I got invited too!  It's only a 4 hour window.  Beta 2 took almost 2 hours to download, and this new Beta is supposed to be a full version of the game.  I wonder if we'll have much of a chance to play.

This is a 4 hour launch stress test ... It's not a beta!

I won't be able to play even if I got a key, the window is so short and being in Australia I won't be free to play it.

Hopefully I get in. For the 2nd beta I got a code from Amazon 2 days after it ended.

This is turning into a bad joke

Why?

Sounds like excellent preparation and planning ... To ensure launch day is as smooth as can be!

4 hours of gameplay? That's how long it will take to download like a quarter of the game for me....

Yup, they will send the codes out in the morning so we can download it early.

If your PC has WIFI, I suggest you take it to the nearest University or coffee shop.

Ehh I don't know. If its a stress test for the servers again than fair enough since I heard they crapped out a few times last beta (although I don't know for sure), however I'm getting the idea that its just the devs offering up features like "how do you like zoning, users?" then getting a response, going back to the drawing board and holding a second beta. I guess that's what betas are for, but having so many tells me at least that they don't have a very good handle on the features their user base want included in the game

I'm in. I think it's looking for trends and user response more than their last betas were. After they saw so many people saying that there was nothing to do, they probably unlocked everything to see if we would still say that.

I'm hoping that my parents, the internet, and the maxis servers will cooperate with me this time. I didn't get to complete a single city in beta one due to the servers and my dad, and I wasn't selected for beta two.

That's a horrible time for anyone living on the other side of the world!

I couldn't get Beta 1 or 2 to work in time to playtest, eventually found a workaround (origin offline mode) but too close to beta 2 cut off time.

I haven't preordered and probably won't, as I have no evidence that the gold (final) SC will work on my machine.

Maybe this 3rd beta will become a time-limited trial after the release date? At least then I might have an opportunity to see if SC is going to work or not on my PC (Ivy Bridge). The beta period this time is early morning here, so that's probably why I wasn't among those chosen.

Its not a beta test if its only 4 hours of which 2-3 hours are uploading the game! I call a beta test releasing the game code for a week or mopre for testing so that errors can be reported and removed. And anyway how can it be a beta when the game has gone gold? There is no opportunity for them to correct errors now.

No its just a simple 'release the game early to a few people for a very short time to get them enthusiastic so they can drum up some hype prior to release day'. Thats all it is. Best testing regime on earth is allowing the preordering public to play the full unlimited game before its formal release. This is why I will still be waiting for a week or two after release before I choose whether to buy. Once all the gushing subsides, thats when the truth starts coming out.

They could have just surprised people by doing what valve did with TF2 before release and say "everyone who preordered up to this point can start playing".

I really hope that this whole online component with their servers works well, to be honest. I think they are taking a huge risk by making in cloud-only, without really building out the offline component of the game.

If they pull it off, I can see advantages to it though. I just hope that the price tag doesn't remain at $60-80 because that is still above what I can afford.
