This thread is intended for asking questions to receive short and simple solutions. *:read:

It is meant to be a place where it's easy to reply and quick to receive answers, instead of opening a new topic each time. For example, to ask about keyboard shortcuts, how to use a cheat command, or game versions like between a patched and unpatched game. Maybe even a post someone made for a gameplay tip.

That said, we very much encourage members to open a new topic for asking anything which might lead to a discussion, or a sequence of replies on the same subject. That way it allows people to find topics when searching for particular questions.

So long as your computer has 4GB free for SC4 after all other processes, it doesn't really matter too much. The quality of the RAM (DDR3, DDR4, etc) and your VRAM can make a small difference.

Running SC4 off a SSD is the best way to improve game performance, especially with a lot of custom content installed. The only other route is getting a new CPU with large processing cores, but that is expensive (and in my case means getting a new motherboard too).

    There's a delicate balance between pinned topics and ease of finding new and ongoing topics. When I first became a moderator, there were 10 pinned topics in General Discussion and 10 in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues. With 20 between the two forums we found that means reading every topic title to find one that might be appropriate and, for the most part, that didn't happen. Working with CB we consolidated the pinned threads in both forums and now have a mere 6 between them.

    We believe having fewer pinned topics actually makes the forums easier to peruse.

    Additionally, this Quick Question thread complicates searches and some questions turn out to not be quick which are then better off in a standalone topic of their own. For those, we then need to parse them out to make a new thread. So, our general feeling is this thread can stay, but it's also one we don't personally encourage using all the time. *;)

    I checked my Plugin Folder again and again, but nothing.

    What for a Building is it?

    Brown Boxes are ALWAYS a result of missing models (either for buildings or props). Either the necessary model does not exist in your Plugins folder, or is buried so deep in nested folder that it exceeds the maximum path length that Windows can read exceeding maximum Path Length essentially makes those files invisible to Windows.

    The colored flags essentially mean the same thing when many models are missing.

    Here's the difference between PlopAllBuildings, and PlopAllLots. The first searches out any and all Building Exemplars (regardless if there is actually a lot that uses that exemplar). In the case of the CSX Log Home, I suspect the game scanned CSX MEGA Props - Vol05, where this Building Exemplar is located. However, many items included in this (and other) Prop Packs rely on models from other content, including this exemplar. I also suspect that if you had used PlopAllLots, this would not have shown up, which would suggest you don't have any content that uses this Building Exemplar. 

    Why did Colyn do this? You would have to ask him. Unfortunately, It doesn't appear he was a member here, and was last active over in SC4D in 2013.

    If a Prop exemplar (as opposed to its model) is missing , the prop just doesn't show up in the game. There is no other visual indication that it is missing

    I have an issue with zooming. This has been going on for about a year, and I'm wondering if it's a setting that's causing it. When I use MMP trees, the zoom will lurch me closer, all of a sudden, usually causing me to mess something up. Anyone know what it is?

    For a display that runs for 7 days and costs millions of Simoleans each year for no real entertainment value, I do find them rather difficult to like.

    So yes, this will be very useful indeed. *:yes:


    Note: I've tested this with Cori and we've confirmed it works in existing cities, so no need to re-plop the Mayor's House either. *;)

    Has anybody ever created any cheats involving game time, clocks and calendars? Specifically involving cities developing while in pause mode. I may have accidentally stumbled on a way to forestall or even prevent abandonment in plopped residential. By tricking the clock, I managed to keep plopped res in town for 7 months. They usually leave in 2-3 months. Also, what is the correct way to use the "change date" cheat? I don't seem to be getting it right.

    The only time cheat I'm aware of is the WhatTimeIzIt command which changes the game's clock (when hovering over the date).

    As follows:

    WhatTimeIzIt <0-24>

    I made a patch for the 24 Hour Clock Exemplar. It doubles the in game clock speed and also doubles the three games speeds. Got tired of waiting on timed props to appear when testing. *:D 

    Ok, now that would be a funny April 1st prank to slip that into a upload. LOL. I wouldn't do it, just saying. LOL

    If you could do that in reverse(I'm talking a slow, slow, slow crawl) I'd be very interested in trying out a theory with it. I'm thinking the game has 2 clocks, and they're not in sync with each other, or with real time.

    Question 1: How should I handle using a users name that has a forward slash in it, example ja/att. The user name is going be used in a file name and I can't use the forward slash.

    Question 2: Should I always use the exact spelling of a user name, down to capitalization and lower case letters. Minus unusable symbols.

    Reason for asking: I have created a handful of files before I realized ja/att's name had lower case letters and I was using upper case.
    Example; KK-JA ATT Restricted Sign MMP.dat and KK_JA-ATT ID Check sign_restricted15-xxxxxxxx.SC4Desc

    Thanks for any advise.

    I believe the dash would be the most logical alternative.

    It would be a nice touch to have it as exact as possible, but if the file name itself looks more appealing with other capitalization then use your own discretion.

    @City_Slider

    If keyboard shortcuts exist for individual mods, those would be stated in the documentation for each. I suspect the only supported keyboard shortcuts are what the game uses though, so there likely aren't any specific to the SPAM and CAM (both which I don't use personally).

    Those are the acronyms for NAM related features

    OWR - One Way Road (used in relation to the various widths of the one-way roads the Network Widening Mod: OWR-1, OWR-3, etc.)

    SAM - Street Addon Mod (changes the Maxis streets to a variety of new surface textures) 

    RHW - Real Highway Mod (used to be Rural Highway Mod until it was expanded beyond the original two-lane components.)

    Simtropolis actually has a built-in feature where you can hover your cursor over these terms and it will tell you what they stand for. Any time you see the dotted line under a term, simply hover your cursor over the term, and it will show you the full version.

    In the screengrab below, my cursor is hovering over "SAM."

    hello. I have 2 small questions. Do subways actually travel between cities? Would that contribute to the eternal commuter glitch or is that only for ferries?

    Subways do travel between cities.

    As far as the commuter bug goes, I would check this thread out.

    Yep. Here are a couple of pics. This is in a small tile where I have Sims passing thru on their way to a bigger city.

    First they come into the tile:

    The short answer is: It can contribute. Basically anytime the Sims can enter a city tile then exit into another, and from there go to another and back to the original or from the 2nd city tile to the original city tile, then you have eternal commuters.

    It can be even more than just 3 or 4 tiles involved too. At the bottom of page one of the linked thread, I have an eternal commuter loop spanning 22 tiles. :O

    ^ At the end of the meandering pink arrow is when they start becoming counted twice. If I were to continue loading and saving each tile in sequence again and again all the way around the loop they'd get counted thrice and more if I keep up the propagation.
