YES.

At this point it's guaranteed to be finished by the end of the year.

In fact I was wondering if anyone knew a good way of making it so that people could swap between the SD and HD versions without having to demolish their lots.

I feel like only people who are super dedicated to HD would want to keep such a large building/file in HD in their plugins folder, and that most people would rather play with it as HD for a bit but use the SD version in the longrun.

Or is this something I shouldn't even be worrying about? I'm not personally into HD so idk.

I dont really care about HD that much to be honest. Its cool and nice to play with like you mentioned,  but in the long run SD is just fine.

Thanks for the undate. I know we all have lives outside of SimCity. I just love seeing real buildings in the game, especially from my hometown :)

What about making both versions sharing the same TGIs, just like it's done for darknite and maxisnite versions?

That should work for changing the SC4Model file without needing to demolish lots altogether...

Can't help you much about the question. I personally think the category SD - HD is negligible, the category does it look good or not so good is the leading one. I don't know if it's good practice to offer both versions - like most consumers choose the "luxury edition" for a few bucks more without asking: do I really need that? I bet, 80% will download the HD version, the rest will download both and compare them and they will see what they believe into. Basically you're creating a kognitive problem for users because they see only pictures, maybe the quality of their hardware, they can't see the model with your eyes.

As you are the artist and you can judge best - I suggest to make this your own decission. It's an artistic descission - which render you like most.

Export the SD LOD to SC4BAT, which creates an SC4Model file. Note the RTK ID is part of the file name. Move this SC4Model file somewhere else then export the other LOD (just export again in SC4BAT with HD Ouput Selected). If the RTK ID is identical for both, great, just export the FSH files as needed to complete everything. If they are not, the only difference should be the Group ID (as Models are typically identified by the Group ID).

  • Copy the 8 digit GID (without the Ox) from the file name of one SC4Model.
  • Then open the other one in Reader.
  • Click Tools/TGI Editor
    • Paste the Group ID in the Group column
    • select every item in the file
    • then apply the change.
  • For the sake of completeness, find the XML file and edit the RTK ID there.
  • Save/close the file.
  • Lastly, alter the GID of the filename to match the change.

Now you can simply swap between files, since the models are identically ID'd.

As for big models and HD renders, I'd probably agree beyond a certain point, HD doesn't make a lot of sense. That said I've done it for some 6-7 storey buildings, although it's much more useful for smaller props and buildings, some people will probably be happy to have them.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

I don't post often (like ever), but this topic caught my attention. While it is horrible that many of these great historic Detroit buildings are being torn down, it is sometimes a necessity. This and many other old buildings (looking at you Wurlitzer Building) are literally crumbling into the streets. There are covered walkways on some streets because of falling materials. I avoid certain sidewalks because I don't want to get hit in the head with decorative stonework. A parking lot might not be sexy or super useful, but in the case of these beyond repair situations, the only option. Again, I hate to see beautiful buildings destroyed, but how long can we endanger pedestrians while playing the development waiting game?

Not sure if anyone follows this thread anymore, but I posted this almost 6 years ago, and thankfully I could not have been more wrong. The Wurlitzer has been restored into an amazing hotel, and the abandoned building next to it just reopened as a hotel as well. An amazing story showing the importance of historic preservation.

Hi!

No one follows that thread because it's been replaced by this one. I've moved your post over to here. *:)

Yeah both of those have turned out really well and completely shocked me. Even just a few weeks before the renovation was announced, I explicitly thought that even with everything else going on downtown that the Metropolitan Building was a goner. It would be an expensive renovation, it has a weird floor plan, and almost all of the windows face alley. I thought something similar for the Wurlitzer, that the super narrow floor plan wouldn't be able to support the high cost of renovation.

And to add to the list is Michigan Central Station which I thought for sure would be demolished.

It's all been really incredible.

Interesting read, thanks for posting these links! It would really have been a shame if these buildings had been demolished.

Wow, just wow.  Your work (and others in this group) is by far my favorite.  Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis (which you guys haven't really touched on, but I have my dreams!) and other Midwest cities have some of the finest architecture around and you guys have recreated it beautifully.  Yours and the other mipro buildings are essentially the historical foundation to my city.

I do have one technical question though.  You mentioned placing the American flag at the top.  Is it possible to have that link up with whatever flag dat we have installed?  I am without a doubt using this in my copy of Vancouver when it's released, so as you can imagine I'd prefer the Canadian flag...not that a US flag is going to stop me from using it though. : )

This is the first time I've really been excited about a BAT release in a long time.  Can't wait!

But that's just a texture id overlap, so it shouldn't be that hard to resolve, no?

Also I've kind of been all over the place lately and I haven't properly responded to the posts here yet. Thank you everyone for your support. @nycsc4  I understand what you mean about the flags, and if I wasn't already doing so much exporting to make the HD version I would have made a flagless version, but a man can only take so much exporting. >.<

Don't worry about it, Jason!  It'll just have to become my new American Embassy.  : )

Anyway, looks amazing and I really can't wait to see it hit the exchange!
