Well this is slightly embarrasing.

Australia now has a national airline (QANTAS) that isn't well uh flying...

I may be a tad prejudiced here, but QANTAS is the nicest airline I've ever flown with. I hope they resolve the dispute and return to standard operation soon. I don't want it to go the way of Ansett.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

They've just released the first trailer for the 3D edition of The Phantom Menace; from 2012 through 2017 they'll be releasing the six films of the Star Wars saga in 3D :golly:

To be honest, I'm not sure how excited that makes me feel. I'd post links to those long (and hilarious and quite eye-opening) critiques of the prequel trilogy, but I think all the profanity and hooker-threatening in them would result in a reprimand for me.

The fact that the plot of the first two prequels aren't the best is the reason that it's chiefly Revenge of the Sith + the original trilogy (which will be released in 3D from 2014-2017) that I'm looking forward to, although I will go to see the two other prequels as well. ;)

I wonder how long people will continue to play Sc4, before it becomes forgotten, hope not anytime soon but it is becoming less used every year it gets older i'm sure.

There aren't many other 8 year old games I still play. Now that I think about it, this is pretty much it. It's just that when I look at what's come out in SC5's absence, there is little hope that anything this good will hit the market, especially when that market is so small. I wish there were more of us, but I really don't think there are. SimCity isn't "cool" the way the Medal of Honor games are, or GTA (neither of which I play, but then again I'm not "cool", either).

I'd rather see it re-Nationalised even under Gillard than collapse. Hell Gillard should temporarily nationalise it now already, of course she probably won't...

For those not familiar with QANTAS, it is the world's second-oldest surviving airline (after KLM) and the world's oldest continuously-operating airline. It's our flag carrier.

Everyone who doesn't need to cut back on costs flies it. And I mean everyone. The travel plans of the attendees of the Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth has been affected by this, as has the plans of most, if not all, MPs for the return of Parliament tomorrow.

I'd expect QANTAS shares to take a bit of a tumble when trading resumes on Monday. They'd just given the CEO a 71% pay rise. The unions are asking that the employees get a 2.5% pay rise. Apparently that's too much.

Yes, they should, and if this had happened before the AGM he would have never gotten the payrise.

Can't say I've ever heard of an airline strike before. Then again, I don't think any of the US-based carriers have a unionized workforce.

This isn't a strike. This is management grounding all the planes and, like President Madagascar when someone coughs in Brazil, shutting down everything to preempt a strike. It's sort of like cutting off your arm to fix a fractured ulna.

Okay, now it really makes no sense. Why the hell would they do that? They're hurting their own business!

Maybe Aussies have a different attitude about this sort of thing, but such a move would be suicide in the US. I know if I was scheduled to fly Qantas and my flight was cancelled like this you could be damned sure I would never fly Qantas again.

Quantas hasn't exactly been all sunshine and rainbows lately though. They have had a few craft with engine failures mid flight and emergency landings of some of them too. I think, from what I have heard, and that's not actually much so correct me if I'm wrong because it would be good to get the whole story, I think there was some industrial action taken by their workers recently, demanding more money and respect. There was a group of workers recently that were servicing a craft and found out that if they banged on the back of the toilet cubicle they could get the main cabin doors to open. They were fired.

I think they grounded their flights to get that all sorted out because if your workers are unhappy they then won't actually work.

As an outside viewer I would never fly quantas. It seemed like, at the start of the year, there was a weekly news story about quantas failures, and add to that their treatment of staff, I don't really think I'd want to fly with them.

It sounds like they are in general an awful airline, then. But if that is the case, then why do they seem to be so popular?

Anyways, if they go out of business, so be it. There are many names in the airline graveyard. Pan Am, TWA... A better business will rise to take their place.

Because they were, at one point, an excellent airline, and in many regards still are. The last fatal crash they had was in 1951. Their planes didn't fail as often before they moved maintenance offshore.
