Looks like, as a download site, there's a lot of people who are willing to make available their recent downloads.  I wonder if the bottleneck in restoration efforts will  be on the re-posting side.  It's going to be a lot to do if it's only a handful of people.  Is there any idea of how many STEX files are lost?  (not even talking about forum attachments and pictures).  

Has there been any consideration given to City Journals as well?

Hard to tell. I checked Captcity's back-up and that contains over 1500 files, but he is meticulously downloading and keeping every updates/versions of these files also there is the case of the several DN/MN combos under one upload. Hundreds of uploads still, I think closer to a thousand. It's still much easier and faster than restoring the LEX where a bit more complex stuff going on (regroupping contents, creating packages, and checking and fixing stuff and checking dependencies and remaking readmes). In theory this can be much-much faster.

The preliminary unverified count is 2,386 STEX files to be restored (including Club files). Right now we've already had 393 re-uploaded.

I must say in only 4 days, just over 16% restored is superb progress.

Once the Restoration Tracker page is up and running, the roadmap will become clear of what precisely there is still to do.

Yes, we'll certainly be hoping to restore as many images from CJs as possible. Also to see if the Wayback Machine has entries saved, or if anyone made local copies.

A key consideration will be the period of void between 1 March and 16 April. Content posted during that timeframe will be the most challenging to restore, given the short timeframe it was online means it had lower exposure. We'll try our best though, and at least most authors are likely still active around the site.

Just a quick note... As mentioned when I made these avaiable to some, I did try to remove any files that were not from the STEX and/or may have been redundant. However, I did probably error on the side of caution, not wanting to remove anytning that may be needed. I'm still going through things, but feel free to let me know what might need to be altered.

I hope i can help to share and upload some missing files in the indicate period. My question is where can is see (or exicst) an overall database (files) wich files are missed and where i can upload.

While the offer to help is very much appreciated, unless you're the original creator/uploader or staff, you'll not be able to edit the uploads at this time. Once there are dedicated procedures in place for handling the restoration, I'm sure any offer of help will be considered. Thanks.

@CaptCity has it right. There will be a procedure in place once we figure it out.  

CB is coding a dynamic list (it'll update itself in real time) and it will show all STEX entries which are borked. The peeps who have volunteered will get added to a special group (maybe the Rescue Squad?) we haven't decided on a name)) and they will inherit new permissions which allow editing borked files.

Each of them will start repairing things they have on hand themselves. Then if/when we get to the point where no one with these new special powers has the needed files, we'll prolly create a Request topic (or forum?) where we'll ask for uploads.

One category which I don't recall being mentioned much will be those new files after 28 Feb, 2026. For those we cannot even see we don't have them.  

And, we really are making this up as we go.   We've never had such a severe crash and loss to deal with before.

So the above is just a generalized feeling for how this will unfold.

I think I can help a little with this. The last saved STEX file from before the incident seems to be Sao Sing SA Fix By TDT from 10 February 2026. In the Internet Archive, there is a copy of the ST homepage from 6 March 2026. From the NEWLY ADDED FILES widget on it, I put together this list of files without STEX entries:

It appears that the homepage copy from 6 March is the last one before the rehosting. That leaves a gap of 40 days until the offline date on 16 April 2026. I will see if I can piece together more from other Internet Archive pages.

This is some of the files from that gap. I have since reuploaded all my stuff from that gap. I did not upload the Paradox Museum until the other day.

Yes indeed.  But also, I had helped @Tyberius06 with some updates to NYBT items: the 599 Lexington Station subway, and the NYBT Subways.  Those were not uploaded by me though.

I think I uploaded them, as they are in a project back-up folder that I use for fixed or uploaded stuff for STEX. I think there are around 50-55-ish uploads on my end, which was updated/uploaded in the past 2 years. Plus another 45, which meant to be replacing old STEX contents as their updated version got released on Evermore (not including the SimGoober stuff, which gonna be a completely different story eventually). Wednesday and Thursday I am gonna start uploading these (that's when I have off from work).

I have all three tile sets that G.F. Jay Cosis has posted here on Simtropolis so far. However, the only one that is missing its file at this time appears to be "Oceanic Metropolis," and I do have the file for it!

I checked the STEX subcategory pages like Residential on the Internet Archive. Unfortunately, there weren’t any copies from after March 9, so we didn’t get any extra info about the blind spot between February 28 and April 16.

Unless I missed something, I don’t think there is at this time. From earlier comments, I think there is a ‘list’ being developed of what needs restored. Perhaps, once that is done, it will update itself when things are brought back...? Just guessing on that, though. We’ll need to see what CB or Cori says about it.

On my OneDrive collection, I’ve been moving things from the original to the ‘Restored’ folder as I upload things. That’s how I’ve been tracking those items that I have copies of. Although, I’m a little behind on that...

With that said, we may need something for those items uploaded after February since there is no record of them.

I've been cursing myself not catching up with the downloads since April 2024 (I am blaming @Haljackey , he was complaining about that he got too much notifactions because I also kept writing reviews on the downloaded items ), because with all my normal downloads for back-up I usually download a few of the sample images and make readme from the description page too... That would have been helpfull now...

I did the same, well, at least the Readme part. If the download did not have one, I made one from the listing. I've been doin that for years. I also started copying images, but that wasn't until more recently and not very consistently...

Yeah, good news is I've made notable progress on the live Restoration Tracker, and hope to have something to present within the next day or two.

The goal is to present what still needs restoring, and what's already been restored. The idea is it'll update in real-time, with a refresh every few minutes or so. Initially it'll be for the STEX only, but then it can be expanded to other site areas like attachments. Then too, it can be developed specifically aimed at recovering previous versions of files (and I know a number of people are concerned about those).

What the tracker won't cover is for anything we have no record of whatsoever. As @simmering found, the Internet Archive hadn't saved much if anything from March and April, so it's a bit like the ST Dark Age with missing info. For items in that time period, we can aim to manually restore as possible, but it does seem especially challenging without any record of those. Thankfully the "void" period is only about 6 weeks, so it could've been way worse.

Thanks all those who have continued to express interest in volunteering. Once the tracker is live, you'll be invited to take part however you wish to help.

Since others were very enthusiastic in the past few days and covered a bunch of those files that were on my to-do-list, I managed to upload all the files that were on my short term end (40+ files). I also updated a few other files that were not lost, but well overdue to be updated. I'll check Captcity's back up for further files in the coming days....
