Those regions look very good... And the cities are not at all that far apart from one another... I'm getting more and more excited!

I'm not familiar with how airstrips work. I hope the planes aren't supposed to take off into the cliff.

In a shot from the blog it looked like there was a dead-end road just outside city limits?

Still weird clipping errors on the slopes into the airstrip on the left, hope this is fixed as I saw some of it in the beta as well. I'm sure it will be, but just noting it's there

Maxis is not good at making realistic airports. SC4 looks realistic but the airport are awful.

Good ol' Liberty Islands! Someday, I'll repost my old CJ.

Er, its very southern California looking (as expected, unfortunately)

Simcity is not an airport simulator and it never should be. They should use their time to make SC as realistic as possible instead of making the airports as realistic as possible.

In SimCity 2000, if you had big building popping up at the end of your runways, the airplanes would crash into them. I know Ocean has said that terraforming happens at a civil engineering level only... but there's no way that steep cliff at the end of that runway isn't flattened from a civil engineering point of view, even if the runway itself isn't actually there.

Well, I care the less about airports as far as other things are good. And the other buildings are pretty nice. I can't really say bad about them. The only not good things are those that are not in the game like other building styles.

Nothing in this remake went realism first. The main design choices were for multiplayer and leaderboards..nothing else.

Last I checked, their glassbox engine was there to give realism to traffic and people, including cities as a whole. Why should airports be any different? If it's because "they were trying to conserve space in tiles", well that just goes back to another problem.

Airports are a huge part of cities.

Honestly id say the traffic levels are a bit inflated for the population sizes looking at the various betas and screenshots. In the games defense airports have never been a strong suit of simcity, they are just too large to properly shown. Its always been one thing ive never let bug me realism wise.

Though when I was a kid playing simcity 2000 I always assumed each game the maps would be getting larger and larger till we had all the room for this stuff...i would of never guessed theyd be going in the opposite direction.

I don't personally like the look of the airport, it's too "blocky" for me ... But on the scale of things I care about, it's really low on the list!

Re: going backwards ... I don't see it like that ... I mean the maps were getting bigger and bigger because the simulation wasn't necessarily improving. Now that they have focussed on the simulation, which is now amazingly better than ever, the maps will grow as that simulation is improved upon.

I guess I'm saying you have to look at the product as a whole. Just judging it on map size really does the game a disservice.

I think the traffic levels look overly congested for possibly two reasons:

1) I've heard that buildings in these cities can house something like 10,000+ people, to give the population of being near a million when in reality, the hi-rises should have no more than a few hundred residents... Maybe 700 at absolute most.

2) Probably Maxis messed up with the day/night cycle in the sense that it's too short. What that implies is that all these units are going to appear on the streets at the same time to go to work and come back from work, when it should really be spread out over several hours. Imagine if every single person in New York City had to be at work at exactly 8am and was free to go back home at 4pm exactly (including schools). It would be the worst traffic disaster ever, and probably something along those lines is what happened with this new SimCity, too many units, not enough time in too small of a tile.

Simulation and graphical representation are two different things. You can aim for a more realistic simulation of a complex system while being abstract in your depiction of it. The art style is inspired by model railroading and the simulation is a more realistic approach based on scientific models.

I hope there are other New York landmarks (like the Empire State Building) and not just the Statue of Liberty.

I'm pretty sure landmarks like the Empire State Building are a thing of the past.  Haven't seen any indication of them being in this game, which is just another letdown...

Too bad in that region view there are all those gaps between cities...have you ever seen a major city region with unused space in between cities...New York (east coast?)...not even farms?  Love the night view, but sadly the gaps ruin the picture.

We all know why they arnt there. Why give it to them in their 60 dollar game for free when you can give it to them in 4.99 packs a few weeks later.

Interesting tidbit:

2KM in Manhattan is the distance from 1st street to 26th street. Has anybody tried to create a map with a perfect grid pattern? were you able to get 26 streets worth of grids? Curious about this games scale.

What they are trying to show with that link is that under the 'culture' city specialisation menu there were a bunch of landmarks shown in the beta. I was very surprised that they were included landmarks after the $20 Euro pack has already been announced. I can't recall all of the landmarks listed, so it'd be good if someone was able to post and image of the menu that actually works.

Well I see the Empire State Building is there, still I would like to know why they went with Koelner Dom over Schloss Neuschwanstein as the alternate German landmark.
