Hey guys I just saw that as of today, Paradox started a public modeling contest! You can find the contest here.

From PI forums:

Greetings Chirpies!

As most of us are leaving on summer vacation the coming week(s) we figured it was a good idea to give you something to play with until we're back in action come August. I had a sit down with Jonathan (Azurespecter) and he suggested we'd host a competition for our awesome asset creators - so here we are - doing just that. With no further ado I present to you...

The Extravagant Large-Sized Monument And Or Statue Contest
Or, for short, The Extremely Monumental Production Task Eloquently Delivered - TEMPTED.

sjt4IXP.jpg

The goal of this competition is to create a city monument that is the World's Biggest of something. These type of monuments serve as tourist attractions and bragging rights for cities. Be creative, because you certainly wouldn't want another modeller to make the same thing, but bigger, than yours!

For example...
World's Biggest Buffalo
World's Largest Shuttlecock
World's Tallest Rollercoaster

Prizes
Our most gracious and sincere thanks to Webhallen.com for supplying us with this hardware.

1st place:

2nd place:
Razer Firefly mousepad (yes that's a backlit mousepad, it's ridiculous)

3rd place:

PLEASE READ THE RULES CAREFULLY!
  1. Model must be under 4,000 tris, LOD under 200
  2. You may advertise your model, but spamming any community or forum is not acceptable. Getting removed/disciplined for spam on a 3rd party site may lead to judges invalidating your entry.
  3. No obscene or graphic models. Keep it clean!
  4. You are allowed to participate with as many models as you wish (they will be judged individually).
  5. Your entry MUST be tagged with #TEMPTED in the Steam Workshop TITLE to be eligible.
  6. If we (Paradox) suspect vote manipulation we maintain the rights to disqualify entries.
  7. Winners must be able to supply us with their home address & shipping location within a week of finishing the contest.
  8. Your model MUST BE in the unique building category. It does not need to hold any particular gameplay functionality or values, nor does doing so disqualify it.
  9. Models uploaded to the Workshop prior to 00:01 July 16th GMT+2 will be disqualified.
  10. Your building may NOT portray or copy anything that is currently trademarked or under copyright, meaning no brands that aren't Paradox affiliated (unless you are able to display that brand owner's written permission).

The contest will run in two stages.

Stage one: Production
This starts July 2nd and ends July 15th. We have opted to give everyone participating the same shot at producing something of great quality and not reward only the fastest asset creators.
During this time you are not allowed to upload your asset on the Steam workshop or any third party site. Users are allowed to talk about their creations, share images and discuss progress.

Stage two: Workshop voting
Running from 00:00 the night between July 15-16 GMT+2/CEST to midnight on July 22nd (so it ends as us Swedes pass into the 23rd). This is the part where your model will be judged by the public. Popularity is valued by the amount of subscriptions you have at the end date of stage two.
There will be a contest thread on Paradoxplaza where you are allowed to post your workshop entry once to spread the word.

The top three most subscribed participating assets will be crowned winners.

#TEMPTED will be moderated and managed by Jonathan/Azurespecter as I'm on vacation.

That's it! Go! Be creative! We're really looking forward to seeing your results!

Cheers,
The Skylines Team

Models uploaded to the Workshop prior to 00:01 July 16th GMT+2 will be disqualified.

Doesn't this mean anything uploaded before the end of the competition will be disqualified?

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

No, the competition is between July 16 and 22 and need to be uploaded between tjose dates to qualify.

But good luck, there are too many established asset creators with thousands of followers.  Only the elite 1% will win as they have too many followers that will subscribe automatically no matter if it's good or bad.  kind of fixed if you ask me.  We just get to watch I guess.  Gula could probably win first, second, and third place by himself.  He has good assets and over ten thousand followers.

But I guess it's good for CO to keep them modders working on the game for them.

so true.. I just started and have 38 followers. My most subscribed asset is around 3k and took almost 1 week to reach it. They aren't bad at all, one of my asset is Gula's favorite. Well.. Gula, Drosovila and Zed surpass these 3k in the first hour.

Well... Gula surpasses all of us... together !

I don't even manage to understand the number of upvotes he has on some of his stuff. :D

This. He is highly overrated if you ask me. Especially his real world models are ridiculously inaccurate. For a skyscraper lover like me it's a pain to look at his Kingdom Tower. But I don't want to rant any further, I'm probably just too much of a perfectionist, the average C:S player won't give a damn about accuracy.

I don't use several of his buildings because the floor height is completely off. I think I'm not too picky (cannot really be as I don't make anything myself), but to each his own. Fortunately, we have some excellent building producers here :).

I wish they would have come up with a subject that might add a little more depth to the game long term. I know the "worlds biggest" is all in good fun, but I don't think the laughter of plopping down a few route 66 attractions will last very long before they just become eye sores. Kind of like the real ones, right?

I agree with you, but this is probably only the first out of many contests to come and we will hopefully see some more interesting themes then :) I can't speak for other modelers but my entry will have a lot of longterm value IMHO. Something you can use in many places and cities :)

    Reminds me of something... :ducky:

    What would that be..? :???:

    Thanks :)

What I like in this contest is how much stuff here were actually made on purpose for CSL (well it didn't have to but... what's the point then ???) and how much stuff made it to CSL's workshop... and how the public vote worked (the first places were quite ok... but some of the others... ughhh) ;)

How is it going for you guys i'm not going to post what I'm making just yet but maybe towards the middle of next week.

My model is at 1,989 polys the base model is almost done maybe 200 or 300 more polys for the base then the rest will be details.

(The things in the jars are textured and the jar are what I want them to look like in-game these jars have some thing to do with the bigger item.)

It would be nice to have a panel of sorts judge the models instead of it being based on subscription numbers. Like has been mentioned higher up in this thread, no-name Joe could model a masterpiece, but if he has no workshop followers or isn't good at marketing himself, that masterpiece won't gain any recognition. It's all well and good to have the public judge a model, but when the winner is based off subscription numbers, being a newbie in this competition pretty much puts you out of it before you even start. Azurespecter...can future competitions be judged in some other way? (I wish you could tag users!)

It wouldn't even be hard to make the vote about fair... if for example Paradox promoted the contest a lot on Steam and made a site (in the workshop) that lists all entries. This way everyone browsing the workshop would at least have a clear overview of all models.

I too was thinking about trying this competition but after 60 seconds of thinking what I would do and how the winners would be determined it was pretty much fact I wouldn't have a chance.  The way the Steam votes and followers have been working seem to have benefitted anyone who created assets the first 2-3 weeks of launch.  Outside of that everyone else has significant exposure disadvantages that just don't make it worth it when it comes to dictating this context by votes on steam.

As others have said here and I have witnessed first hand with your creations, there are those with AWESOME creations and just no one there to really see them unless you go searching (as I have).  Anyways, preaching to the choir at this point but want to chime in as well at the slightly disappointed way that system has been working.

There's only 1 maybe 2 #TEMPTED assets on the shop right now, so either people are doing this "auction style" and uploading later and last minute or it just doesn't have a ton of interest perhaps.  I guess there's a bunch of time still left so might be just a bit slow for people to finalize their creations yet....I know what you mean by that DP guy too - I was one who thought they were mostly different custom models until I found they were the same with just standard props arranged.

How many people are actually working on a model for this? I've only seen like 2 WIP post.

I think most people will not talk about their participation until the voting starts. Personally I finished my base model and still have to do some textures + LOD. I will probably reveal my work in 3 days.

Eh, there should be actually none of them in the workshop at this time. Anything uploaded prior to July 16, 00:01 AM is excluded from the contest as it says in the announcement:

But I guess it's good for CO to keep them modders working on the game for them.

Gula does win the first, second and third place everytime he releases an asset. Just look at his patreon page. If instead, for example, 10 modders and asset creators received 60 bucks per asset, we would see sooo much more quality content. I don't dislike him and he makes some of the best assets, but IMO he's overrated and overpaid. Nlight for example made some great mods and launched a patreon too but only got to 25 bucks per month.

About the followers though I'm sure it gives the people who have many an advantage but I have had assets "flop" before and I think, that if it has a good thumbnail, when its released and if it looks good on the screenshot has a big influence too and my better assets have, most of the time, been more succesfull than the worse ones.( I have 1800 followers BTW).But even then, judging the quality of an asset by the number of subscribers wont work. The whole workshop is kinda borked because you cant determine quality trough a screenshot. At least we have a limit on the polycount for this contest. What happened to the simtropolis curated list BTW? Anyway, I totally agree with you guys and really hope that the ones who deserve it will win and that the next contest is going to be a bit fairer...

I 100% agree with this statement. If the asset isn't tested in game....this is almost like North Korea having shells of buildings facing South Korea to project grandeur (For those who don't get the reference). Who's to say it's not a broken asset/has a crappy LOD if it's judged off of screenshots alone? The original building competition was based off of screenshots, but that's because the game hadn't been released yet. Now that we're 4 months in, there should be a requirement that your asset actually works....

I gave up on doing models for the C:S, just doing for myself. My laptop struggles to open the game and I was just getting on the nerves for nothing in exchange.. Good luck to you guys :(

IMO, sending the models to CO, then, they filter the brokens/bad and make a poll to the community looks a better way to judge. Throwing it on Workshop is just unfair with the unknown modders, let's not forget about the inumerous sketchup converters...

Lol, if this excavator wins this was probably the last contest I participated in! I'm fine to lose to Ulm Cathedral or some of the cool fantasy models in the contest, as they meet the topic exactly. But not this excavator! What is the gameplay value of this thing? How does it even qualify as unique BUILDING (monument)? IRL these machines are mobile and can move on their own.. which makes sense for a machine. Therefor they can't be a monument (which is obviously stationary).

Don't get me wrong it seems to be a well made model and I have deep respect for anyone who can model so nicely but as explained, IMO it doesn't qualify for this contest.
