This thread is intended for asking questions to receive short and simple solutions. *:read:

It is meant to be a place where it's easy to reply and quick to receive answers, instead of opening a new topic each time. For example, to ask about keyboard shortcuts, how to use a cheat command, or game versions like between a patched and unpatched game. Maybe even a post someone made for a gameplay tip.

That said, we very much encourage members to open a new topic for asking anything which might lead to a discussion, or a sequence of replies on the same subject. That way it allows people to find topics when searching for particular questions.

What's the purpose of the yellow grid in the game?

When you press G, it pops up with a 2x2 yellow square.

And, I've never understood the point of it.

Good observation and question. I've wondered this too, and I'm also not too sure whether the sub-cells represent anything or not.

Just to show this for anyone else wondering...

While pressing the G key, here's a preview pic I've snapped and annotated:

Grid Cells Preview.jpg

(Road built to show the comparative scale visually represented.)

The interesting thing is how these are within cells. One idea popped to mind how it might be tract related, but those are 4x4 and based on regular cells. So I think that dismisses tracts as being anything to do with these sub-cells, and it might just be the style of how Maxis made the overlay appear when activating the grid. Maybe the idea to make the grid more visible when toggling on and off, as opposed to having any actual in-game functionality.

Unless there is something hidden for these being significant which goes on under the hood. :uhm:

Mine doesn't. All I get are the 1x1 greenish squares. Only dif, my maps are set at sea level so you don't see the grid, on or off. Different game version, maybe? All zoning is geared for 2 wide or high, so might just be a visual guage.

Thats the Philosophy of Maxis. Even if u a playing "The Sims", "SimCity" or wut ewa... You can call up the Line in every kind of Game.

The Lines show you a Way to put in Streets, Grounds, Walls or ... what ever you need to place something "exact" at the right Place.

The Command "G" was interesting for Beginners, to make it easy to build new Zones, Grounds (Houses in The Sims) or Streets.

    Thanks for your Attention, Oliver

I thought I remembered one tract that wasn't the standard 4 x 4. Here's a list of each exemplar and their tract size setting:

^ The Land Value Simulator is set at 2 x 2. :O  So, I suspect that's what the yellow boxes represent.

Ofc, I couldn't leave it there. I modified the Land Value Sim to use 0x04 instead of 0x02 and started a new region. (It'll CTD if loading an existing city tile using that setting.)

    7010b-4031.jpg

^ Flip between the two pics and you'll see the yellow boxes are still dividing each single cell.

Also, I discovered holding down the G key makes the yellow boxes brighter with a thicker line width.

I don't know if I dreamed it or not...but I could have sworn I stumbled across a post either here or on SC4D that was a fix to allow IRM and CAM to work together...or maybe it was hopeful wishing as I understand it they aren't compatible...

If I did find it once, I cannot find it anymore.  Hopefully if it exists someone can shoot me a little blue underlined text thingy.  TIA

    Hi @Tubthumper

You may have seen references to this set (Link). There's been several questions related to this. Keep in mind the modifications only effect the items in the Base Set of the IRM, not the addons.

You may have seen this topic. It was kind of recent and wound up discussing IRM/CAM compatability.

Edit: Just had another brainstorm (since they're sitting in my Plugins *:D)... @rsc204 created CAMified sets for the IRM I-D and I-M Addons. They're attached to this post. I beeped him in case there's more information.

I would add it’s not so much that CAM and IRM don’t work together, so much as the two mods conflict. In order to retain the IRM changes, whilst keeping stats that are intended to fit CAM’s changes, you need the special ‘CAMpatible’ variant.

Indeed I went through this for the add on packs, however due to the smaller nature of those lots, it’s not as important to have special CAM versions. But they exist if anyone wants them.

Hi, apologies if this is the wrong thread.. But I want to ask if there is a mod that adds trees in the backyards of houses? Doormysh have these in his city-building series, and I think they matter a lot!

MMP's. They'll give you the most flexibility on lots.

There probably are tree mods for lots, but eventually, you'll get tired of the same ol' with them too.

I'm using the BRF Tunnel and Slope Mod and the RHW Slope Mod. Do the slope parameters that were recently introduced in the NAM conflict with either of those slope mods? Thank you in advance!

Yes, with the ones from the Real Railway.

Depending on which set you prefer, you can either delete the unwanted files, or just move the desired ones to a folder that loads last. The folders load in alphabetic order, and you can ensure one will go last by naming it z_last, or whatever, given that starts with z_. If you want to load after those, use more underscores.

Thank you. I don't want to take up too much real estate in this thread. I'd like to keep what's included in the NAM. Does this mean that I should delete the other two slope mods? Thank you again.

I keep all my slope mods, because frankly, I can't tell which one works the best. Use one, and salt the rest off into another folder outside plug-ins.

Of course! I keep all my downloads! This is how it looks now. I removed the BRF Tunnel and Slope mod because it seems to touch a lot. From what I understand, both plugins in the image below affect different things. One affects the RRW and the other affects the RHW. I took a look in SC4DataNode and I saw no overriding between the two plugins.Everything_2021-12-31_12-46-40.jpg.8571b2b5c65574ce4e5c77099040a526.jpg

Edit: I'm just trying to wrap my head around this. Forget what I said about overriding and SC4DataNode. I just removed the RHW slope mod and I added one of the .dat files from the SCRT slope mod. The SCRT slope mod affects all networks. So I want that. I want a slope mod that's going to affect all networks. But I kept the moderate RRW Tunnel and Slope Parameters as well because it's going to add slope parameters that are exclusive to the RRW. Do the RRW slope parameters replace the functions of a slope mod that affects all networks only for the RRW? Do the RRW slope parameters add on to the functions of a slope more for all networks, but only for the RRW? Does it depend on which loads first? I'm very sorry if I'm defeating the purpose of this thread. It feels like I want the RRW slope parameters .dat file because it's included in the NAM, so I'm wondering how it can be used in conjunction with an "all networks" slope mod and if it can, how it can be used in conjunction with an "all networks" slope mod.

Edit 2: Included below is a screenshot from SC4DataNode. I clicked on the SCRT slope mod's Extremely Smooth .dat file that's in my plugins folder. This looks to be exactly what I want! The SCRT slope mod's Extremely Smooth .dat file affects all networks, but the RRW Tunnel and Slope moderate parameters that are included in NAM 43 override just the rail parameters of the SCRT .dat file! Eureka! And I take it that this happens because the RRW Tunnel and Slope moderate parameters .dat file loads after the SCRT slope mod .dat file because it comes after in alphabetical order! I was trying so hard to figure all this out and I was really working my brain/mind.

Hi, I came back to SC4 after 12 years. I have 2 questions.

    1. Custom songs mode does not play all songs that I put in a folder Region/Mayor *mp3*

    2. is any  tool for planting default trees as in god mode in City? Planting individual trees in a city is a really hardcore.

    Two options for this...

First is to hold Ctrl-Alt-Shift and hit the God Mode button.  That allows you to enter pre-city God Mode (including seeding forests)

Second is to install the God-Mode in Mayor-Mode mod, which has all the God-Mode options available in mayor mode

If you don't get an answer in this thread, you might want to re-post your question in Comprehensive SimCity Music Collection, Version 3.1 as there are likely more peeps following that thread who know about setting up custom music.

I've been following @Indiana Joe's excellent Indiana Joe and the Quest for the Perfect Plugins Folder found here:

I've been following the second post in the thread so that I can start to build my plugins directory. After getting "The SPAM mod and any SPAM-conforming content" under "Agricultural," the vanilla water utilities are nowhere to be found! They've been replaced with Mountain Theme Pack variants of the vanilla water utilities. Is this normal? If it is, I would please like to ask for a brief explanation as to why it's normal because I'm certain that it applies to many aspects of SimCity 4 modding. Thank you!

While I'm unfamiliar with using the MTP in recent times (though I'd like to explore it in greater detail someday), I believe this is due to an override taking place. It's possible the SPAM / MTP is designed in such a way that it directly replaces some of the vanilla items (like the water utilities). If so, the reason for this occurring would be if IDs identically match with the standard Maxis items, which would then cause the override to occur in game.

We might need to wait for someone who's avidly familiar with this though, to confirm whether it's expected behaviour or not.

A handy tool is DataNode, which can view loading order and also highlighting these matching TGIs.

Thank you so much! I had thought that it was due to an override taking place, but I didn't want to use that word because I wasn't certain if I was going to use it correctly. You put it into more detail, though, telling me what happens when IDs match the Maxis items.

I suspect it might be the shadow from air pollution. Afaik, water pollution only shows in normal view mode on the water itself even when present in land areas.

Check the various data views, but especially air pollution.

Thank you!

Hey Turnstyled, glad you've gotten some use out of my guide.  I haven't had your problem with the regular SPAM mod, so I think it probably came from one of the SPAM add-on content packs.  Specifically this is the link I have in the post.  I may have to go back and edit that out, as some of the plugins in that section are probably not what the average user wants.  For example, one of them even overrides the NAMPEG plugins are kind of unique, in that many files are incompatible with other major mods (they were geared toward making the entire game agricultural/rural.)

I couldn't find reference to any water utilities other than maybe this one.  You can also try the "binary search" method---remove half of your PEG Productions folders; load the game and see if the problem is fixed.  If it's not that half, it's in the other half.  Keep splitting it down until you narrow down which file is causing the problem.

@Indiana Joe I tried the binary search method. Well, before I did that, I deleted the SPAM Irrigation Canals. I intentionally left the MTP Super Pack and the MTP Water Utilities for last. It was the MTP Water Utilities that was causing this behavior.

Edit: I'm going to remove all MTP growables from my plugins directory because MTP-style cities aren't what I want.

Fun fact: Buffalo sauce contains the entire DNA sequence of buffalo, so you can clone buffalo while eating buffalo wings with buffalo sauce at Buffalo Wild Wings in Buffalo, New York. I've never tried it, though.
