I'm not sure about having grass around the skylight; I'm not sure they'd do that in real life. Otherwise it's a very nice building!

I'd make it medium wealth, probably office, but we certainly could use more commercial services in the game, so it's up to you.

OH JASON! So many things to say about this building! First of all, I LOVE IT! Second of all, I think you should make it CS$$$ because it does look rather upscale, and I'm not sure why, but it seems to me like it'd be filled with retail, much like a certain mall I've been to in Chicago. I LOVE the windows as most people mentioned (I have a bit of a Bauhaus fetish; P.S. you can find more pictures and even floorplans of Bauhaus Dessau if you look for them); I LOVE the inset doorway - it's classic 3D facade modernism; I LOVE that you made it environmental with the green roof (it also reminds me of the lower-rise buildings of Rockefeller that have greens and tennis courts on the roof); and that little bit of overhang on the structure on the roof caused a puddle of drool on my desk here, it's the next best thing to being cantilevered (which I also have a fetish for 3.gif) Amazing Jason, simply amazing; and to think you just put it together in your spare time during what is normally the most stressful time of the semester! Thanks for the good taste! 9.gif

Good luck for the final!

If you don't pass, I'm gonna grab a metal bar and gonna smash some professor skulls.

I've finished it and am exporting it.  There is a problem with exporting it though, but I don't think it will delay things very long.

Here are some perspective renders for the fun of it.

    sojotha4.jpg

I think this one would have looked good in my architecture portfolio, it's too bad I didn't make it a few months earlier.

I only have one final left, and there is no test for it (I just need to go there, we'll be doing fun things).  The final is tomorrow morning, and afterwards I'm going back home, and starting vacation.  I expect to get a lot of stuff done then. 1.gif

Ill Tonkso:  Thanks!  Yeah, I think this one will appeal to a lot more players than my building usually do, since both Americans and Europeans can use this in their cities.  This is going to be a CS$$$.  I've tried to make the roof look wealthy though, so hopefully it will feel like a CS$$$ overall.

Mightygoose:  Yeah, I'm going with CS$$$

Patriots_1228 & Irfox:  Wow, I think most people would say the opposite, there is a lot more CO$$$ stuff on the STEX.  Most of it is skyscrapers though.

Krio:  lol, well, there is that grass on the roof, maybe it's a grass farm. 1.gif

Nofunk:  I don't see any reason why the skylight couldn't be there.  Skylights have been put in grassy areas on roofs in real life.  The only difference is that they have areas of non-grass around them, to keep the skylight dry.  Mine has a small one.  If it was real, it would probably have to be bigger.

Swiss_Canadian:  I'm glad you like it!  9.gif  Those are all things that I think about it too.  1.gif

    JosefMayor:  Thanks. 1.gif

gfv1974:  Thanks, hopefully it will finished soon.

Krio:  Yeah, hopefully I did good on all of them.  I know I did good on my Physics and Industrial Drawing final.  I know I didn't do very good on my Calculus final, and I don't know how I did on my drawing final (it was an actual drawing, which I turned in early last week).

Thanks for the support everyone. 1.gif

Thanks Bixel, hopefully they'll be finished soon.

    Some updates from me:

    - I'm still having exporting problems with The Sojot Building.  Check out the 3ds Max Troubleshooting thread to see what.

    - I'll be finishing Van Wingerden Plaza and then I'll try to render that, and I'll see what happens.

    - I recently opened "the CD Building" from last August, and did a preview render, accurately scaled, and properly lighted, and I have to say, it is thoroughly horrible.  At the time I didn't know how to do accurately scaled preview renders, so all of my modeling is really blocky and unrefined.  The textures would have to be redone too.  I will not be finishing this building.  Someday I'll probably revisit the idea though.  If you don't remember what I'm talking about, don't worry about it.

    - I really want to finish something, lol.  But the whole not being able to export thing really demotivates me.

    - I'm on summer break!  So I'll have some more time nowadays.

    - A while ago my plan was to release some stuff by mid-April, but I bumped that back to mid-May when finals came.  Mid-May is still realistic for something to get released if this rendering problem is solved.

Woo congradulations on getting to the break. It's damn nice to not have anything to do for a little while isn't it? This is the first time I have seen the Sojot Building. I like it. It's got a nice generic feel ot it and I like that it's really long but short in front. Very unique. The windows are, of course, top notch. Hope you can clear up the rendering issue. Can't wait to have this one to use in game.

spa:  lol, yeah, definitely.  Thanks, SimFox is looking at it now to see what he can do, hopefully it can be rendered.

    Jacqulina:  Thanks.  1.gif

Van Wingerden Plaza A (the tall one), is done.  I've reworked the roof, and it looks much better.  I've done the night lights, and those look nice too.  Van Wingerden Plaza B (the short one) shouldn't take too long to make after this, I just need to rearrange which windows get lit up, change the roof and glass a little (so they don't look exactly the same).

    BUT!  There's a problem rendering!

When exporting, the night lights show up during the day, and there is no night time render (as if there weren't any nitelites).  It seems like it doesn't realize my nitelites are nitelites.  I'll experiment first, and then I'll post in the 3ds max thread about it, but in the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions, I'm open to them.

Jacqulina:  Thanks, I hope so too.

Aleking:  Thanks!  Excellence is what I'm going for, so I'm glad that's what's happening.

    Ok, some news!

    But in the BSP thread!

I've been sort of busy in real life the last few days, so I haven't had time to work on much.

The Sojot Building has been successfully rendered!!

I need to re-render it though, because I forgot to do a few things, but that can be finished tomorrow.  I'll work on VanWingerden Plaza tomorrow too.

Hey Jason, great job on your BATs 39.gif

I look forward to see more of the (already excellent) VanWingerden Plaza. The roof looks more than ok IMO.

A thought about the Sojot Building: the appearance of the building is very box-y at the moment. Since you intend this to be a wall to wall building I thought it might look better if you open up the design at the front and/or back of the building more to create more "tension" (looks a bit flat now). Only my opinion, looks great anyway.

    Keep it up! 44.gif

ilikehotdogsalot:  I definitely agree.  Hopefully this will make it easier for people to make wall to wall areas.

    josefmayor:  Me too!  3.gif

andisart:  What do you mean by "open up"?  I'm actually done with this one already, but I'd like to know for future buildings.  Thank you for your input! (I don't usually get much advice) 1.gif

    jaqulina:  thanks!

I should probably update everyone on the buildings:

VanWingderden Plaza A (the tall one) is finished (including a reworked roof, which looks better than the old one).  Nitelites are also done, and they look good.  Right now though, there is a problem with exporting it.  For some reason, it is not recognizing my nitelites as nitelites.  It seems to think they are normal lights, so they are appearing in the day render, and there is no night render (since it thinks there are no nitelites).  Once I get around to fixing that though, the VanWingerden Plaza set shouldn't be too far from completion.

The Sojot Building is actually 99% done.  It's rendered and almost completely modded.  This will be on the STEX any day now.

I just uploaded it to the STEX 39.gif, so you can see the night preview of the Sojot Building there.

I'll show a night preview of VanWingerden Plaza (also showing the new roof) tomorrow.

@Jason: What I meant with opening up the design was parts extruding or intruding the flat front or back wall, like extruding entrance areas, intruded window areas, stuff like that. This would help work against the building appearing "just as a box", since the sides need to stay flat because of the concept of a wall-to-wall building. You know what I mean?

    Yahoo to the release, btw39.gif

cammo2003:  Thanks!  It looks quite nice there.  1.gif

sim shady:  Thanks!  The building can be found here.

andisart:  ooohh, yeah, now I know what you mean.  The building did end up being very boxy, and that would have helped it.

Here is VanWingerden Plaza at night:

    vanwingerdenprev01gx8.jpg

I think I'm going to add some lights to the roof too.

Excellent work. I love the little details around the base of the building. Texturing is crisp and clean as always and It almost looks like you can see the desks and chairs through some of the windows.
