I've noticed the ABC's started covering womens' cricket more, which is nice.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I think people who try to nitpick sports for sexism are just looking for a reason to argue.. If they wanted a sport where everyone can mindlessly particpate in/watch should take a look at racing..

Regardless of any ideology about sports and gender, two simple but important realities remain that keep women's sports second class to men's:

1) not as many women are as interested in playing or watching sports as are men (especially true of rougher sports such as Football)

2) male athletes can have children without it impacting their career, female athletes cannot

This isn't a debate, this is a discussion. We're not on opposing sides of anything.

It's part of the sport section during the news. The only way people wouldn't be watching it is if they don't watch ABC news or if they stop watching just for that part of the report.

Cricket isn't particularly rough, so it doesn't have that against it (roller derby is, and that's dominated by women, so it's not a universal point). It helps that cricket is popular with both genders here.

Regardless, it's a bonus whenever a region's sports scene becomes more dynamic. I don't watch women's football but I was at a bar in Pittsburgh down the street from the stadium where the Pittsburgh Passion play several months back. It was great to meet the team after their game as well as the visiting team too. The Cleveland team came by with the home-towners and all hung out together. I don't pay attention to the sport but I still appreciate it being there.

I would change Duke's second point to the fact that women are just not in the same class athletically as men.  The WNBA champions will never be able to compete with the NBA champions.  I would assume the same of soccer and other sports in general.  Men have a significant lead in almost every single category in Olympic track and field records ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Olympic_records_in_athletics ).  This is related to being able to bear children, only in a different way.  Biology is ignored at our peril.

That being said, I also think that if women want to play sports, they should not be prevented from doing so.  Being sporty in some way is part of a healthy lifestyle.

Does anyone here have any experience with sprites? I am trying to make people sprites that are 30-40 pixels tall using True color (32 bit) colorspace.

If you allow the full color space, is it really a sprite? 8 bit sprites should not have more than 3 colors besides black and white. 16 and 32 bit sprites should not have more than 16 colors.

Beyond that, it's just art and you're either good at it or you're not.

I certainly can't help you with that. What exactly is the definition of a sprite?

Wikipedia and Dictionary.com both say that sprites are 2D pictures that are part of a larger scene and are often animated. Check the thread I made in General Off Topic if you wish to help. Would you rather I call my people "Pixel Art"? 16 bit color works as well but I don't know how to convert something to 16 bit. I have yet to use more than 8 colors per person sprite. Upping the total colors per person to 16, even if using 16 bit colorspace could vastly improve appearance.

EDIT: I use the alpha channel for the windows in most of my rooms, so the colorspace I use is 32 bit but other than windows, I have been using 24 bit colorspace. Gimp does not have a 16bit indexed mode as far as I can tell but I want to have more realistic skin tones (which can be done in 16bit but not easily in 8bit).

Ah, OK, I see. You're just editing the image in RGB mode, not saying you're using the full range of colors.

it is best to save your images in PNG format. Sometimes you will get a smaller filesize if you convert the image from RGB (24 bit, not 32) to indexed (8 or 4 bit), sometimes not. Worth trying. Easy to do in GIMP, go to image → mode.

Another benefit of indexing the colors is it prevents you from adding colors to the image unintentionally. I find this especially useful for making maps because if you add text to an RGB image, you will get a whole range of colors as the various letterforms anti-alias with the background (I am not a fan of anti-aliasing in general). Index the colors and you will force the text to be hard edged.

What would be realistic skin tones for sprites? What would be realistic fabric colors and patterns for sprites? How do I show shading and folds realistically in a small sprite? Should my discussion be moved to my thread?

Ah. Yes I've heard that term before but my lack of knowledge on the subject will certainly keep me from offering any assistance. I was just curious and googling terms can be less personable than discussions with real people. I would imagine this conversation could stay here but you may wish to move it to your thread to make the thread that much more thorough.

Larks - Music may never be the same but that is kind of the point, mais non? Gotta stay fresh! Artists come and go but one positive note you can take from it is it may be better to go out guns blazing than to go stagnant and irrelevant. I'm listening to Alice In Chains at the moment and it reminds me that Layne Staley could have easily let this happen had he not met death at such a young age. I know you are very much into your music so I'm sure you are moved by it.

Ocram, if you want examples of how to do sprites, there are many many sprites out there on the internet to look at as examples, both ripped from games and custom made.

Yeah, I've very saddened, Music means a lot to me, also without the artist, it can't continue.

That's actually one of the reasons I'm glad my favorite band, Led Zeppelin, broke up and never reformed or toured again after the drummer passed on.  I see the Rolling Stones gyrating around on stage, all wrinkles and skin and bones, singing the same old, tired songs they've always sung and I think, "Oh God, thank you for not letting this embarrassment happen to Led Zeppelin, thank you thank you thank you."  Then, they have a reunion concert like the one at the O2 Arena five years ago, and it's like a religious experience, awesome and epic and blah blah blah (I have the DVD).  Meanwhile, the three remaining members have followed their own paths, creating their own new, unique music, adding some more art to the world instead of just awkwardly retreading the same old ground for the 10,000th time.  Yeah, they still play their old hits at their new concerts, but it's different from what the Stones offer us, more dignified somehow.
