After I saw you reply to my Money Bin request, I felt that I had to have a look at your thread.

I was blown away, to say the least. I'm not sure on what to say, but... wow. It's the guys like you who keep SimCity fresh even after a decade. The custom scenery you build looks as good as, or even better than, the one made by the paid professionals at Maxis. That library is stunning, as is the university tower. The restaurants look great, and I simply fell in love with the liquor store/dentist office. These new small buildings are also as atmospheric as can be, and make me long for a first-person view option even more than ever. Skyscrapers and epic towers might be cool and all, but you prove that even modestly sized buildings can be equally as epic, if not even more. The attention to detail and atmosphere is spot on. Great job, man. Good luck with the PhD, and best wishes for the future!

Gutterclub: Thanks very much, lets see if I got enough time during the holidays, I will be happy to see my BATs released trixies or not :)

Skycrapper241: You mean the little roof access?

Amthaak: Glad you like them! I tried to make the glass dirty let me know what you think

    Aaron: thanks as usual!

Cobraroll: Thanks very much for stopping by and kind words, as soon as I got some time I will give it a go at your request.

I made a few changes here and there added details, roof junk and nightlights, I guess my supervisors have been to slow in giving me their comments on my thesis hehehe

Q1: what is the distance to the sidewalk usually used for W2Ws? I recall reading somewhere that it is 0.95m, but don't really remember.

Q2: what is the way to go with these small buildings SD or HD?

Distance to lot edge for W2W: There are two systems, and I measure them simply in tiles on that standard Maxis sidewalk pavement texture. One system (used by BSP) is a setback of one pavement tile. Another system (used by JBSimio for his "smalltown USA" series, spa, and most creators of European stuff) is a setback of two pavement tiles.

HD or SD: SD all the way. HD is useful for objects that are so small that you couldn't make out what they actually represent otherwise. A stop sign is a good example: In SD, it will look pretty much like a lollipop - white post and some shapeless red-white blob on top. In HD you'll actually see it's a stop sign.

Buildings generally tend to be recognizable as buildings in zoom 5, so HD is really superfluous in this case.

I'd go with one paver tile, I'm sure someone has the exactly measurement of this somewhere? 0.3 metres?

Also SD, HD sacrafices Z5 for the sake of Z6, and nobody really uses Z6 or could even remember which buildings are in HD or not once playing..like T Wrecks says, good for props..but even then everything else around it is blury...not to mention file size of HD buildings.

Up to you of course pal.

The exact amount is one pavement tile on that maxis texture. since we know one SC4 tile is 16m and that there are 10 of those pavement tiles covering that 16m, we also know that the size of one pavement tile is 1.6m. You can actually see that gap in action in most of the pictures on BSP's uploads.

Looking really good! I'd go SD for all the reason Mr. Wrecks just mentioned. It really doesn't do much for full size buildings except multiply the file size by 2x or 3x.

Great so far but I think there are three thing which could be improved:

1: The greffiti looks stretchedf. I don't know how the original looks like or if you did it by yourself but I think you should improve it

2: The wood lathes on the roof are looking misplaced

3: The roof texture of the right building looks too firty and too rusty I think.

Everything alse looks good to me!

Why does everyone seem to dislike HD so much?

BATers and content makers always seem to have a strong opposition to making anything HD, but from my experience the average player actually appreciates it.

Yes, the filesizes it creates are a lager (but what's a few extra megabytes in an entire plugins collection, especially with today’s systems) and they may not match the surrounding buildings in resolution, but what's to stop entire HD neighbourhoods from sprouting up? As for the zoom 6 at the expense of zoom 5 issue, I honestly don't think the impact is that pronounced.

When I play I like to see fine detail and I do go to zoom 6 often. It's where you can get the best sense of realism and an ‘alive’ city. When I released what was probably the biggest HD building ever exported people only commented on how they loved the detailing. Nobody complained about the filesize or zoom 5.

So yeah, HD all the way! You've put so much effort into crafting those exquisite details, let us see them.

I agree with cockatoo, HD is the best way to go, SD just is plain, boring, and when you zoom up close, its just not there. I like HD because it shows off your handy work, and you my friend, have alot of stuff to show off! So, to heck with SD, HD!!! :D

I'd definitely download HD over SD any day! Those buildings look great! :D

Thanks very much for the feed back so I can see it is pretty divided, maybe I will try to export to versions HD and SD and let the user pick...I have exported 2 in HD and 1 in SD already here is how they look in game (I wonder why it looks so blurry):

    CentroBATS.jpg

I am going to make a few more of these but I think I can start by releasing these three together first.

I know I have asked this before, but I will do it again anyone willing to mod them and prepare them for release? I don't think they need much, but if someone could ad a bit extra I will be really thankful!

    cheers!

Don't worry mate, everything at is own pace, you also got your own BATs, so whenever you got some time will be fine!

So while I wait for corrections for my thesis (which feels like forever now) I had the time to do some more BATing, one more for my collection of small old downtown buildings.

I am still checking for the other other two buildings two complete the lot

I also started this (also real life blg) but it is a very early stage:

Awesome! Nice to see some Mexico's buildings again on the forum. Even if it's at an early stage, I think the blue texture looks too clean on the Esquina Dolores/ Victoria compared to the real life building. Just a personal opinion ;) Keep up the good work

This is just amazing, I really like how you are doing HD renders for your models. This is extremely useful for the player who wants showcase a lot of detail on their cities.

What an odd roof entrance on the little blue corner building!

I don't have much to comment right now since everything seems to be progressing well, so I'll just say that I like the building with the E-shaped footprint and the wavy front! How big is the lot you show in that preview pic? Is it 2x2? If so, would you consider releasing the "wavy E" building as a standalone version? I think it would work great on its own, not only in cities with a Latin American influence. :)

Heblem: Thanks, nice to see you around, I am still not sure what will follow I will make one or two more of these and then try something else. I have thought about LaCondesa, Roma or Coyoacan...will see (I am open to suggestions). I still want to make a few more UNAM buildings but I need to release the once I already have first. Saludos!

    Frex: Thanks!

Valsky: I am glad you like it!

Bastet: Thanks mate! You are right the real one is grimier I will play with the texture a bit...Maybe I'll make some Oz buildings too...I have been living down under for almost 4 years now, maybe if I get my residency hehehe!

    Silverazul: Gracias!

Evillions: I really like the small details, I'm still not very good but I am slowly improving!

TWrecks: You are right, I don't have more references than street view and google satellite images. The roof access looks strangely tall from what I can see. I added the ladder to make it look less prominent, but I'll my just drop it. About the building I am still deciding what to do with it. I n reality is next to one of this old colonial buildings, but I am also considering releasing it as stand alone or next to a similar medium size building.

Bit more of progress (not scaled yet).

Personally, I don't mind that you're talking in Spanish, but please bear in mind that the administrators of this website must know what's going on and what the users are saying. That's why you should write in English or at least add a translation, even if it's not perfect. It's enough if the content of the post is more or less understandable.
