Here, I tried to make a cloverstack according to Haljackey's diagram in the RHW interchange guide at SC4Devotion's forums.  I couldn't quite get it right, because the ramps meet in such a way that the cars are able to continuously drive in a circle through the interchange...which those crazy Sim drivers will certainly do.

Here's one that sort of looked like a partial Y was once a half-trumpet interchange.  I later realized that the ramps that would allow traffic to travel in all directions would be easy to add, so I did so.  Edit:  Sorry for taking the shot at night;  I could see it fine but I didn't realize that your monitor might show it darker.  Updated picture

@Moonraker0- Did you have to take the 2nd shot at night? I can't see it.

Nice work, everyone!

Here are two of mine: a really tight trumpet

and a partial Y

Hope you like them 4.gif

Just mucking abound with the SPUI intersection, and the fractional angle. If my PC hadn't crashed i'd probably change the onramps to be 2*RHW4 to RHW8, then have a merging space instead of the 2*RHW4 to RHW6

@blue lightning- I hate you(in a good way).

Well done, sneakypete. I've never used the SPUI piece. Now I can see it in all its glory!

@ROFLyoshi- So sorry I couldn't see your interchange. I was away in California, hundreds of miles away from home. My Clear didn't work while I was away...

Anyways, great job on those interchanges! Keep them coming! That is all.

But mine sucks compared to Blue Lightning.

Here's a Y (or is it a partial Y?) interchange, kinda combined with one and a half diamonds, just look at it and it'll make sense...

Here's just a cloverleaf, but a pretty high capacity one:

I think I have made what is just about the tightest basketweave possible, coupled with an interchange between parallel highways.  I later destroyed the basketweave, though, because it looked bad and wasn't necessary because the outer lanes weren't going to continue as a highway.100212737-4.jpg

All of these new interchanges look great ^^

But one thing that I do keep seeing people get horrendously wrong time and again is the lack of weaving space: the closer together an exit and the next entrance is, the slower the speed of the road has to be so that the cars exiting and joining aren't colliding with each other.

----------

http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=52.202557,-2.151947&spn=0.103523,0.363579&z=12

The above map shows one of the UK's most important roads - The M5. It's grade seperated from start to finish and runs at 70mph.

Use the scale at the bottom left of the map there to compare the distances. Remember, 2km is about the size of a medium city tile. These two junctions are about 5 km apart, and these are considered 'close together' for a motorway.

http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=52.355316,-2.056718&spn=0.013001,0.045447&t=h&z=15

This map shows to MUCH closer junctions. This is a little further north on the M5, where it meets the M42. These two are about a kilometer apart. If 5km is considered 'close', then this is intimate.

However, there is no conflicting traffic. Why? Because the eastern junction (Junction 1), only allows access to the east. There is nothing trying to cut across 4 lanes of 70 mph traffic.

Also; it shows very nicely the massive difference in size between a full sized T interchange and a roundabout interchange.

http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=55.865535,-4.254971&spn=0.011848,0.045447&t=h&z=15

This is the other end of the scale. This is the middle of Glasgow, and you can see the huge knot of roads that encircles it. Even then some of the slip roads have to intertwine and pass over one another so that they're no dumping their traffic into each other.

If you're a Glasgow native, you'll know that this road is horrendously prone to traffic build up - and is also subject to a 50mph speed limit.

----------

Obviously, all of those are IRL scales - and can be somewhat impractical given that the largest city size we can have is 4km squared. But; it's very important if you're aiming for the best possible realism to space out your interchanges.

Given the tight restrictions of the game environment that we're presented with, it would not be unreasonable at all to have an interchange every 2km to 1.5km (one, very occasionally 2, per medium city tile).

----------

Conclusion: Make sure you have plenty of weaving space! =D

You guy all make me sick! I wish I could lay out highways as half as good as all of them posted! Is there a basic ( very basic tutorial ) on learning to use the RHW?

Great pictures, everyone! Clearly, a lot of new possibilities have been added with the recent releases. I have yet to try them out myself, but it's great just to browse all these great screenshots!

I've upgraded one of my interchanges. There was just oo much traffic, so I upgraded the E-W highway to much higher capacity.

Nice interchanges, I need to get some pics up here, anyway, these "flex-fly" curving ramps, are they in the RHW release, or are they add-ons?

They come with the RHW 4.

This one was rather easy to make (normally, making interchanges is a hell for me, so I copy interchanges I find in this topic). I'm not entirely satisfied with its look though.

I won't use it (I've already bulldozed it actually), I just started to build on an empty city tile, searching for a compact interchange to replace a hideous cloverleaf in another city (but this one is too large).

I think you might have been able to make it a little more compact, but I like how it's really neat and organised. Mine are a total mess. Do you have a pic of the cloverleaf you're trying to replace?
