since we're on the topic any suggestions for some small parks with not too many dependencies?

Moderator notice:

whilst these days we're much more relaxed about reopening old threads, I just feel in light of the fact that being 12 years without a reply and at best only vaguely on subject, in this case we should split these newer posts into a new thread..

If you use the LotEditor, you can make any kind of park you want with 0 dependencies. In fact, parks are the easiest way to learn to use LE. Then you can move on up to graveyards.

I still enjoy the BSC Parks, with the choice of path textures. The parks can be lined up and connected as you please, and there is a solid variety. If you already have any custom lots in your plugins, then you likely already have most (if not all of) the dependencies, as they are fairly common even still. If not, then it's 5 dependencies used for nearly 30 total lots in the base pack.

Well, part of it is: what kind of park do you want? Big swaths of green lawn park? Intricate gardens with many paths to get lost down? ALL the playground equipment to make a kid's paradise? A large sports center park with many kinds of facilities? A small fill in plaza style park? A pristine green dream? An abandoned lot in a poor area that people have put a few benches & a basketball hoop in? Some large statuary? Some small statuary? A park that'll look right in Industrial areas? If you answer this question, we can point you in the direction of specifics easier.

I'm not sure off the top of my head how many dependencies there are (Edit: after looking, they definitely take some dependencies, but they are well worth getting (plus some of them are common dependencies you'll probably end up using later.)), but @paeng's parks have long been my favorite because you can just do so MUCH with them, and they just look SO GOOD. Need a small fill in park? Take a 1x1 end section w/ a fountain & benches or a place to play chess and stick it in there. Need something to fill in around some civic buildings? Use 'em like paths. Want to really explore the sets & make a giant regional park? There's a million different ways you can do it with Paeng's parks.

One of the only drawbacks with this is it very much fills up your parks menu, but if you don't have that many others, it's not a big deal, and if it starts to be (and you're running on Windows) you can use the DAMN.

I went and tagged all of Paeng's Parks "PaengPark" for ease of finding: https://community.simtropolis.com/tags/paengpark/

Fwiw, my favorites of the Paeng parks are the yellow path parks, because they're so colorful and sunny.

although I also use the Paeng's Parks Revisited on a regular basis. (The Playgrounds integrate well too, and they're fun.)

I also very much recommend getting the following to work with them:

I had hesitated for years to get this because I didn't quite understand. Once I got it, I wish all files used it. Basically, when you're plopping it, it makes it clear which direction the path is facing so you can put it in the right way. (It's REALLY useful for T & L shaped path pieces.) It doesn't really show up once it's plopped. (The file says "january 1st" but I've never noticed it.)

All that being said, here's a few other favorites:

It's beautiful but doesn't exactly match the other parks above.

is a unique shape & breaks things up nicely.

goes in many of my industrial districts (and in other places where I need a 1x6 fill-in)

is great for where you don't have room for a full basketball court (but isn't very slope friendly).

is like a swim club (which doesn't seem to have dependencies), while the following are great community pools (that require some basic dependencies that are used often).

I have this large sports center:

(In general, @dc6470's files don't require dependencies, and while they are a bit limited due to that, they do have some decent parks.)

Finally,

is just colorful & fun, if not a bit off, scale wise. :)
