Joining the Simtropolis Discord Chat

What is Discord?

Discord is a free to use service which provides live text and voice chat for gamers and non-gamers alike.

With just a few simple steps, all Simtropolis members can join our live Discord chat and gain access to private channels for Cities: Skylines, SimCity 4, SimCity 2013 and general chatter.

 

Prerequisites

To join our Discord chat, you will first need to have a verified Discord account. You can sign up for a Discord account (it's free!) here.
Once you've registered with Discord, you will receive an email with a link to verify your account. Simply click this link, and your Discord account is now verified.

One security measure we have in place is that any Discord account joining our chat must be at least 5 minutes old, so if you've just signed up to Discord you will need to wait 5 minutes before you'll be allowed to join. After this period, you're all ready to join the Simtropolis Discord!

 

Joining the Simtropolis Discord

1. Join the Simtropolis Discord chat here.

If you're logged into Discord already, you will be able to join straight away. Otherwise, you can enter your Discord account details first (note: these are your Discord account details, and not your Simtropolis account details!).

 

2. As Discord is separate from Simtropolis, you will need to link your accounts to gain access to the private Simtropolis chat channels.

This step is pretty simple, and it simply involves clicking "Sign in with Discord" in your account settings.

Once the accounts have been linked, it can take a few minutes for your Discord account to gain access to the private Simtropolis chat channels. To speed this process up, you can force an update by clicking "Synchronize Now" here (this button will only show once your Discord account has been linked).

 

Unable to Join Discord?

Currently all new members may not access the Simtropolis Discord immediately upon registration. This is due to extensive unsuitable activity which caused widespread disruption to other chatters. We encourage anyone who wishes to join our Discord server to first contribute by actively participating in forum discussions.

Can't join.  There is over 40 other people who are unconfirmed.   Why does this have to be so difficult?

I've moved your account from New Member to regular Member. This should resolve the problem of syncing your ST account with our Discord server.

It's an unfortunate security measure we've had to take due to to some invasive activity which was completely disrupting the chat.

I don't use Discord myself, but I believe the Simtropolis Chat is text-based only.

Others who venture there I'm sure can confirm this through. Certainly I'm aware how microphones or cameras are no requirement for participating in the chat channels, and I'd imagine other options for communication are only possible between individual users (with their permission).

But i'm now in there and not confirmed Cyclone. Should i "hang around" until somebody confirms me now, if you know, or what to do next? I'm among those there now but not there.

Checking your profile record in the database, and I see no Discord ID or token associated with your account. I suspect you'll still need to perform the synchronization as explained in the above guide. The crucial step is on the settings page to connect your profile there, and then it should grant access to the main Discord chat channels.

Additionally there's this guide which explains the same process in a slightly different way.

Still it´s at status "unconfirmed".

And also i get this when trying to type something in the message box in the SimCity channel:

"Your message could not be delivered because you don't share a server with the recipient or you disabled direct messages on your shared server, recipient is only accepting direct messages from friends, or you were blocked by the recipient".

Well i tried to do it just now. But if i had to verify it before and do some action that now is something that´s not up to date and have to be repeated i can´t remember if that´s what you mean.

Samerton are you in and can you explain the procedure perhaps or what´s at fault here.

I see no reason for the program to stop me here now. All set.

Hi! I can't join the Discord chat either. I have an old account on Simtropolis (from 2011) but I'm only trying to use it now. Same for Discord, though a tad more recent (created earlier this year 2019). Anyone could help me please? Thank you!

Hi @Samerton,  

Actually, there are two messages on the Discord page, which are the following ones: "Simtropolis members only open discussion" and "You don't have the permission to send messages in this chatroom". I can't see any message and I can't send any message myself either.

I must add that my nickname on Simtropolis (Simtropolis_2.0) is different from the one on Discord (Ganymedon).

I clicked on the invitation sent by Dirktator , and I used my own Discord account instead of creating a new one.

If this connection has already been made, there will be a "Synchronise now" button, which will hopefully update your Discord access.

It's odd why this happened, and maybe something got updated. While I don't use Discord myself, I noticed this was broken on the forums sidebar a while ago and corrected it to the alternate one listed. The broken invite link was still lingering in the thread here though, so good catch and thanks for letting us know!

I have to agree artwelve, this seems more complicated than it should be.  I click on the Account Settings-> Discord and there is no "Synchronize Now" button, only a button to take me to discord.  Do I have to be signed it to Discord on the web browser too, can't I not do this with the stand alone app?

We'll have to call @Samerton or @RipRap as the Discord expert on staff to confirm, but I believe yes that signing in via your browser will indeed be required to perform the syncing operation. That way it can communicate with their server and also assign an ID and token to your ST account.

As with a lot of Discord verification these days, yes, you need to sign in to the web Discord in order to authorize your Simtropolis account first. Just make sure that you have the right account connected and you should be all set. It is a little complicated since you need to connect it to your Simtropolis account but that's how it's done for security reasons.
