New Road Textures and "walkable" suburbs

Part of the project i failed to mention was that i was also working on new road and street textures for SC4. Well after toiling after 4 days, i finally managed to replace the basic road and street tiles! I decided to go a different path - walkable suburbs and new urbanism designs when building my cities and layout for my city.

This has resulted in some interesting results. While i will not go in to details over this experiment here, i decided to show ST a few glimpses of some soon to be released beta form road and street textures!

First of... lets zoom into this maze of homes and streets. You will notice that many of the buildings are the same - i'm working on that.

    new-suburbs1.jpg

Zoom in even closer, i have on purpose made the roads more darker, however after close analysis, i have decided to tone down them in the final version1. Most of the buildings have trees on them. I will be trying to find out if i can place them on the roads/streets themselves.

    new-suburbs2.jpg

I made this set of road/street textures considerably more "Square" so that i can imatate real life road layouts. you will also notice that both roads have the grass strips, in higher wealth levels, the grass will be replaced by brick and eventually tiles.

    new-suburbs3.jpg

Heres another picture with a soccer field in the middle. The roads combined with this buildings utalize almost all of the space. Alowing for more density. Parks also help to break up the scene as well.

    new-suburbs4.jpg

This set of textures and buildings can also work well with forested areas - the quiet areas plus parks will make your sims feel like living in true suburb - warm and quiet.

    new-suburbs5.jpg

And finally, this is the textures used by themselves. You can see that the land is maximized and will fit well with compact communities.

    new-suburbs6.jpg

    That is it for now.

This texture pack along with the set of buildings in this map will be placed on STEX next week for a few days. No further details will be posted here, this experiment will be further studied in a new thread.

    Thanks

    @starrdarcy; I like the textures, but the layout is a little too uniform for me; it need a bit more diversity. Here are my two cents;

I just started a new region. My first region I am planning to comeplete 4.gif Usualy I just make cities with skyscrapers and just have a lot of fun but this time I am trying to make a realistic region. I started with a suburb. I am using a New York City region but I am not planning to make it all look like the real thing. Manhattan is going to be a farmland and the skyscrapers will be in the north 4.gif

Have a look. Comments are welcome because this is my first try creating a suburb.

Hey Masterpie, Im not sure of the exact resolutions of your pics... but they should be less than 800x600 or else the mods will delete them. But they look good. How come you put your big stadium out in the burbs? Not enough room downtown?

Yes I'm sorry. I forgot to resize the pics.

I have also added some more. There is plenty of room downtown for the stadium.. because I haven't started one yet 9.gif

I have also just completed the harbor section north of the suburbs (as you can see on the region shot I was just getting started, but now it's done) and now I'm going to start to work on the Downtown.

In my city is a stadium too in the middle of the suburbs. And I thought it looked kinda cool with a highway going underneath.

    Thanks for the comments 4.gif

    Hey,

Does anyone know where I can download better houses?

At the moment I am using the Urban Housing mod, but that mod only changes R$$ houses. I keep having a lot of R$ houses and I don't the standard R$ houses. I can't seem to find any low density mods which changes R$ and R$$, giving my suburbs a better look. Any tips?

    Thanks in advance,

    Nice work Masterpie.

To be honest, the almost euclidean street layout and the stadium seem a bit out of place but thats fine it doesnt have to be perfectly realistic.

but thats no big deal, You have managed to grow just the right kind of houses in an even fashion, and that is what really matters when doing a suburb, not to mention the toughest. My suburbs tend to get messed up when rich sims build gigantic 2*3 mansions that ruin the blocks and look stupid

Beautiful work, everyone....I'm certainly intrigued by your suburban layout, Masterpie.

I have a question for you, Lordofthewise (or for anyone else who can answer it): where did you get these wonderful Scandanavian-looking apartment blocks? I love this picture, by the way!
