Well...on Wednesday, it'll be my bi-annuary. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to post on Wednesday, because I'll be traveling most of the day...so I thought I'd post it here.

2 years as a member of the SC4 community...it went by so fast!

<Edit> Take it back...it's early morning on the 19th where I am.  I'm two years old 39.gif!!!

Today is my 4 year anniversary, yay ! 4.gif

Hmm, I wrote a whopping 13 posts during the last 4 years which probably makes me one of the laziest posters here.

Anyways, thank you all for this wonderful site. Even if I didn't write much, I sure loved to read many many topics here on Simtropolis.

The site as we now know it was launched January 11, 2003- the same day SC4 was released. There was, however, a sort of proto-site before that which was just a forum that went back to October of 2002.

As for who's been here the longest, the answer to that one is obvious: dirk. He started the whole thing, after all. 31.gif There aren't too many people who are still around that were around back in those days, though- rybolton would pretty much be the only one. The other really-old timers like Screwball and golfbunny don't show up anymore.

Hell, even people who joined in 2003 that are still around make up a rather exclusive club. Most of the contemporary active membership is newer blood. Just look through the posts in any recent thread and look at people's join dates- 2006 and 2007 will be the most common with a few 2008s thrown in. Then you'll have a fair number of 2005s, some 2004s, and a select few 2003s. Now, the site isn't really all that much more active than it used to be- those new people coming in are largely replacing others who leave, not supplementing them.

Time goes by fast on the internet. Most people don't actively hang around at a site for more than a year or two at a time (if they ever actively hang around at all)- they move on to other things. People who actively hang around at a site for more than a few years therefore become like those few old historic buildings in a largely newer town. Bear in mind that the World Wide Web did not exist prior to 1991- the world of the internet is only 17 years old. Human civilization has been around for over 4000 years- so someone who's been at a site since 2003 is roughly equivalent to a piece of real world history dating back to the dark ages. Hell, a large number of the sites that are around today didn't even exist in 2003.

“The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every man feels safe on his streets and in the house of his friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of man. This is what man sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.”

Fun how that works, isn't it? The saying "I remember it like it was yesterday" exists for a reason. 1.gif

It really doesn't feel like that long ago that I first joined simtropolis and I remember how excited I was when the first Maxis BATS started appearing, wow, how times have changed. I also thought SC5 when have been around ages ago. But then again, SC4 with all the bats and mods of today could very well be equivilent to a user-made SC5
