When I get bored enough, I like to be the disaster - plop an army base if I don't already have one, and tool around in a tank in free-drive just blowing you-know-what up.

Using the free-drive with the road-snap on is a quick and easy way to test highway ramps I'm not sure are going the right way, without using that DrawPaths cheat (and then having to restart the game to get rid of it).

Most of the "missions" are either pointless or blindingly aggravating - or both. Most of the UDI vehicles can't take much abuse, and as someone pointed out already, the game wasn't designed for UDI. The random automata popping up in front of me every other block... even the fire trucks often blow up before I can finish a mission.

I will say though, blasting cats out of trees with a fire hose for $20,000 ... I only wish I could have a job like that for real!

I do for a bit of fun then I instantly regret it when I have to clean up all the mess my Apache has just caused with its random missile firing. One of these days I will hit my power station and then my whole city is going to go down.

I will get fed up with them in due course. They could be more fun in the new game with its eye level views.

By the way, I've got a question: I somehow get only helicopter UDI missions but never police car, or city bus, or garbage truck, or whatever missions.

How can I get more of the other missions?

You could just use the cheat hidepaths instead of restarting your game.

These help quite a bit at the start of the game if your mayor rating is dropping. If you got a big city you may as well forget most of them. Does anyone know if changing the no. of cars/peds in game settings will affect this minigame?

Try the drawpaths cheat... Much better testing method :P

I use that too, extensively, but it's not as much fun :P

I also use it to try out my RHW intersections :)

Once again I'm a mayor not a chauffeur, pilot, train engineer, or bus driver!!!

emphasis on bus driver.

I like to drive around my city in mayor limo. Does anyone know a mod that makes police cars escort you as you drive the mayor limo? In real life often rulers of cities or countries are accompanied by police or military.

Eh.... I have yet to see a city mayor drive around with a personal motorcade of bodyguards.

I guess you've never been to New York.

I tried UDI  for a couple of missions then promptly turned it off. Doesn't add anything to the game for me.

*Sorry for necroposting but I was searching to see if UDI missions were necessary before asking in a new thread.

When I first picked up Deluxe back in the day, I played them all the time for this or that reason. Can't say I've played a single mission since returning to SC4. Not that I have anything against them, but I just don't think about it. I have the zot turned off during game play so usually just forget about it.

After reading posts like these, it makes me want to do the UDIs, but when I actually get to playing, I get so caught up with managing the city and development that I just forget about them again.

So I didn't vote cause it's not like I won't play them when I actually remember to play them.

I don't do the missions themselves so I ticked 'No'. However I use it for other purposes like the aforementioned testing of continuity of rail lines which somehow always end up with a piece missing.

I don't suppose theres a way to auto turn off the missions rather than having to manually do it everytime is there?

If UDI was like GTA I'd do it more. But when you have a unchanging birds-eye view of a low poly car driving around pixellated streets and crashing into lorries that suddenly appear by magic...

Every time I start a new city I just turn it off and never have to be bothered with them again in that city. I did try the UFO mission a while back but it wasted too much time. I want to manage a city not fly UFOs.

I just shut off the UDI zots in the Sims menu. Another reason why I don't ever remember to do any of them.

One of the first things I do in a new tile is to turn off UDI altogether.  The only time I use mysims is to track bugs and miscues.

I use it to make sure my heavy rail is in the right place. I drive from residential to commercial zones to make sure I didn't miss something (avoiding that the track is complete useless).

I suppose U Drive it was in the game to sim at a younger audience, perhaps?

    You're probably right.

It fits with the whole "My Sims" mode, which was refined in Rush Hour. I believe the whole idea of UDI was to better integrate with The Sims -- such as choosing their car. In truth, I'm not a big fan of these modes, although I occasionally use UDI for testing purposes. They were late additions to the game, and do seem to be quite rushed. In my opinion they're more of a sideshow than a positive influence to city building and management. Who knows what SC4 would have been like if more time was spent on other more essential features.

I feel the same way.  I turn it off.  It is easy to re-enable it if you need it for some kind of tracking purpose.

I remember I used to play a lot with UDI missions when I was getting short of cash. I'd enjoy to plop the Army Base near my city's border in order to get a tank, get the Joy Ride mission and win §70000 :D ... although I'd get negative rating from doing so. Anyway, currently I don't do UDI missions anymore, because I've been focusing on city-building, but I still use UDI in 'free play' mode once in a while.
