But can either have their power measured in Watts?

Joule be hard-pressed to figure out a way to do that.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

We're going to invent something already existing: the lightbulb.

With those, it could be a physics experiment.

Future? they have been out awhile :P

LEDs have been around since the 1970's but LED light bulbs have only existed for a couple years.

It's a lot easier to make LEDs that give off colored light than it is to make LEDs that give off white light. It's a lot easier to make dinky little LEDs for things like the power indicator on your TV than it is to make LEDs that are powerful enough to light up a space. And it's taken this long for the technology to become cheap enough to start to be commercially viable (as it is, one LED lamp is still in the $20-$40 range, ten times what a CFL costs).

My point is this: look around your house, or around anywhere, and tell me how many LED lightbulbs you see. Probably not too many. In the future, they will all be LEDs.

Though, for more powerful applications (street lights, stadium lighting, warehouse lighting, etc.) where you historically saw mercury vapor and nowadays see HPS or metal halide (or occasionally induction) lamps, the future is in EHID.

For the uninitiated,

LED = Light Emitting Diode

CFL = Compact Fluorescent Lamp

HPS = High Pressure Sodium

EHID = Electronic High Intensity Discharge

I have LED Christmas lights. I will wait until a high quality LED light bulb costs $20 or less. I heard that LEDs do not emit very much heat but perform less when exposed to higher temperatures so by necessity, the bulbs have to be colder than filament based incandescent bulbs.

By the way, I believe the Great Firewall of China uses more electricity than facebook servers.

Yup, LEDs, like all solid state electronics, perform better at colder temperatures.

In contrast to fluorescent lighting, which does not handle cold temperatures well.

LEDs are also has disadvantages because of its lower heat, especially in winter

It wouldn't really work out as an outdoor light when there's snow :P

Also Hamish, any idea why this thread got unpinned?

It's been un-pinned?

Well, it either un-pinned itself, or one of the admins came along and did it. But I haven't heard anything.

To be honest, this thread is no longer as active as it used to be, and it's hardly any more active than any other forum game, so it makes sense for it not to be pinned.

But I'll leave it open to you guys, would you rather have it pinned, or does it not bother you?

I'll be honest, I find it difficult to care whether it's pinned or not. It's usually in the top five or so unpinned posts anyways, so as it is is fine by me. Other people's opinions may matter more than mine, however.
