Honestly, they should rebuild them JUST as they were. Most of NYC thinks that, as does most of the country. I can understand the footprint argument, but in that case, JUST BUILD THEM ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLAZA. I hated Freedom Tower 1.0, and this business of TOTALLY changing the plan after one has been approved... or at least selected (no voter had ANY say in this whatsoever.... if they did, it would have been built like the orig. towers) is just absurd. Anyways, my rant for the day... I agree, it is UGLY. How about the CN tower? I DESPISE that building... and Taipei 101 or the laceName w:st=on>Petronas3.giflaceName> laceType w:st=on>Towers3.giflaceType>.... BLAH.... All 3 of those are SO nasty...

I thought the original design for the World Trade Center was just about the most hideous thing ever, and so did everyone who would have to live in its shadow. I like the new one a lot, though.

As a BATer, I find this topic really interesting. I've put some building on my list (the black one obviously). Storms991 is right about Freedom tour. What a mess...

Now my candidate... In the category Futurist of the past: Habitat 67 in Montreal.

It looks cool, but to me its just a tiny bit complicated, To some it may be a great landmark, but to me it's an eyesore. I would personally not want that thing in my backyard.

EDIT: What's with the massive hole in the middle
EDIT2:I mean hole(S)

If the question concerns Habitat 67, the explanation is that they placed boxy shape on top of each other almost randomly and they were very bad Tetris players3.gif3.gif3.gif

I would say that all of this is boto opinion and debatable, since there are very defined schools of architectural thought. Being from Boston, I would like to present a pair of atrocities that (in my opinion) currently afflict our humble town.

I dont even wanna know what designed that atrocity....

Ive got a place i really hate in Stockholm, That beeing Slussen the busstaion i pass through 2 times a day, every day. It looks like its gonna fall down any second now, concrete design built in 1935, designed for the trafic of that day, its not only overcroweded, its actually falling appart(ive gotta get a camera there to show you)...
And most of Stockholm's central Skyscrapers are horrendous, With the exeption of Kungstornen more or less... H

Yes, it truely is one of the ugliest buildings I've seen. Donald Trump wanted to rebuild them and he wanted to simply build the same building but higher. That would have been great and it would have had a memorial park. But that thing would be nice in maybe a modern European city. But no New York.26.gif

As a future architect, it is complicated...  I hate things that look cluttered.  Especially that thing in Cambridge... eww!  lol, I wish it would melt is a nice comment!  It is an eyesore that looks run down.

The World Trade Center was changed to enhance its strenght.  It was also changed to resemble the future as well as the past - hence the squarness of the building.  I just wish they would have gone a little taller.

I do like the Swiss building in London, but I do agree that the Torre Agla(something) to be butt ugly.

While I agree that the Shard of Glass in London doesn't fit in with its surroundings, I do believe the building itself is a neat design.  It shows the transition of the city from old market place London to Big Time City.

The Boston City Hall... eww, agreed!  However, its neat on its own... But I think they should plant massive trees outside in front of it!  It would break down the broad-massive look it has!  Its just too much concreate.

The Taipei 101, in a way is ugly... however it has its own beauty to behold.

The one that I do find most ugly at this moment is the new tower propsed by Tokyo.  Its an observation Tower and communications tower.  It just looks as if the glass areas are space ships. http://www.skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=36514

To me it actually looks ok, the only thing that matters is where it'll be places, it its in a downtown area, it will surerly blend in, but in a suburban, countryside area, it'll look horrible

Ok, I agree alot of those modernist, brutalist and futurist things are really hard on the eyes, and I'm not sure I'd wanna work in a giant Phallus. But, I'd rather have ugly buildings and architectural variety than a bunch of buildings that are all nice, but look the same.

Now, my vote for this isn't anything famous. Just something that irks me. Every single Walmart looks the exact same from the front. Even McDonalds and Burger King have more variety in their design! And it's a dumb design too- Gray block with red stripe. Makes you want to shop there-- And to thank Comrade Stalin while you're at it.

Well, most of these aren't ugly (besides the Elephant Building), they are just really out of place...

Explaining the Habitat:

The idea was make it so every room in every flat had a balcony or window.

Also this type of building could be built out of prefabricated pieces put together in endless iterations to make apartments of any size and numerous layouts. Also the paterns could be build to fit any shaped plot of land.

How can ANYONE possibly like the original design for NYC's Freedom Tower??? It's the UGLIEST BUILDING DESIGN I HAVE EVER SEEN. The new design is so much better........I'd prefer it if they re-built the twins, but I'll take this new version anyday over the piece of crap they originally wanted to build. Seriously, it's height-cheating more than anything else. The actual roof was around 350 metres high (something in the 300's), with 250 metres or so of nothing but useless glass and a bigass spire built at strange angles. It doesn't take any skill to design and build a big open glass space topped off with a big spire, and that's the cheapest way to grab the 'world's tallest skyscraper' title......New York has been the world's leader in skyscraper construction for so long, and now, they're losing out to every other country. It kills me to see them design such hideous buildings for its future skyline.....a fact that I'm going to change in the next 30 years! This cannot continue.....I call out all future architects to help New York take back it's reputation for having the world's tallest buildings.

Right now I would say, the Torre Agbar or Tate Modern Gallery, are top winners,...or losers, depending on how you look up at it.

Mainly the Torre Agbar sticks out like a swollen thumb, literally.
But p2h5's interior shots; uhhh! what was going on in that dark mind?! I would probably trip and fall into that abyss, at the bottom of the stairs and then have to sue them.

Would someone BAT this??! Seriously, it would be such fun in my cities! I love architecture which has a sense of humour, something often lost today amongst shiny, angular glass and steel.

You know what's weird? You guys have yet to post a picture of a building I don't like. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a building that I could say looked ugly. Granted, some things look better than others, but to me, any sort of construction looks good. I guess wahat really is appealing to me is not so much the aesthetics of a building but the massiveness and man-madeness of it.

Thus, I enjoy any building that is bigger than whatever was there previously. I enjoy growth. I want to see cities go up and up, and skylines get huge and extensive. That really means more to me than what an individual building looks like. And personally, I like the new freedom tower better than the old design. It's more massive and fuller. Skeletal construction can be bothersome. And I like glass box skyscrapers. They're shiny.9.gif

I, for one, could definitely see the Anaheim Convention Center as ugly. It is just another one of those unfortunate sports venues that were built with either no regard at all for asthetics (Shea Stadium - truly hideous) or too much (kind of what's going on here). As for a couple more of my local examples:

dcp12167oj.jpg

This one is also at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), right across the street from the Stata Center, as a matter of fact. It is a new freshman dorm, and another new and exciting idea. Many think it looks like a sponge. Some believe it is an oversized lego. Others believe it came from outer space. In any case, it is truly ugly.

eoe012103newtonb4om.jpg

This one doesn't really look that bad, but it does if viewed from a distance (unfortunately I couldn't find a decent picture). This is Newton North High School. It is four stories high, and has no windows in many of the classrooms. The HVAC system is outmoded, and there are concerns of asbestos. The pool is more or less an open septic tank. For yet more, I turn to the local PBS station:

Newton North High School is a giant, brick monstrosity complete with its own mythology. Locals say it was built by a man who designed prisons, and students are inclined to agree.

Just about anything Trump builds is ugly and I don't get it - you'd think a rich guy like him could afford some decent architects

You know what's the worst about the Taj?

Everything is made of really cheap plastic. Even the outside. It just looks like total crap covered in cheezy carnival lights.

I think that building could use just a few more windows... I wonder if it was built during a glass shortage. It must be annoying to work in there (unless its the Federal Reserve or Something).

BTW Storms: The first picture in my last post isn't a convention center, the captions are below the pictures. The convention center was a couple of posts up.
