I've tried making the bigger roof a little more interesting, but can't make any considerable progress there.

Tried a couple different textures for the windows. Which one looks better or has more potential, 1 or 2?

I'm also considering ditching the tower. What do you guys think?

I like #1 because you can see the window mullions much more clearly. But I also feel like the white part of the texture looks like it might supposed to be window blinds, which of course these windows wouldn't have. So I might make the white part darker.

Another option is to make the glass transparent and model an interior. The windows are small so the interior modeling could be vague and abstract. Maybe you could model a rough interior, and then slap some busy looking textures on everything inside to help give it some variety.

For your roof and wall materials, and whatever other materials you see fit to do this for, go to the Special Effects rollout in the material and turn on Ambient Occlusion. That should help make your roof junk feel more grounded.

    It's funny to see people from Middle and South America BAT stuff from Cologne and talk about it while someone who is from Cologne comments. :D Gotta love Simtropolis. :}

Back to topic: In addition to what Jason said, I don't really knwo what to make out of your roof junk. Are the gabled structures supposed to be skylights? Are they made of metal? Why do some ducts run from the HVACs to some of those structures, but not to one of them?

I'd also add some flashing to the tops of the parapet walls. That's just another of those little details that should help to make the building more realistic.

I like how you varied the rooftop textures on the angled roof sections so they don't bleed into one black lump - good job! The chimney/smokestack has also changed apparently, and I think it's a huge improvement over the old one.

All in all, I'd say some more work on the main roof (plus the flashing all araound), and we have a winner. If you are uncertain what to do with that large empty roof surface, just scroll around a bit on Google Maps / Google Earth / bing maps and see what similar industrial facilities have on their rooftops - you may get some valuable inspiration from what you see. :)

The roof pipes need better textures, otherwise its ready for nightlighting. For an otherwise bland building, good nightlights and lotting makes the deal.

@T_Wrecks: I'm from Indonesia and I model Chicago style houses :D

Great job so far. Keep it up.

Just out of curiosity: on which RL building is this model based?

Thanks so much for the replies!!!

I'm currently working on a house for college so i advanced very little. I'm trying to figure out what a flashing is, how to make the whole Ambient Occlusion work and make some realistic roof junk...

And since you asked this is the building i'm using as an inspiration. Please keep in mind that its not a recreation...

After quite some time (a really long time actually), i'm back!  :D

I've been working on a little art gallery. I'm having trouble with the glass entrance which right now looks like there's no glass at all.

    14.jpg

And a commercial building. This mirror glass is driving me nuts. The first floor looks like a wall!

    What do you guys think?

well, first, that good that returned

second, the art gallery looks good donot respect that donot note the glass, I notice very well as the desire var night light

third, the building has a good modeling, the windows are amazing, on the windows and wall, maybe I should make them transparent, Hip plants that look or a reception, the other idea is to be as dark or polarisadas tall buildings, but I do not think that he really like that idea

    great job

    lol - welcome back! and I thought I was gone a long time....ok I was too :D

I think the  glass looks good as well. throw a fire hydrant or something on the sidewalk for it to reflect or a manhole cover or a newspaper stand/box.....

Some buildings with really reflective glass have a different more transparent glass for the base floors, especially if there's a store there. Maybe you should try that.

Keep up great work! The first one reminds me of old Kosmos cinema from my Szczecin, Poland because of this mosaic: z4745045X.jpg

I didn't realise you were a BATer from way back, I like your work.

With the commercial building, is that based on anything, or made up? - more importantly, do you need mirrored glass? Looks like if you lowered the IOR, more of the transparency would come through and that might help solve some of the issues. But if you really need/want mirrored glass, you'll need to introduce something for it to reflect. Alternatively, maybe try using a different glass material for the base than the tower, it would be pretty unusual to have mirrored glass at street level I would have thought.

Anyway, just a couple of suggestions, hope they help. Keep up the good work :)
