I grew up a Yankee fan, so I'm relatively safe from this problem... but I don't see how I could ever root for a team that routinely sucks. If I had grown up in Pittsburgh, I would probably either not be nearly as into baseball as I am, or have found a different team to root for, But I doubt I'd be a Pirates fan.

Similarly, if the Yanks were ever to become a lackluster team (they have done so before, but not since before my time), then I would probably stop paying attention to them. No fun watching your team lose.

Huh? Surely you are mistaken. The "We are Fam-a-lee" days were before my time. Around the end of the 70's. How far it went into the 80's I can't say I know. But if I had to guess, the last time the Pirates finished over .500 was probably 1992. When I found myself old enough to really know the sport and what happened with it, I was about 10. That was the 1990 season. Again, if I recall correctly, that year Atlanta finished dead last. (This was when there were 2 divisions. East and West. I forget but I think Atlanta was in the west.) I remember thinking how lucky I was to be a fan of a great team but I also recall feeling pity for Atlanta.. (The Bucs lost the NL title that year to Cincinnati.) The next two years, the team i pitied at the end of the '90 season, Atlanta, beat Pittsburgh in that same series. Atlanta has been a contender for much of the time since.

The Bucs have never been the same.

Regardless, I am still a Pirate fan. There is no point to rooting for a team strictly because they log W's. The Bucs are my team because they are my team. Simple. And to be honest, this last season was the most exciting in years. Sure, they finished poorly, but for a good portion of the season they were either in first place or were contenders for first. It was... exhilarating. I love my Buccos. I hope this year is the year. 500 is all we in Pittsburgh have wanted all this time. Baby steps.

Yeah, 1992 is correct, that was the end of party, the we are family celebrations ended when the Bonds ship sailed.

@ Duke: Growing up a Braves fan I was lucky enough to see much success with the Bobby Cox era, This season will feel so different without the heroes, that have been there since the day I was born.

There have been two NHL work stoppages in the last ten years. As much as I love the Red Wings, it's difficult to work up the urge to care about them anymore.

I think it's acceptable to give up on your hometown's team if they suck year after year. Just, you know, don't go from rooting for the Yankees to rooting for the Red Sox unless you brother was traded there or something like that.

Most of Western PA feels the same way but when the Bucs were winning this past summer the fair weather fans were out in force. I'm not giving up on the Bucs. But I do also like the Angels. Always have.

Pens won again. 2 in a row!

My avatar is proof I have an allegiance to an NHL team... the Canadiens. :D I'm not a bandwagoner... if I was I would have jumped off when they finished last in the Eastern conference last season.

Boy was that a fun season. Not.

And mad props to you for it! Original 6! Plus I know the subtle difference in how one should pronounce your team's name and how it often is pronounced. But then again, I studied French for 5 years. Lol. By senior year I was the only dude in French class. Shame I was so awkward around the fair sex at that time. If I knew then what I know now... :whatevs:

But in summation, I'm pleased hockey is back. The hockey scene here in Pittsburgh (If you don't follow, the Penguins have the top 2 ranked players in the world. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin) is what I wished the baseball scene was.

I'd also like to note that Sidney Crosby, who is the poster boy for the NHL, is a stand. up. guy. There is no one more suited for his position.

I will always associate the Pittsburgh Penguins with a member here by the name of MiniMark. Why? Well, look at his avatar. He's always had their logo as his avatar and that was the first place i ever saw it regularly.

And how many people spell it incorrectly, as well. :whatevs: I usually end up not pronouncing it the "proper" English way (emphasis on the ens), but the French pronunciation.

To this day my all-time favourite game is a tie between the Centennial game on December 4, 2009 or when they stunned everyone and defeated Washington in Game 7. :D

We had similar numbers in our French classes once it became optional. I wanted to take it all the way through - a second language is definitely useful.

The Habs have a magnificent history.

The first thing that sprang to mind when I read this was the Habsburg dynasty, who also had a magnificent history.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Too much talk about hockey. Need a new subject now.

There's no such thing as too much hockey talk.

@NMU: Yea, it's pretty awesome history. They did a great job going over part of it during the Centennial Game. It was an amazing production.

I was done rooting for teams after the Wild Cards were done, except for rooting against Atlanta, because I'm a bitter Vikings fan and 1998 was the worst NFC Championship game EVER.

Damn, was hoping the Falcons would go all the way.

Football. Meh. Not my thing. I tried to like it for a long time but I can't be bothered to care about it. But it's ok to watch on occasion and it's still better than basketball.

I have a friend who's really into Starcraft.

The problem with making a spectator sport out of video games, though, is that they don't last the same way. Sports like baseball, football, hockey, etc. were pretty much exactly the same 20 years ago and will be pretty much exactly the same 20 years from now. They are more or less timeless. But the same cannot be said for video games. It is a much more rapidly changing world, as anything directly dependent on technology will be.

I'm totally still not over the '98 NFC Championship game, and I'm not above admitting it :D

My experience watching my friends play Killer Instinct or Goldeneye back in high school is that video games face an upward battle on the road to becoming a legitimate spectator 'sport.' That's not to say I'm against it, I just think we're looking at a pretty long time before something like that gets as big as, say, the national spelling bee that's televised on ESPN.

That's ok. I still fantasize about beating the crap out of Sid Bream. Or Francisco Cabrera. I can't let that one go.

The only game I ever found myself being entertained by watching someone play was L.A. Noire. I've never even played it. I've really moved away from playing video games. I played NHL '12 last week and that's the first time in a while.

I had the most diverse video gaming experience in the PS1/N64 and PS2/GC eras. That is to say, middle and high school. Those were the days when I would be over at someone's house, look through their game collection, say "this looks interesting!" and fire it up. And as such I ended up playing a lot of different games from that era even though I never owned most of them myself. Since then this sort of thing has mostly stopped happening and my experience with different games since then has thus been comparatively minimal.

I had my NES and SNES experience too, of course, but I was younger when those consoles were still "current" and at the time I was more into PC games (we had a computer at home, but no consoles).

I have only played SNES a handful of times. NES on the other hand, I have "wasted" many an hour on.

3D games are a different animal from 2D games. They're easier if done TPS style rather than FPS style since you can see around and behind you more. You have to be careful with camera angles, though. Bad camera angles can make a TPS game rather annoying (see: Megaman X7)
