Even though it does not require full attention, iPods can distract your driving and may cause an accident.

Hmm I think you can probably add programming/checking a GPS to the list of things people do whilst driving that they shouldn't :P

So does looking at your mirror.

Not comparable. Checking your rear-vision mirror is diverting your attention away from one part of the road to another part of the road. Changing songs on an mp3 player diverts your attention away from the road completely.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Changing songs on my mp3 player involves setting it to shuffle before I leave and enjoying the tunes as I drive, occasionally hitting next if I deem it so necessary, no taking my eyes off the road at all.

I use buttons, therefore no need to move my eyes as i know them by memory. Touchscreens would be a bit dodgy.

I erfer to use a PSP, you just have to hit the "L" or "R" button till you hear a song you want to play, needs to looking, plus people drive with one hand anyway.

So does looking at your mirror.

Not comparable. Checking your rear-vision mirror is diverting your attention away from one part of the road to another part of the road. Changing songs on an mp3 player diverts your attention away from the road completely.

Not to mention that checking the mirror qualifies as "a quick glance". Messing with an mp3 player involves taking your eyes off the road for longer than that.

Changing songs on my mp3 player involves setting it to shuffle before I leave and enjoying the tunes as I drive, occasionally hitting next if I deem it so necessary, no taking my eyes off the road at all.

This requires being able to tolerate a purely random selection. Very often people say "ooh, I want to listen to this specific song", and will then go scroll through their menu to find it. And yes, I have seen this done while driving. Which involves staring at the iPod for several seconds with just a quick glance or two at the road mixed in.

I can't even tolerate a partially random selection. I want total control over what I listen to. But I do not own an mp3 player. With me in the car the extent of music control is changing CDs. And I have a rather developed method of handling this:

1) put some CDs that I want to listen to on that particular trip in the passenger seat. Decide on an order ahead of time and stack them in that order.

2) put first CD in player before driving away, leave box lying open in obvious spot on passenger seat

3) when CD is nearing end, feel around and grab next CD off top of pile, open box and place it in another obvious spot on passenger seat

4) when CD ends, eject it, place it in box, close box. Take next CD out of box and put it in CD player

5) rinse, repeat

If all goes smoothly, I can do all this without taking my eyes off the road at all. Of course, it doesn't always go completely smoothly. Sometimes I deviate from my planned order. Sometimes due to sudden braking my neat stack of CDs falls over. In such cases, I will have to feel around more for what I'm looking for and check what's what by putting it in front of me and glancing at it. Easy enough to do when not on the highway (since one can take advantage of red lights, etc.). When on the highway, I'll be more inclined to just pull over to do this if I need to. Or at least wait for a straightaway before I do any glancing.

I use buttons, therefore no need to move my eyes as i know them by memory. Touchscreens would be a bit dodgy.

But how do you know what song you're selecting without looking at the screen?

Yikes! It is very dangerous to drive one handed.

You listen to the first 5 seconds of each song, that's what I do. I can ID every single one of my songs by the first 5 seconds. :P

    4575.

Same here, except I think I have more songs then you. :P

Also, I just have my ipod set for shuffle when I'm driving, and if I don't want to listen to the song that pops up,I just click the next button. Doesn't require looking away from the road.

I suppose that's a solution... although I find it quite jarring and annoying when I have to listen to someone do this. Hearing 5 seconds of this song, 5 seconds of that one... really grates on the ears. I do not appreciate in any way starting a song if you do not intend to finish it.

In other news, I finally ditched my crappy old earbuds and sunk $50 into a nice pair of headphones today. And hot damn, the sound coming out of these things is awesome!

My solution was very cheap. I just bought the cheapest (and therefore containing the least storage space) Walkman I could find, thus limiting the songs stored on it to ones I would normally listen to anyways. It's worked out pretty well for me so far. Gotta get the 3rd and 4th Tokyo Jihen cds to make it complete, though.

Ummm, no. Sony Errickson has a walkman capability but it is not a walkman. Old walkmans are mp3 players, and some are even CD players.

Heh. I got news for ya kid: the Walkman brand predates CDs. The original Walkmans played cassette tapes!

My father bought a cassette Walkman for us to use on the beach on vacation in 1994 or so. CDs existed at that point, but CD player technology was not yet compact enough to make them portable.

It's interesting. Early on in high school, everyone had their portable CD players. Then this newfangled thing called an "iPod" came out and by senior year they outnumbered CD players.

I distinctly remember the first commercials they had when the iPod came out. Involved a guy dancing and singing "Baby Got Back", and a tagline that went something like "now you can take your favorite songs with you wherever you go". My initial reaction to the idea was, naturally, "well, that looks like a gizmo that's fancy but useless". Of course, ten years later, I still don't have one and have absolutely no desire for one.

It's nice to have one. I don't wanna install iTunes on my computer (and then deal with the constant updates for that and Quicktime in addition to everything else on this machine), so I avoided buying an iPod.
