It sounds like they are in general an awful airline, then. But if that is the case, then why do they seem to be so popular?

Because they were, at one point, an excellent airline, and in many regards still are. The last fatal crash they had was in 1951. Their planes didn't fail as often before they moved maintenance offshore.

our history now descends from a kingdom of gold to one of iron and rust

- Cassius Dio

Well, considering that you posted this while you were viewing this thread, and that I'm answering it while viewing this thread, and also we includes both you and I, the answer would be The 10,000 Post Thread. Hmm, that sounded like something Duke would say. :P

@ Duke, like Astro said Qantas has not had a fatal crash since 1951. They've never lost a jet aircraft (although the A380 incident was close) mainly because of the skills of the pilots.

The payrise isn't the only issue in the whole industrial action thing the other was protesting the outsourcing of jobs. Or as the Pilot's Union said "Australian Flight, Australian Pilots"

@ Hamish, Alan Joyce grounded the entire fleet "in response to increasing aggressiveness of the unions" however funnily enough, the unions haven't got any industrial action planned for the next 3 weeks.

When NOVA (English teaching company in Japan, at one point with over 50% market share and tens of thousands of foreign workers) went bankrupt, Qantas offered to fly the Australian teachers back to Australia and let them pay back the ticket later. I've never flown with them myself, though.

I thought it was Cicero who said that...

I'm not sure who it was. And annoyingly, googling it turns up a lot of results about a song/album by The Doves called "Kingdom of Rust" rather than actually relevant material.

However, while I can find a couple places attributing it to Cassius Dio I am not finding any source attributing it to Cicero, so...

The entire problem seems to be with management decisions rather than with the airline itself.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Yup, I'm a teacher. I go to a bunch of elementary schools and have a junior high "home school" that changes every semester. It's actually a lot of fun, probably in spite of the points Duke makes.

I don't care for little kids either. They are indeed annoying. I mean if you are related to them, you have to put up with cousins, nieces, and nephews, and perhaps babysit them but at least babysitting one is not as bad as being surrounded with a mob of them. My little cousin is precious but the only way I relate to her (other than by family) is that she likes the movies I loved as a child (Disney) and still enjoy.

I cannot stand babies. Sounds quite sick and heartless, but I hate them. I don't like small children either, for the same reasons. Come to think of it, I can't even stand kids my age. They're too obsessed with their phones and iPads and iWhatevers, and all they can think about is themselves.

I think as a generation we've lost the concept of loyalty except to ourselves. People just do whatever suits them at the moment, and friends are considered fungible.

We all became children, so why say hate children? Work with them and teach them something because your children, and even other children, will depend on you because you have experience.

I don't hate kids around 9 or 10. In fact, a lot of my good friends are 10 or 11. For kids this age, life is so simple, and they're not completely caught up in their phones and what-not. I have one friend who is my age, and I don't hate him, but besides that friend, I cannot stand kids (I really should say teenagers, to be precise) my age, and small children.

Since women are genetically predisposed to nurturing children and men are genetically predisposed to nepotistic teaching and role modeling, us boys have an excuse for not knowing how to deal with others' children.

I have to write an epilogue for the book "The Giver." I really didn't care for the book, but it was for a school assignment, so what can you do...

Kids are okay. I don't think we have any more serious loyalty issues than our parents had, or their parents, or their parents. Everyone talks about how much worse the new generation is than the one before that, but I am not entirely sure that's true. It struck me when I was in college living with my then-girlfriend (now wife) and I was talking to one of the older ladies who worked at the little grocery store with me. She was very kind and sweet and I had an image of her being rather proper, so I made a comment about how I hoped she didn't think less of me for living with my girlfriend. She was like, "Hahaha, you know? We have all done stuff like that!" It made me think that despite all the constant whining about our generation, I don't think we are any more spoiled, selfish, or stupid than those who came before us. Even if some of them do call themselves "The Greatest Generation." There have always been jerks and cheaters and losers, and there always will be.

Wow, that's a lot of words for the 10,000 post thread!

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?" - Plato, 424-348 BC

"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint" - Hesiod, sometime between 750BC and 650BC.

If society's declining, it must be doing so asymptotically.

I think it's more that A) every generation has a different set of faults, and B) as they grow older and mature many of those faults go away.

It's not continuous decline. Or even cyclical incline and decline. It's just that older people will always look at younger people and see them as less mature. The fallacy then is to assume that the less mature younger people will stay less mature as they grow older.

I find that an agreeable assessment. Although I occasionally find myself wondering just how much more mature I've really gotten since high school or college.

Well age is definitively a factor, After freshmen, i know i started looking at things differently. Doesn't mean i don't find some stuff funny still though.
