I get my marks back sometime today. I'll be checking the university website frequently.

OK, finally got my grades back.

In order of worst to best:

Introductory Mathematical Statistics: Pass (56%)

Thermal and Statistical Physics: Credit (62%)

Quantum Mechanics: Distinction (70%)

Differential Equations and Applications: Distinction (75%)

Which is quite the reverse of how well I thought I had done.

Traditionally in the US anything below a 60 is failing outright and anything below 70 is a D, but college grades can work funny ways. Some professors grade on a curve and passing is anything above a certain percentile in the class' performance. Other times you will see a loosened structure where 60 will get you a C (which in most colleges is what you actually need to "pass" for anything other than an elective).

Regular structure:

0-59 = F

60-62 = D-

63-66 = D

67-69 = D+

70-72 = C-

73-76 = C

77-79 = C+

80-82 = B-

83-86 = B

87-89 = B+

90-93 = A-

94-100 = A

Loosened structure:

0-49 = F

50-59 = D

60-64 = C

66-69 = C+

70-74 = B-

75-79 = B

80-84 = B+

85-89 = A-

90-100 = A

Here, or at least at this university, the marks are as follows:

0%-49.9% - Fail.

50%-59.9% - Pass

60%-69.9% - Credit

70%-79.9% - Distinction

80%-100% - High Distinction.

These are not necessarily what marks I actually got initially, though. Marks can be scaled based on the difficulty of the tests and exams, and how well the cohort did compared to other years. These are my marks post-scaling.

I wonder if my marks are out then...

For some reason though we appear to have two fail grades

0 - 45 - N

45 - 50 - N+

Makes no sense to me but that's what we have :P

I think, although I am not sure, if you get a N+ you are permitted to take a supplementary exam to try and pass.

N probably means 'No Credit Awarded' or something like that but 'No mark' is close enough :P

As for the statement about supp exams being granted for N+, well not 100% sure (my N+ got graded up to P after the lecturer intervened) but I believe faculty policy is that supps are only granted if it's the last unit you need to complete to finish your degree..

In my school, the high school is marked with percentages but a few years back they changed everything in the elementary. Now they give the kids letters instead of percents:

M - Mastered (I don't even know why that is on there. Nobody has ever gotten it, even when the kids get all the questions right on a test.)

E - Excellent

S - Satisfactory

P - Progressing

I - Insufficient

It used to also be if you get 90+ you have honours with distinction and if you got 80+ you had honours. The kids who got those would get little trophies at the ened of the year and the kids who caame close to honours would get cerificates. Now they just give certificates to everybody and you either get high academic achievment or just academic achievment. Nobody likes the new way now, I'm not even sure why they changed it in the first place...

Here they consider 0-49% a failing grade. Even if a kid gets 0 in every class on his report card, they still advance them on to the next grade though.

At one of the schools I teach at here I was shocked to see kids happy about scoring a 12/45 or a 25/45. Those would totally be failing scores back Stateside, regardless of how much the teacher curved the grades, but apparently every test here gets curved, and curved mightily by the looks of it. There are also more than a few kids who scored zeroes by simply not doing any work whatsoever. Baffling to me... Of course, I was one of those kids who ruined the curve for everybody else by scoring regularly above 90% :D .

We only did normal letter grades starting in 3rd grade. In Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades, there was a different report card that rather than reporting grades in various subjects instead listed several skills and actions ("asks questions", "pays attention", etc.) which could be graded as Y (Yes), N (No), or MP (Making Progress). The elementary schools would also give grades for effort in addition to grades for performance. 1 = great effort, 2 = satisfactory effort, 3 = unsatisfactory effort. Middle and high schools didn't do this and just gave performance grades.

Speaking of ruining curves, we used to have this program called ELP (Extraordinary Learners' Program) in 2nd through 5th grade where bright kids would leave their normal class for a couple hours one day a week (in 5th grade, all day one day a week) to go and discuss subjects on a higher intelligence level. For 3rd through 5th grade admittance into the program was based on standardized test scores from the previous year, but since there was no state standardized testing in 1dt grade, instead they had another special exam they gave everyone involving questions along the lines "if you fold this like this and cut it like that, what does it end up looking like?". It was 30 multiple choice questions. Getting 15 out of 30 correct was considered exceptional and garnered you admission into ELP. Guess who got 30 out of 30 correct.

It's a shame, though... this ELP program no longer exists. It was axed nearly ten years ago in a round of budget cuts, partly for it being politically incorrect to treat any gifted kids as special, and partly because it did not help meet the requirements of the new federal No Child Left Behind Act. So now the smart kids don't get their skills developed to their full potential, and the not-so-smart kids get pushed to meet goals they cannot. Utter insanity.

Our marks are really bad here, for universities (the ones I have attended) they increase every 5%, however anything over 85% is an A+

At high-school there are four levels you can get; Not achieved, Achieved, Merit, Excellence. A fail is a Not achieved, anything above that is a pass. Whats worse is that you gain credits for each assignment, however there is no distinction between gaining the credits at Achieved level, Merit level or Excellence level and you get awarded the same amount of credits no matter how well you did. So, technically speaking, I could just get an achieved and pass the paper gaining 4 credits, but then some one else could do much better than me and get an excellence with full marks, however they would still gain 4 credits.

In Junior High, did you know that some of your marks are elevated? They use that so that you have confidence in high school, but I believe this is not working.

I don't like that idea either. In our school, our report card use to be several pages long because it would list what we got on every assignment and test. It was good because then we could correct any mistakes that were made and figure out what we could improve on. Then they stopped it for some reason.

My marks were higher in year 11 and 12 than they were in years 9 and 10. First semester year 12 was my best report card ever.

Being able to focus almost entirely on maths and science probably helped a lot there. Religious Education was reasonably easy. The only one I had any sort of difficulty with was English.

As far as I know, my marks have only ever been adjusted once. From a B to an A for behaviour in Chemistry.
