After one of the warmest Octobers on record, November has been only slightly warmer than average thus far here. At least for the past couple of days it actually feels like Fall, high temps in the low 70s/upper 60s. Nights are still warm in the 50s, when they should be in the 40s by this time.

The "Polar Vortex" made itself felt even down here in San Antonio, Texas, where daily high temperatures are below average by 30°F for this time of year, and overnights lows are at the freezing point and even lower on our northern Hill Country fringes.  Of course, that nowhere compares to what those of you up north are getting, but for us Hawaii-transplanted Texans...

 

The first freezing cold front of the season, however, has ushered in something worse for us:  Cedar Fever season.  Ashe juniper, also known locally as "mountain cedar," peculiarly pollinates in the winter, and the Ashe juniper forests to our north in the Texas Hill Country rely on cold, dry, arctic winds to crack open the swollen cones of the male trees and spread their pollen clouds.  This cold air blast has been early and intense, and, as a result, the first mountain cedar pollen front has also been early and intense, registering the past few days with the highest measured Ashe juniper pollen counts for this time of year in over 13 years.  A couple hundred grains of pollen per cubic meter of air is high enough to unleash airborne mass-suffering in Dallas...we got in San Antonio a few days ago a choking Ashe juniper pollen count of 31,000!   Those sorts of sinus-slaughtering numbers are seasonally typical here, and as Ashe juniper pollen is also one of the more potent allergens known to irritate humans, the southeastern fringe of the Texas Hill Country stretching from San Antonio to Austin is a boon for pharmaceutical companies, who alternately rank San Antonio and Austin as the "Allergy Capitals of North America."

It's right at 32 degrees and white stuff is falling from the sky coating everything in a cold white film. Not sure what it is but it can't be snow cause it's only mid November in Nashville. We don't have such things here this early in the year.

I woke up this morning surprised to find my vehicle covered with ice. It seems the temperature dropped to a low to mid 20s.

Wow I knew it was bad but had no idea it was that bad. And it's just November. In Nashville it's 49F and falling now that it's getting dark.
