Great suburbs, everyone!  Could anyone give me some advice on how to build some suburbs (all mine don't look very good!)

you can go to the tileset controlling selection (its above the in-game data view selection, across from the mayor rating area on the screen). select one, and only that tileset will grow (unless you install the urban housing mod, which i have). the brown brick homes are New York style, the red roofed ones are European, and the white and grey plain ones are chicago style.

But in my cities I only have Houston and a lot of cute house and bungalows grow, not to mention apartment and tenements. I just want middle class 2 story houses or whatnot, so my suburb can look like a cookie-cutter build.

wow, these suburbs are inspirational.  I can't wait to start working on mine.

as for getting the same type house in one area, you could do what cnystrom1 said and if that is not having the effect you want try this:

find a house style you like, set it to historical and keep demolishing the other styles that build until the style you want pops up.  it may take a while but it will give you the results you are looking for.

Here are some suburbs out of my CJ. Even a Pacific island can have them.

The suburb city of Pateros:

A residential area in the city of Havillah:
<ahttp://img201.imageshack.us/img201/1865/38048in.jpg align=baseline>

And finally, suburbs in the city of Port LaSalle:

The last pic has to be my favorite, I just love the design of the deveolpments I built in that city.

I tried to create a cool suburb, but then every time I failed. For some reason there are always no job zots appearing on my high wealth houses, then every single highw ealth house got abandoned.

Sometimes this occurs to the middle-wealth houses too... why is this so?

Sounds a bit like the I wanna have mostly rich sims at any cost syndrome that's usually caused by setting taxes for R$$ and especially R$$$ much too low, so that these kinds of citizens are attracted to the city although there are not enough jobs for them (yet).

However, this is just a vague guess - without seeing a screenshot of the city and knowing some facts about the transit system, region and city population, job quota, demand and tax settings, a halfways decent analysis is impossible.

You should probably post ypur problem in a different forum, though - lengthy discussions and analyses would take this thread too far off topic, I guess. That said, let's see some more suburbs!

@Fairlane: I agree with you, the last pic is my favourite as well. It's pretty funny, I made a very similar suburb once. Gotta see if I can dig out some pics when I'm back home... 2.gif

wow, nice suburbs! so many users so many styles! Yet it's still the good old suburbs. I too have been creating suburbs, this one is from a multiplayer game i'm playing called SimNation S, this is one of those city's:

Land of the rich! This is a well-to-do area in Rocky Valley Hills called The hide-away
    suburb1a.jpg

Another view, this time, this is a shot of the rich and middle class area. Both are sperated by a wall of trees.
    suburb1b.jpg

More mindless sprawl, notice that alot of the sub-divisions are connected layed out for the car, not pedestrian.
    suburb1c.jpg

Last shot, this one is a just an overview of the medium sized city. This city is part of a 22 plot city district.

Let's some more pics from you! 2.gif

Stardarcy, I noticed in one of your cities, the garbage is dumped off the border of the city. How is that possible?

                                    \/ Thanks

i was using PEG's garbage chute, those things work like magic! They get rif of your garbage without yaking up valuable space like lanfills. You can find it here in the STEX somewhere. Key word: PEG.

The following picture depicts my typical subdivision. It's not entirely realistic. I usually just draw this stuff in when I have the time and space. This is a small subdivision; I have some that are as large as a small city tile. Maybe I will find one and take a snapshot for you to see. 19.gif

    Quick Edit:
I remembered I had this following picture on my computer that displays some R$$$ subdivisions. Sorry for the grainy picture, but I simply resized it and compressed it with Photoshop to make it easier for those with slower computers.

Here are the suburbs to the south of my largest city; Carson City.

I used the European Contemporary Tileset to give the houses that red-roof effect.

selles:  How'd you build such a large housing development without having horrid commute times?  Anytime I try to build a subdivision on that scale, I'll end up getting alot of abandonment due to commute times.
