Sudbury about a four hour drive north. Long story short I like living here. What I still think is funny though is how most everyone that lives here believes that there is no life outside of the city and that Barrie is the last city on the edge of civilization. The funniest part was when on the Rick Mercer Report (think Colbert Report) he got the mayor of Toronto, David Miller, to say in a Darth Vader type voice "Hi. I'm David Miller, mayor of the center of the universe!" Man I love Canadian politicians.

i just cant find any reason to like toronto, its nice and green and has big parks but so does everywhere else in canada, most people believe vancouver is way nicer, and toronto is probably the worst city in canada, its not that multicultural, many cities in the world have a far higher percentage of visible minorities, and the absolute worst thing is the smugness of the city's residents and how toronto is believed to be the center of the universe, just watch cbc for a day and notice how every newscast starts with something about southern ontario and how the rest of canada has had to watch leafs games every single weekend this year on hockey night in canada.

Toronto, hmm.. Canada... It's in Canada, thats how I feel.

Nothing more, nothing less. It's like how I feel about Manchester, it's in the UK... and Bremen being in Germany...

take care,

Eh. Toronto's okay. But I think it's a bit over rated. I mean, everyone sees it as the center of Canada, when it really isn't, they should focus more on Vancouver, Calgary and Mississauga. I mean those cities are fascinating. THEY'RE MODERN, UNLIKE TORONTO, where like 85-90% of the skyscrapers are from the 70's, 80's, late 60's, or early 90's. Trump International Hotel will modernize it, but only a bit, sure it will be pretty and tall, but more still needs to be done, Vancouver may have a smaller population, but with it's density, one day it will surpass Toronto, and I think Vancouver is a good icon to follow for Toronto, they're great at their ideas, etc. Even it's own suburb, Mississauga, the "downtown suburb" idea is fabulous, with skyscrapers/towers in a suburb?? Yeah!! And Calgary is an okay example. But then again, Calgary is working on everything, soon Edmonton and Montreal and Halifax and Niagara, and even Hamilton will be good examples, then Ottawa and Winnipeg, then Burnaby and Surrey, etc. Just you wait Toronto, things are gonna turn out not so great. Plus they get so much smog, who really wants to live in that??

---ANYWAYS thats ALL i Got to say!!--------------------

Toronto is a great city - I live in North York and it's very clean and green (compared to American cities at least)! I've heard that the 401 is the busiest freeway in North America handling more than 400,000 motorists daily!

Way overrated. The skyline is boring and the rest of the city is just average. My opinion, but I think it is shared.

I went to Toronto about 2 years ago and in my opinion Montreal and Vancouver are FAR more beautiful cities than Toronto. Toronto is a very clean city and sure you get a beautiful view from atop the CN tower, but that is really only on a clear day. In the winter all you see is dull shades of gray and white blanketing the entire city. I don't know exactly how many people here are from Western Canada, but out here it feels like we are just force fed so much **** from Toronto that it starts getting over-whelming. I for one am sick and tired of having to put up with the Leafs, Bob Cole and Harry Neale EVERY Saturday on HNIC, what is wrong with showing Habs or Sens games to the rest of Canada. People in Toronto are all very nice, but, to me, Ive always felt that Toronto, as a city, comes off as quite arrogant and smug, almost as if they are the center of the universe. Ive never quite gotten why people always find it necessary to compare Toronto to LA, NY, Tokyo, Paris, Rome, etc. because Toronto is in no way a city of that caliber.

OK, I live in toronto, and i think its nice. I also agree with a lot of people in Mississauga, it has some very nice buildings (not counting of course, the HIDEOUS Mississauga City hall). I'm sorry, but smog is not at all a problem, and all those ppl mentioning Montreal. I really like Montreal, but the air quality there is way worse. And the french drive like crazy, there's many roads where the lanes arent even marked. Also when coming back from Quebec City, I got stuck in traffic in Vieux-Port at MIDNIGHT42.gif. PLUS it was a saturday. It took us 3 hours to finally get onto the HYW 720, and get out. I went a little off topic here. I would say toronto's probplem is the fact that the TTC is SEVERLY underfunded (we NEED more subways NOW!!!), and that the Waterfront is a wasteland of abandoned industry (BUT THATS ABOUT TO CHANGE29.gif)

Also, i relly dont see why Toronto keeps competing with NYC, i mean do we really want to be like NYC (no offence i like NYC too, but its just to crowded, AND the subway is disguisting). Aother than that i love living in Toronto, and i hope the future brings more improvements!9.gif

BTW the photo here VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV is from MTL

i was just in toronto for the last couple days. we visited the university and im looking at going to school there next year =] i love how diverse the city is, and how you can here a different language almost anywhere you go. i also like how there isnt such a huge dependence on cars like in american cities. there were soooo many people either waling, or on bikes its also very clean as compared to down here.

I love Toronto, simple as that. I'm from a small town of 1000 people and the largest city nearby is 100,000 people so when I arrived here for the first time it was quite the shock. I'm still in Toronto and although I miss home I certainly will miss Toronto when I leave at the end of this month.

I love Toronto. I've lived here for 6 years about. And its honestly one of the greatest cities in the world to live. Of course my opinion is bias. But I do like it better than Montreal. For my brief 3 years in Montreal I took a lot of crap for not being able to speak French well (or at all) and because I preferred to use English and because I was Chinese. Things have probably changed since then but during that time, I really didn't enjoy Montreal all that much. Actually I preferred the small suburbs surrounding it a lot more, the people were nicer too. As for this city not having culture, that is a common misconception and for those not living here it is easy to see why. The skyscrapers and the downtown condos are all so distracting and the modern and post-modern architecture leaves something to be desired. But that's just at initial glance. If you take a closer look, you'll see a lot of Art Deco sprinkled around the city. Many buildings from the Greco-Roman revival still around at the turn of the 20th century are still around. It's a shame what they did to the ROM. But hey, there's always Union Station. And for those of you who are not here for the architecture, Toronto's art scene (as with most art scenes around the world) is quiet and contained within itself, but very much alive. I had the pleasure to meet Dale Chihuly once in Toronto (whom had connections with my art teacher) and later managed to get a personal explanation of his work at the Sandra Ainsley gallery in the Distillery District. Toronto has so many different faces and from its British Colonial origins to its post-modern architecture, its easy to miss all the small details if you just think of Toronto as that skyline from the postcard. And I'm not sure if all of you are Sim City players or are just here to discuss architecture and urbanism. But if you are, I'm sure you'll find the less than exciting factories of Etobicoke and the suburbs of North York to be just as beautiful as I do. People tend to miss that sometimes.

Which brings me to my next point. If you want to see Toronto in a way other than what a tour guide shows. Come and check out my photo memoir of Toronto coming soon. (I'm leaving for Ottawa for University soon.) I have well over 700 photos right now and I'm still working on the project. See the more subtle parts of Toronto, the older suburbs, the factories, under bridges, Edwards Gardens, and of course the Downtown core, the Distillery District, the Bloor Street Viaduct, the Danforth, and Dundas Square. It will be posted soon.

Toronto is like amazing. The only complaints I have is the Transit and how little it covers. As, it only has 3 subway lines (Bloor And Danforth And Scarbrought RT As one) . And one of them is only like 5 stations.

They really need to get more transit done.

Although, I pretty much love the city. I go there like every month as I don't live not too far away.

Done ranting?

Montréal I found dirty grey and highly overrated- lots of bars, but quantity over quality. Been there 5 or 6 times already. As for Vancouver been there once. Its high car theft rates, homeless rates and drug problems are not to be ignored.

Ok, first of all, why does the entire country of Canada HATE Toronto. I'm not even joking. All the western Canadians think we're hoarding all the money or something. In case you don't know, Toronto is in huge debt. The infrastructure is crumbling, and Steeles Avnue has been Voted the Worst Road in Ontario for the 3 rd time (by CAA). And Toronto isn't smug, or full of itself. I agree, some people are, like EXTREMELY, but youi can't possibly judge everyone by that. On a side note, toronto i quite beutiful during the winter, of course BEFORE all the snow on the side of the road turns black =P
