Hi guys! First post. Does anyone know of a mod that provides at least semi realistic airports? I am not interested in building a airport with a tiny runway barely large enough for commuter props to have A380S LANDING ON IT!

This topic has some good links to airport mods:

Edit: All the good airport mods are modular, which means you will get lots of different small airport parts that you use to put together into a larger airport. Making a good large airport with those parts will take a bit of time, but it can be done. This other topic shows you how in the first post,

It's an easy mistake for anyone to make. Xyloxadoria was only trying to be helpful. ;)

For Cities Skylines, all you need is the default airport, or some custom terminals if you want, and then the Airport Road mod, which allows you to draw the runways and taxiways. For terminals, search for BaskB on the steam workshop. And for other nifty assets such as control towers or fuel depot then just go to the steam workshop, airport category and order by most popular. You should then get a range of high quality assets for your airport.

The only functional airport are the default ones. If you extended the runways in the default buildings then the planes will still only land on the original strip.

Any player made airport SHOULD work however planes will only take off and land on the initial strip.

Look for modular airport kits on the Steam workshop otherwise. There are plenty of good ones.

Unfortunately it seems that not only did this thread get off to a bad start,  but that some quite frankly not so good advice has been given :uhm:

First of all, the Runways and Taxiways mod is severely deprecated, and doesn't play nice with a number of other mods out there. Like michae95l already said, use Airport Roads instead.

Second, custom-made airports built with this mod will absolutely function like the normal, in-game ones. Don't forget you need to connect the runways/taxiways with a workshop asset Airport Terminal/Cargo building and provide for taxiways going in and out of the platforms/aprons though! I'd have liked to be able to link some right now, but the workshop is down for me at the moment.

Third, the take-off/landing lengths for aircraft can be tweaked with the Advanced Vehicle Options mod through its acceleration and brake settings. Play around with these for a bit to see how far you can go without planes bumping into each other all the time. You can definitely get planes to use long strips of runways by doing this!

Here's an example of a fully functioning airport built with custom assets and mods only (regrettably this city's saves have become corrupted for me so no brand-new screenies for you :():

To reiterate and add to this:

You can use the Airport Roads mod to build custom runways and taxiways. It can be found here:

    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=465127441

You can build a working terminal without attached runways and taxiways, one of which you can find here:

    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=499748303

There are other terminals, but not many. I just use that one.

When you build these correctly, they will work just as the default airports do. HOWEVER, you must also use the One-Way Street Arrows mod so you can see what direction your runways and taxiways are going. When building the airport runways/taxiways, their directions go from the origin points to the end points, and when built, should form a one direction loop whose taxiway portion runs through the terminal's taxiway connectors. You can find the arrows mod here:

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=420500168

(Unfortunately, that mod's page seems to be down. Unsure why, but maybe if you search for it on the workshop, you can sub scribe from there.)

ALSO, contrary to what Linoa said, you CAN build multiple intersecting runways. However, you must be careful how you build them. Planes generally use the terminals closest to the runways, so placing two runways parallel may not work for the runway furthest from the terminal, but runways in different directions and all located next to their own terminals will generally work, thought it takes time for planes to start using all of them. You can use as many terminals as you want connected to one or more runways. IMPORTANT, too, is that when making intersecting runways, make sure they only intersect near their ends, with taxiways located near those points. Otherwise, planes will come in and suddenly swoop around onto the next runway, even mid-air, if the intersecting runway is near the middle and there's no taxiway before it. Planes use the first available taxiway to exit the runways.

Here are a few of my custom airports:

I'm unable to make runway or airport works.

Runway have no plane up or down. Airport have no tourist I think it is not functioning.
Are there any guide how to build these and make it works?20160913185252_1.jpg

Most of what was said in the last posts is still correct. You seem to be using the correct mods to make it function.  Some of the old standalone terminals don't work anymore after the last game updates. I know that this modular terminal works fine, as does this airport. One other thing: make sure you don't build any runways or taxiways below air paths, as the air paths have the tendency to disrupt the starting and landing animation. Use More Network Stuff to see whether this is the case,

Already thinking about a future project and wondering if it's technically possible.

There are lots of large scale airports in the game with the custom airport roads, these are great for the international flights but what about small rural airfields?

I have noticed there is paths available in the asset editor for taxiways and runways, will it be possible to make a grass/dirt airstrip? I don't think a modular one using the airport roads mod will be possible but a fixed strip and small terminal/hanger should be easy to create.

I know with train stations and harbours you have the option to make them local only. Do you have the same option for airports when creating the asset? You could set up a small dirt strip, add a plane route from there to your main airport terminal and just assign small aircraft like a Cessna to that plane route. I've already done this with cargo terminals and selected local only when plopping a plane stand and assigned DHL/Fedex planes to a route.
