I like the blueish text color better, the redish is harsh.

I find some of the color schemes to be more annoying than interesting. Especially when the text doesn't contrast with the background and I have to reload the page a few times to be able to read anything.

Well what is there/here at the moment is nothing short of madness, tacky at the extreme, at that.

I just wonder what other idea is behind it (apart of annoying the heck out of user that is).

To those annoyed by the color scheme, take a look at your calendar (bearing in mind: ST is an international site, and the international date line)

April Fool's joke or not, making a site hardly readable and pictures practically unusable (because you cannot judge any details) for an entire day is probably not the smartest move I have seen in my life.

It's more like a supermarket where the floor is covered in wet soap - ain't it funny? What? You can hardly stay on your feet, and shopping here has become a tedious and annoying experience? Well, look at the calendar, haha!

For those annoyed by this use ABP with this filter
||simtropolis.com/custom/js/functions.js
For those without ABP there are many other ways of blocking pages, just block https://www.simtropolis.com/custom/js/functions.js

I cannot guarantee this will not break some of ST's features.

Exactly what I thought. It would be one thing if this were still 6.0, but the kinks are still being worked out in 7.0 - why add kinks?

I think the saddest part is that when the calender rolls to April 2, the STEX will still need improvement.

Yeah, or just move along to some other site, that doesn't fancy itself sadistic 5 yo.

As for april 1... didn't know it was "being annoing, prick devoid of taste and/or imagination" day.

Or is it a way to compensate for all the mess site has become since this "upgrade"?

Or is it a way to compensate for all the mess site has become since this "upgrade"?

Or you could just grow up and accept that April Fools day is a single designated day where messing about is tolerated and you may also then realize that its just for a day and hardly something thats going to massively affect your life.

And I'd have thought you of all members would have realized that the upgrade was a massive piece of work undertaken by the Simtropolis staff and was always obviously going to take time to fine tune as its a completely different change of software. I could understand your frustrations if this was a 'pay to use' site but as its free you should quit your whining.

Regards,

Richard

That's OK, SimFox has been out gunning for me since the new free upgrade turns out has not pleased him.

In fact, I believe he feels this "so-called upgrade" was done out of idle boredom, that the amount of time and effort a very small group of volunteers dedicated to upgrade us out of a sorely outdated platform was an act of evil purely to inflict irritation and misery.

It doesn't bother me so much, I've been through it all before, but it does bother me that the people quietly working in the background to improve this system everyday should have to put up with such relentless bitterness.

It is on their behalf, that I will be facilitating SimFox to deal with the shortcomings of the site by having him take a healthy vacation from Simtropolis until such time that the site's new features have lived up to his standards.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

:) If you thought ST6 speed and performance wasn't "broke" ... I want to live in your world!

Seriously, though, I think ST6 was at the end of its life on that platform, the forums functioned terribly, everything was agonizingly slow.

I think you'll agree that ST7 speed and performance lately is orders of magnitude better. I would consider that a pretty signficant fix.

I really don't know why some people are complaining. Sure there will always be a few bugs and adjustments needed, as the same with any major upgrade. But personally, I think ST7 is much improved in terms of both appearance and performance.

Appearance - yes. Performance - yes. Layout - Not so much.

People are complaining because the new CJ section as well as the STEX are really different. Not just looks, and it's not a "I'll get used to it" thing. The navigation in the new CJ section is hard, and the STEX search is horrible. Those are the 2 nitpicks (actually they are quite major) of mine. In fact it seems ad if the CJ section has been really dead lately.

People don't really realize ST6 was an old program. They only see the outer shell of what is a large egg. (strange analogy but whatever...) They are not builders of the site. But rather users. The Old site may have been better for the users, but worse for the builders. And ST 7 is just the other way around. I think after more improvements the site will be really great.

Another thing is well, the plain fact that people notice the bad more than the good. So complaints will arise without any acknowledgement of the good things and the things that work well. That is just in human nature, and can be seen in literally everything.

First, Dirk, I like your new sig. Now if you can just keep him on the screen and out of the code.

Second, today there is a bunch of garbage consisting of topic names at the top of the screen in some kind of panel. Can you kill that soon, please?

Agreed, and people have been very clear and I hear them. That kind of feedback I can sink my teeth into and get to resolving. I've already mentioned that those things are getting addressed (working with Zelgadis, trust me, he's on my case which is a GOOD thing) in between the server tuning priorities. The constant whining and sniping and snarky comments, however, which adds nothing useful to the conversation, that kind of stuff I don't tolerate for long.

Yes, it's killed now.

I've had trouble connecting to ST all weekend, always connection time outs etc :uhm:

I hear you, apache is consuming memory until it dies, so I'm trying to track that down today.

Dirk, thanks for your prompt attention.

Apache going into memory grab mode indicates a loop trying to service incoming requests. Are the buffers big enough? Is there, maybe, an off-by-one problem with the queues? Can you tell if some heavy download traffic had been started? Could you be under attack by "anonymous" users? I am not very keen on people stomping around in the system without logging on. There is no question that we are getting denial of service, the question is why?

I had trouble connecting to the system before noon on both the last two days. My ping program couldn't get a response at all, so I assume apache had stopped listening and was in its loop-de-loop.

I have pretty good intuition on QA and debugging issues. If I can help in any way, please let me know.

I'd noticed it on the Omnibus page, but not here in the forums. It is quite nice. Great work on the Omnibus to all involved. I'll have a better look around it sometime.

(Just playing around with the font, too. I rather like Times New Roman.)

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Yes, I wanted to ask that question too.

    I think I found it.

Not sure why it went away, although I have a theory. But I believe it's back now.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

True, thank you. Did Dirk solve the run away problem with Apache's memory? Seems fine now.

I think something is wrong with my profile (view my content...St Exchange). When I list my Stex files I have 14 items and some files are "missing". If I do a search for my name these files show but I have other bats not made by me also showing.?? I think I had about 20/21 files. Strange Edit:- I know it's fine tuning but I thought I would bring this to your attention. Good work so far.

Yes it's currently being worked on, I am using Sphinx for search, and it's not quite indexing all the data, but will be resolved soon.

I'm curious though as to what the difference is between active post count and normal post count. Were some posts not copied over from ST6 and so they don't count as active posts anymore? That's my only theory :)
