I have always wonderd if anybody else has ever noticed that the Rotate function in SimCity 4 Deluxe is reversed?  My SC4 install is on a Windows 7 machine.  When I hover over the rotate map arrow on the left, the pop up says 'clockwise' and the arrow does show the clockwise direction.  When I click on it, the map rotates counterclockwise.  When I hover over the rotate map arrow on the right, the pop up says 'counterclockwise' and the arrow does show the counterclockwise direction.  When I click on it, the map rotates clockwise.

As far as I can remember, my SC4 has always done this.  Even when I had it installed on my XP desktop.  Just curious, is this common knowledge? Has anybody else noticed this on their game?

I know it's not a big deal, and I have adjusted to this idiosyncrasy, but sometimes it bothers my sense of engineering logic.  At least the zoom +/- works correctly. *;)

I wonder what other idiosyncrasies people have noticed.?

I'm playing SC4 on XP and it does the same thing. This is odd behavior compared to The Sims. In that series the directions are what you would expect. For SC4 I just pretend it's me who is rotating my view rather than being able to move the world.

IDK, maybe that's what the original programmers were thinking when they wrote that code.  Still doesn't seem logical to me *:P

Yup, some games move worlds, and other games move cameras.

noticed it too long time ago, but toughed it out and survived. Had much more problems with the rotate-lot function (on my mac keyboard) as it is not the one used in the L.E. to rotate props ! *:ohyes:

I use the Page-Up and Page-Down keys, which are arbitrary anyway, so forward and backward don't much matter to me. Likewise the Home and End keys for rotating lots.

Hm, strange indeed. I just tried myself, and it works as it should. The clockwise arrow (the left one in the UI) says "clockwise" and rotates clockwise, and it's the same for ccw.

Maybe it's a question of perception? If I imagine the city map as the face of the clock which remains static and the camera as the hand of the clock that moves from the 6 o'clock position to 9 o'clock, 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock and again, then everything indeed behaves as expected. (Imagine the hands of the clock moving a good distance above the face, and the camera hung below the tip of the hand, pointing downwards at an angle and inwards, towards the centre of rotation - dunno if this image actually helps or makes it even more confusing.)

    Okay, I have pictures now.

In this first picture, notice the direction indicator (arrow 1) is pointing "up" or "north" or whatever you want to call it.  If you imagine that you are looking at a clock, the direction is indicating 12:00.  You also notice that I am about to click the left rotate arrow, aka the 'rotate clockwise' arrow (arrow 2).

    5aa19f2239a84_Rotate1.JPG.aeab02683b4bfff321628378e1281862.JPG

I would expect that the direction indicator would rotate clockwise and  would end up pointing to the right, or the 3:00 position.  So I click the left rotate (clockwise) arrow and here is what I get.

    5aa19ffdce83c_Rotate2.JPG.2dfddaf6e2adab63d6aa070a07c5ad8e.JPG

You see after the rotation occurs, the the direction indicator ends up rotating left (counterclockwise) and ends up in the 9:00 position.

Now you can't tell me that is not messed up.

Let me test your hypothesis: That is not messed up. *:P

You, the viewer, turned clockwise and are now facing the 3:00 position and north is now to your left. (Tho it would make more sense to have the world move like it does in other games.)

So I guess when SC4 rotates, it is rotating you, and not the map.  I guess I would prefer that the map would rotate (I like to sit still *;) ).

I always use the Page Up and Page Down keys to rotate, but as they are in opposite sides of the direction keys (UDLR) I thought they matched the orientation of the buttons in the UI. I will have to test this when I get back in game (it's been months) because I never remember this being an issue before. Page up being on the left side of the arrow keys always rotated clockwise (which is what I expected) so I've never noticed a problem, either on my current laptop or on my old one, which had the keys arranged in a vertical line along the right side.

    Very peculiar!
