My brother bought Battlefield 3 this afternoon but I haven't had a chance to play it because I was busy with friends and school work. Last year of high school is a completely ruining my laziness.

I'll probably give it a try sometime this week, any good larks?

Looks like MW3 will best BF3 in story, not really feeling the BF3 story so far.

Eh, who cares about the story so long as you get to shoot things? Stories in video games aren't important. In fact, too much story and not enough action can ruin a game.

So Duke, if you removed all story from games, would they still be good games?

The Uncharted series has some of the best story gameplay.

The Gran Turismo series has no storyline at all, and they are awesome games. That said, I suck at basically all other games, so a bit of extra story does me good.

Sure. Look at a lot of old games and how they have very little and very loose a story within them. The first Megaman game, for instance, has no cutscenes or dialogue at all except for the ending. You had to read the manual if you wanted the backstory. The first Mario game, similarly, had no dialouge or cutscenes except for the ending and the famous "Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!". Developers didn't have the system resources to put extensive story in games back in the day and didn't waste their time on it. Nowadays the degree to which story gets involved in some games is getting ridiculous. Too much cutscene, too much downtime just watching and not doing anything. Story isn't a bad thing, but too much of it detracts from the experience.

I enjoy the cutscenes, sometimes more the n the gameplay itself.

And story can be a make or break for me.

Games, nowadays, are more expected to have a good story behind them. That wasn't so much the case 10 or 20 years ago. I don't play mario but then feel disappointed because the story sucks, I know it has no story, but I didn't expect any different.

This is all because of how games and technology have evolved. Mario, and most games of that period, were 2D platformers, and thats great, but once the technology for 3D games came around then games with no story started to lose their charm. The 3D environment is more visually engrossing and it draws you into their world more than a 2D game ever could. So as you play, you start to feel like you are the character, you are this person in this world in front of you. This immersion brings along your own feelings and experiences, so you expect this world to tell you something too. You've never walked down the street for no reason what so ever, you've never shot someone on the street for no reason, never stolen a car, never freed a hostage, never climbed a building, never done any of these things for no reason, there is a reason behind everything you do, so you start to assume that this world that you are in (the game) will have reasons behind these actions/gameplay.

2D games don't need story as much as 3D games do.

Little Big Planet, its a fantastic game, but it is essentially a 2D platformer. Whats the motive behind the game? (Especially in the 1st one?) Well, there is none really. I don't really know why I have to make it through these levels, but all I know is that when I make it to the end there is another lever after that in which I must do the same in. There is no story, or at least minimal, but while playing the game, it isn't missed.

Uncharted, another fantastic game, however this one is a 3D action/shooter/platformer. Why do I play the game? The story is fantastic! I feel like I am the characters, I feel I know their motivation, I can justify the things they do. I know why I need to fall into this pit, I know why these people up ahead are bad. It would not be much fun to run around an ancient tomb if nothing was happening, but if what ever was happening wasn't even related to anything, well then that would just be stupid. The story brings context, it also brings motivation, it brings a world which tells me something, tells me a story.

Essentially, If there was no story for 3D games it would be like going to watch a movie with no plot. Those are the worst movies.

I'm back on the Gold Coast for a couple of days. I was not expecting the 10C (18F) temperature difference between Canberra and here.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

A trend which I find quite displeasing. But maybe that's why I don't play too many newer games. And why I skip cutscenes a lot.

Well, there are movies out there with no plot or very loose plot. You know the sort. ;)

Interestingly, there is a good analogy here. That is not unlike how I view video games. Who cares about the story? It's all about the action!

Saw Prince Philip at Uni today (for like maybe 1 minute :P), looks rather fit and healthy for a 90-year-old.

I have no idea who Michael Bay is.

Don't worry, his directing career has taken quite a tumble in quality since he directed Bad Boys and The rock.
