Just wondering how people in other countries view Toronto? What do you know about it? Do you have a good impression of it? What do you think of when you hear 'Toronto', and how often has it come up in your readings/conversations/thoughts etc. 1.gif

Well, I've never been there....
But I know they have the Skydome and the CN Tower. Also, it's Canada, so I just sort of assume it's really cold in the winter.

I think of it as being clean, and having trees and stuff. I imagine mostly bland buildings. I also know that Toronto is a fashion and movie center, but despite that, I don't think of Toronto as being a cultural center.

-When I hear Toronto I think of the Maple Leafs (BOOO!!!)
-Doesn't come up often

Well, I was in Toronto two years ago and loved it 36.gif, it's so full of life, it's a beautiful city and has a lot of things to offer, gives you the feeling that everything is beautiful, everything is where it needs to be... so safe yet exciting. I'd love to live there!!!!!! Toronto is not a well-known city in my country, but it is a tourist destination for those wanting to try the beauties of Canada (and for my schoolmates wanting to get drunk and die in the snow 22.gif ).

Forget my bad english 22.gif

Hey I live in Toronto, its a great city! Its very green, (where i live at least). My friend lives in an apartement and if you look into the distance all you can see are the tops of trees, even though there are lots of houses there

It snows in winter, everything is covered in a blanket of snow.

Its a beautiful city im glad i live here 5.gif

CN Tower is cool but i've only been up it once

Looks like not a bad place to live, it must have a better reputation than my current city of Fresno, CA. I watch Kenny vs. Spenny (TV show) every week (they film in Toronto, I think) and that is how I got exposed to it. Never been there in real life though. I have only been to BC (Surrey, Victoria, Vancouver, and Bella Coola) and Niagara Falls.

Despite the cold winters (which have unusually reaced 10 degrees celcius)  The summers can be unbearably hot.  Last year when I visited Florida the weather in Toronto waqs 42 degrees celcius and in florida it was 32 degrees celcius!  Strange, isnt it.

Beautiful, and clean, but, kinda boring. I hope the current boom gives the city a boost in terms of design.

SC4, Forevermore!

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.

Toronto is a fine city. Most Americans would be surprised to find out that T.O. is the fifth largest city in North America (after Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). It's cultural amenities are second to none and compare favourably with New York City. It is, by and large, a safe, clean multicultural city that clicks on just about all levels. I am proud that it is Canadian.

My only complaint with T.O. is that many of the citizens of this fine city are so damn self important and smug. There is a constituency in Toronto that thinks that the known world ends east of Scarberia, north of Barrie and west of London. These individuals think that Canadians outside the Golden Horseshoe have nothing to add to any national debates. They feel that all Quebecers are seperatists, all Atlantic Canadians are fishermen, collect pogey and  live in tar paper shacks and that all westerners are redneck cowboys preparing for the next lynching. This type of attitude is unhelpful for the national consciousness and fuels anger and resentment towards the center of the country.

I know the sidewalks are very wide, but on sunny days walking on a sidewalk is like fighting a war, if you dont battle, you'll fall onto the road and get run over by a streetcar18.gif

I lived in toronto for 3 years then moved and currently live in the outskirts of toronto.

When i go there i feel as if its a place where people from all walks of life meet in live in harmony. Its very peaceful and comftable city. I probably sound like a crazy yoga guy but for the sake of this conversation i concentrated on the positives. 3.gif

You know there are people from outside the GTA and within Canada who is going to dispute that Toronto is the best. I live in Mississauga and its not as vibrant as in downtown, but its peaceful and I like it. I love downtown and the skyline, but since the condo boom began in the late 1990s, there has been some boring, and downright cruel looking buildings. It make the concrete slabs of the 1960s look nice.

Ah, my favourite topic 3.gif. I love how (relatively) often Toronto comes up in discussion on ST.

I could talk for days about my beloved hometown. But I shan't. here's the Reader's Digest version:
So with regards to it being cold... Toronto has a moderate climate. We're at roughly the same latitude as Boston or Milwaukee (and significantly south of, say, Seattle.) There's 4 generally distinct seasons. Winters are cold and, if we're lucky, snowy, hovering around 0 C. Sometimes below that, sometimes above (today was around 8 C I believe). Bundle up and you'll be fine 3.gif. Spring is nice as things start to thaw. Summers are hot (and it would seem, getting hotter by the year) not uncomonly reaching into the 30s ©. Fall is also a nice season, given the outrageous amount of folliage (Toronto has been described as 3 million people living in a forest. Our landscape might very well be described by the several green river valleys flowing through the city. But that's another line of thought...)

Toronto is the cultural centre of Canada, and a major player in North America. We've got museums, movies, sports, etc. I'd be dragging on to list all the amenities. More notable, I would think, is how multicultured Toronto is. Minorities are the majority here. We've got a handful of Little Italies, a Greektown, a dozen Chinatowns, and pockets of almost every ethnicity imaginable. It's by and large a very accepting place -- I've never witnessed any racism or anything of the sort. Also, the crime rate here is very low (3.1 murders per 100,000 as compared to, say, 21 per 100,000 in Chicago.)

In a nutshell, Toronto's the only place I would ever want to live. There are so many hidden (and not so hidden) jewels in this city, that even after living here my whole life, I still have to stop every once in a while and take in the scenery.

For a fair appraisal of Toronto, you can always check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto . Or feel free to PM me on the topic.

Toronto never really comes up in discussion. Ever.
Except for when I bring it up with my friends cause it's one of the places I'd like to live and when I say

Yeah I wouldn't mind living in Toronto.
i'll be met with
..That's in Canada, right?

so not much is really known about Toronto. Some people might now ABOUT the CNN tower, but not alot of people really do unfortunatley.

It's too bad cauze Toronto's a really great city IMO.

No offense to Torontans (sp?), but I think Toronto could disappear from the face of the Earth and most people wouldn't even notice. Doesn't come up in conversation is an understatement...

That said, I've been there and can confirm that it is indeed clean and beautiful... and boring too. I also happen to know a few people from Toronto and they all seem unusually proud of their home town, which must say something for the place.

Here are a few quick facts about Toronto (the city places 3rd in a lot of things):

Canada's financial and corporate centre, a.k.a. headquarter city.

Canada's, if not North America's and the world's most multicultural city (as listed by the UN).  More than 100 languages are spoken in the city.  Also home to Canada's largest Chinese population.

The Caribana parade is the biggest single-day happening and largest Caribbean festival in North America.

The world's largest undeground shopping and pedestrian complex (PATH).

he annual Toronto International Film Festival is second only to Cannes in terms of high-profile films, stars and market activity.

Second highest transit ridership in North America, after New York.

Third largest theatre centre in the world after New York and London.

Third largest stock exchange in North America, in terms of value traded.

Fifth largest city in North America, after New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Mexico city.

Toronto's suburb of Mississauga held an international design competition for a new 52 storey condominium, which will be the city's 'signature' tower.  Here are the finalists:
