Maxis Screwpile Files Gone!?

I recently reinstalled sc4 and found out that the previous link where I got my Maxis files at https://screwpiledevelopments.com/screw-pile-exchange-spex/maxis-files/ has been taken away? Whenever I click on the links for something such as "Buildings as Props" etc it takes me to a dropbox page stating the files aren't there anymore. Anyone know what the deal is or where I can find these files?

This is likely because Dropbox have recently (last week) made a change to Public Folders, meaning existing contained files are now automatically private. So to make them accessible again, they'd need to be manually re-shared. Rather inconvenient to say the least...

To get these fixed up, it might be worth contacting @Craig-Abcvs who I believe owns the Screwpile site.

As another mirror, we can consider hosting the files locally here at ST, linked from the Maxis Files page.

And it so happens I have every single Maxis file that was on Screwpile saved in a folder. When I initially found that site I grabbed it all cause I'm well aware how ephemeral the web is.

Seeing as the published patches are already hosted here, I suppose the only consideration is bandwidth & storage. This is again something I'll have to run by Dirk. The legalities are not an issue, as like other sites have done, EA did grant permission for the files to be redistributed, providing they're not modified or sold.

Having another online repository can never be a bad thing. It all helps with making them more accessible.

For added convenience, I'm thinking the additional landmarks could be bundled together and also offered separately. Then they'd be either downloadable at once in a single zip, or you could choose whichever ones you'd like.

I suppose should bandwidth be a concern, they could always be hosted off-site like Screwpile did.

What would be the total file size of the collection? I've checked my Maxis files backup and excluding the patches, it adds up to 65MB. I don't know whether this is a complete set though, as these were downloaded a while ago. Some have also been unzipped from their original archives, so not exactly sure what goes where.

Sadly the policy change by Dropbox is affecting all files including images. For example as explained, @SimCoug had images hosted there, and this means the old public links will no longer work. Even with new ones, it's understandably very time-consuming to manually fix with so many images scattered around the site.

That's the thing with any online storage including cloud services -- they're temperamental and never assured (especially free ones). Unless physically hosting a local server, a third party is always ultimately in control over the fate of your files. Not to mention security and privacy.

I'd only downloaded from screwpile what was interesting, so my own collection is incomplete - but it sounds like we are covered.

From memory Craig got the files from me, but I could be wrong there its been a few years since he set it up, I hold everything as it was on the Maxis site including any notes that were on the website, am at work so can't tell you the total size of the CBEX folder, but if you guys want to have them on the STEX I can zip up the folder and pass it on.

There's no rush, but if not too much trouble that would be a big help. I can compare both of your sets and ensure any gaps are covered.

In case I'm not online for a STEX upload, I think the easiest way would be to send me a PM attaching the zip. I've given you both a temporary raise of site attachment quota, so there should now be more than enough in addition to any existing files. I can then delete them from the server once downloaded.

Or maybe upload & link to a viable external host. Whenever's convenient and what works best.

Well, the initial idear by Tim Berners Lee - the Hyperlink - was to link knowledge to each other, so basically there was no need of 'search engines' in this initial idear - as you can see it still on wikipedia where knowledge is linked in this way so with every article you have the necessary knowledge linked (to other articles/knowledge and when on wikipedia you rarely will need google to find the corresponding knowledge).

Now what all this 'services' did -the commercialisation, and some may remember that in the early days all this services were handeled by universities and thus by public authority and not by corporations - is a fundamental re-evaluation of 'links'. Today links are some sort of currency or maybe the 'gold' of the web and for many links you have to pay with real money, for other links you have to register with your private data - for other links you have to become slave to google. Who controls data controls links controls knowledge.

So mostly - all the data is there on the web - it's only the links becoming dead. That's an effect when knowledge becomes subject to bargain. You just move the data from x to y. All the links get broken. All the world yells: where is data? Now look how mighty the one becomes who can sell you the link (not the data!). Pay me - and I give you the link.

That's how the whole web did change - on links there is a 'silent' brokering fee. It's a technique very similar to asset backed securities (where you trade with money that doesn't exist but you know from where to get it - you trade with a promise). You know the technique that caused the world wide financial crisis in 2007. And I forsee a similar crisis to data/knowledge: a web full of data and no valid links to retrieve it. The links like debts never to be cleared.

Unfortunately my folder of Maxis files is too big ... I've got 55 zipped files totaling 294.1 MB and zipped again down to one file its still 293.8 MB so I'm currently uploading it to dropbox

Heading off to bed now its finished uploading to dropbox and I can pass a link to Cyclone Boom, I've got everything that used to be on the official sites (including a map that was only available to Japanese players) plus some MAC files not sure just were they came from, but I've passed them over.

I'd like to know if anyone can access them easily with the link as Its a good test for me to use One Drive for large files.  In future I'm planning to upload SC4 Regions complete with city files.

The updates should have been included in the GOG file, the landmarks won't have been, much as I appreciate RandyE enthusiasm provided a zipped file without documenting its contents or providing a readme and in the case of the Maxis files the EA Disclaimer notice can cause more problems than it fixes, you can if you are in a hurry go and download the files you actually want from here

Each file once you unzip it, is a .EXE file and it will install the files in the correct location if you have a windows computer, if you don't mind waiting Simtropolis is going to be uploading them into the existing Maxis folder and will be doing away with the .EXE.

If you do set up an account over at CB and want to download the files you actually want as one bulk zip, just bookmark each file then go to the bookmark menu and download them as a single zip.

There is a reason no one does this unless the city has no custom content in it at all, it simply doesn't work ... you would either have to provide the custom content that you had used while making the city and the file size doesn't bear thinking about, and that's alway assuming you can get permission to include the plugins you had used, or you would have to provide cleanitol lists so people could check they had the plugins either way it would be a logistical nightmare.

I included the disclaimer in a readme.txt file in minimal form, and the region with city files I have planned would be absent of user created content other than my own.  Thanks again @catty-cb for clarity on those points.

EDIT:

To add another important point, in accessing files from any location one must consider what information is required by the provider in order to download.   MS One Drive is sufficiently secure on the client side for the downloader, but I did find an apparent flaw in the security on the server side by which information not intended to be may be accessed.

Thanks.  MS has its stuff so deeply integrated with the local computer it requires this kind of test to ensure integrity of detachment of remote networks.

For those who are following this issue, I just popped onto the Screwpile website.  As of 26 March, the links are in the process of being updated.  All the links in the Dependencies section are good to go.
